Civilian Police Recruitment Growing By The Thousands As Budgets Tighten

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

I was referring to civil commitment and how it's being used to keep sex offenders in prison after they've served their sentences.

http://www.ipt-forensics.com/journal/volume13/j13_1_3.htm

Here's an article by Glenn Greenwald on preventive detention:

http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2009/05/22/preventive_detention

Here are another couple of articles by Greenwald worth a read:

Obama is asserting that he has the right to deny Americans their day in court, to murder American citizens with no due process, no oversight whatsoever.

http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/06/25/assassinations/index.html

Pure Kafka-

http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/05/29/kafka/index.html

What makes Obama even worse than Bush-Cheney, IMHO, is that he campaigned on knowing different.

Bush and Cheney make no excuses for what they did and are about. But Obama ran on not being like them, and to see what he's done in office (and when cornered the excuses and l!es are d@mning as to his character).

To say what he's saying, there can only be one of two reasons:

1. Obama's got no conscience, or,

2. . Cheney's got Michelle's mother in an 'undisclosed location'.

You can choose to believe whichever one makes you feel better about your ability to assess character.

But I don't think you can't pick #2 unless you ignore everything else known about him to date.

Backdoor Draft Winding Down -- For Now

In 2004, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld commissioned a task force to study what causes Terrorism, and it concluded that "Muslims do not 'hate our freedom,' but rather, they hate our policies": specifically, "American direct intervention in the Muslim world" through our "one sided support in favor of Israel"; support for Islamic tyrannies in places like Egypt and Saudi Arabia; and, most of all, "the American occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan" (the full report is here - http://www.fas.org/irp/agency/dod/dsb/commun.pdf ).

Now, a new, comprehensive study from Robert Pape, a University of Chicago political science professor and former Air Force lecturer, substantiates what is (a) already bleedingly obvious and (b) known to the U.S. Government for many years: namely, that the prime cause of suicide bombings is not Hatred of Our Freedoms or Inherent Violence in Islamic Culture or a Desire for Worldwide Sharia Rule by Caliphate, but rather. . . . foreign military occupations.

Contrary to what Obama's 'most ardent supporters' excuse, the DoJ has no obligation to file a brief in favor of DOMA ( http://www.americablog.com/2009/06/choice-to-defend-doma-and-its.html ).

Not only doesn't the DoJ have any obligation to appeal, to challenge DOMA with legal arguments that, if pursued by the courts, could greatly damage gay and lesbian rights (that homosexuality is the equivalent of incest and pedophilia/child rape), it really shreds Obama's credibility about supporting the end of DOMA. Because if he really did support the end of DOMA, then he's supporting what he believes to be the equivalent of incest and pedophila/child rape.

Do you really want to be left defending that? I dare you.

How does a Democratic president, on the heels of the most criminal and corrupt administration in the nation's history, not replace Bush-era US attorneys? This is what Obama's US attorneys do instead of returning the democracy to the American people -- Instead we get Bush-style obscenity prosecutions:

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/s_691667.html

FYI - Presidents may fire US attorneys, and they do so routinely at the beginning of a new administration. It is unusual to fire US attorneys in mid-term (as Bush did) except in cases of gross misconduct (which wasn’t the case during the Bush administration).

As a liberal Democrat, I don't know how any self-respecting Democrat can defend Obama.

Do you think Obama and Democrats were put into power to get Republican legislation passed into law?

Obama and Democrats could have passed real healthcare reform legislation, gotten affordable, quality healthcare for everyone. They didn't. They got Bush's Medicare Reform Act of 2003-Part 2 through instead. A massive giveaway to corporations. What Obama did was sell a few million insurance policies paid for by the American taxpayer, with gargantuan bonuses & profits going into the pockets of CEOs instead of for actual healthcare.

Obama did not need Republicans to pass real healthcare reform. He had and has all of the tools available to pass real Democratic legislation.

Republicans didn't eliminate single payer -- Obama did. To get Republicans to vote for it. When they refused, did Obama put through reconciliation what voters put Obama and Democrats into office to get for them, i.e., affordable quality medical care for everyone?

No.

Obama put the bill that he had gutted and top-loaded with massive giveaways to the Insurance and PhRma industries through reconciliation.

