Obama's Blame Game: It's Not About Turning Out Voters, It's About Protecting Himself

Saturday, October 2, 2010

This was just too delicious to let pass.

You say, "then get Democrats to super majorities in both houses", and that that's what FDR got?

We already did this, got a 'super majority', just as FDR did in his first term (and 2nd, and 3rd term, before the pendulum began to swing back to the right).  But FDR began delivering from the git-go, unlike Obama & Democrats.

During the early Bush-Cheney years, Democrats said if the People wanted change, they had to put Democrats in the majority in Congress. So in 2006, we did.

Nothing changed.

Democrats said, "You have to give us more Democrats