It's this kind of BS out of Obama's mouth, that "he has regrets about allowing himself to be defined by some as 'the same old tax-and-spend Democrat,' and that he was stricken too late by the reality that 'there's no such thing as shovel-ready projects' and perhaps should have 'let the Republicans insist on the tax cuts' in the stimulus", that tells you he's a MODERATE REPUBLICAN.

Obama has more concerns about what Republican voters think of him than them that brung 'im.

The next two years, as I predicted, are going to be even more of Obama trying to push the Democratic Party to the right-of-right-of-center.

Obama, RahmEmanuel, the DLC, DavidAxelrod, DavidPlouffe, all have worked their @$$es off to prevent real progressives getting into office.

One example right off the bat is Blanche Lincoln.

The White House put its full weight & support behind Blanche Lincoln over the true progressive (& union-backed) candidate in the primary, Bill Halter.

This wasn't unlike when Obama made a deal with Arlen Specter and put the full weight and support of the Democratic machine behind Specter during the 2010 primary in Pennsylvania, trying to buy off (among other alternative candidates Democratic voters in PA might have wanted to vote to have representing them) Joe Sestak. Consider that -- Obama actively went about trying to prevent Democratic voters from choosing their preferred candidate for the US so that a DINO, Republican Arlen Specter, could retain the seat.

Blanche Lincoln is 40 points down behind the GOP candidate John Boozman.

Guess who could beat Boozman in Arkansas? BillHalter. Because, like just about all Americans, Arkansans would prefer an authentic, likable candidate, even if it's a progressive.

But more progressives in Congress means real populist legislation getting passed into law. Real reform bills, that re-regulate banks and big business. Real stimulus bills, with jobs creation, green clean energy development, and more.

But that's not who or what Obama and the DLC-controlled Democrats are about.

And apparently, on top of the mistresses that have already been reported, there were others who left the mine quietly upon finding out about a wife so as not to cause the wife more grief.

The question then may be about what a job in the mines affords you. A ready excuse for irregular hours spent away from home? A chance at overtime to support multiple families?

How The GOP Went From 48 To Zero In Support Of Donor Disclosure

It's both parties.

Nobody's going to handicap himself on principle if it means that in doing so he's guaranteed to lose the election.

Not Obama & not any Republican.

We're awash in corrupt politicians, no statesmen. There really isn't a patriot in the bunch.

I'm not saying that Obama shouldn't have reneged; he never should have made the pledge in the first place. Candidates volunteering to handicap themselves isn't the way to go about getting public financing -- Public financing of campaigns should be the only way that a candidate can pay for his campaign.

Neither political party supports reforming the system because there's just too much money to be made. Personally. They see public office as a lifelong career where they can make or maintain huge personal fortunes.

Some may have (or had) a belief that they could do some good for the People along the way to their amassing fortunes, but after a few months they realize that's a naive view, one that's not possible with how the system is set up.

Read the article again. It's written from the perspective of, "what the 2 parties could agree on -- Transparency".

Like Obama deciding on his own that the insurance industry as gatekeeper to medical treatment must be maintained, so any healthcare reform had to work around that, despite the fact that it's the insurance industry in the equation that's the problem.

Well yes...but there are regulations now...aren't there? Or are we back to start.

====================================

No, not really. For example, one of the new rules is that the CEO of a company must certify it has complied with all regulations. Can you see the fly in this ointment?

Another is that rigs have to certify they have working blowout preventers and standards for cementing wells. "Certify". "Standards". No prior proofs before operating, all "after the fact" of the catastrophe & damages. To languish for years in a court system.

If you want to better appreciate the technical problems of involved (blow-out preventers have a 50% failure rate), and why we really need to revisit the question of offshore drilling at all, see here: http://www.theoildrum.com/node/6421

There's still no determination or resolution about the Deepwater Horizon explosion -- The investigation into the BP blowout in the gulf, its causes, the failure of the response and clean-up, has been buried.

And, just like the Obama administration has issued waivers to insurance companies allowing non-compliance with regulations from the healthcare legislation, the same is expected now.

The bought-and-paid-for-by-Big-Oil politicians have already been pressuring Obama to speed up the permitting process, which is a guarantee of throwing caution to the wind on safety and environmental concerns, or 'business as usual'.

How The GOP Went From 48 To Zero In Support Of Donor Disclosure

A healthy, functioning democratic republic relies upon one person, one vote.

Disclosure isn't the problem. Oh, sure, there shouldn't be secrecy having to do with anything in this democracy, but so what if voters get to learn who is funding some 527 group? That would, too, get drowned out, diluted, in more ads and lost in spin cycles.

The problem is that the candidate with the most money wins the election because he's been able to obliterate his opponents' voice. So the corporation and/or the very rich literally can buy elections. The more time that Citizens United is left to stand, the more money corporations and the rich can pour into election campaigns, stack pro-corporate politicians in all branches of government and make it impossible to get us back to some semblance of a functioning democracy, of one person, one vote.

In very real terms, the unlimited money going into campaigns from corporations and the rich mean that one of their votes is worth about 100,000 ordinary citizens' votes. Come the 2012 election, each rich person's vote will rise to about 1,000,000 individual citizens' votes.

Public financing of campaigns is the only solution, and it had better come fast.

Obama was the #1 recipient of BP contributions in 2008.

There really is no difference between the parties, other than the DLC-controlled Democratic Party has adopted rhetoric and spin designed to make its constituents believe that it is populist. Each party works for and delivers to the transnational corporations. They work in a kind of tag team relay, with Democrats consolidating the gains when it's their turn at bat that Republicans accomplished for the corporate masters when it was their turn at bat.

If you must continue to delude yourself into thinking Obama's a good guy who never would have started those wars, & who has only the best of intentions (I don't share that opinion anymore), but got a bad deal, then think of all this as a business plan where the Corporate Masters of the Universe have charted out their plans years in advance (governments do them, too) & select the politician/personality best able to achieve those plans in 4 year increments. If you want to l!e the country into war for oil & war-profiteering, then George W. Bush is your man to front it (with Dick Cheney, the former Secretary of Defense who initiated the privatizing of the military a decade earlier, actually running the operation from the shadows).

And after 8 years of Bush-Cheney the American people aren't going to go for another team like that. They're going to want HOPE & CHANGE, with a persona they can believe in & trust. BarackObama.

The truth is that Obama is no better than Bush-Cheney. Not better, not worse, but the same. His 'most ardent admirers' just like the packaging better. I'm not talking skin color, although that may be a factor for some of them; I'm talking about how a 'D' after the name is a brand they trust believe and trust in, despite the fact that it's the same 'soap' (product).

Over the course of US history, corporations have managed to game our political system, & done it so effectively that the two-party system competes to serve corporate interests while defending that service as, "What's good for GM (corporations) is good for America (We the People)".

Democrats (controlled by the DLC, and that's important to remember) & Republicans are corporate t00Is. Like siblings competing for the attention & approval (campaign contributions) of a parent, Republicans & DLC-controlled Democrats try to outdo each other in delivering for their real constituent, BigCorporations. The trick for them has been to make it seem as if they were really working on behalf of WeThePeople.

Democratic voters have mistakenly believed that Obama & Democrats were for strong regulations on banks, WallStreet, investigations, prosecutions, restitution of what has been robbed from the middle class and poor for the past 30+ years, environmental clean-up, clean, sustainable renewable energy (& that isn't nuclear), putting an end to the wars and occupation of Iraq & Afghanistan, affordable, quality universal healthcare (which ObamaCare is not), and more. The DLC-controlled DemocraticParty gives lip service to these & all populist issues, because like the RepublicanParty, the DLC works for the benefit of transnational corporations.

Why is Elisabeth Hasselbeck, known for her hardline conservative views, being legitimized & rewarded, particularly in these hard economic times with a second TV show at the network?

When Bush & Cheney got into the White House in 2001, conservatives were hired in greater numbers than liberals not only throughout government, but in media, too.

With a Democratic administration and a Democratically controlled Congress, I had been looking forward to a greater liberal presence in the media. Not just personnel, but liberal perspectives being presented, so that Americans could actually learn the ideas and points of view that have been banished since Reagan had made 'liberal' a dirty word in the 1980s.
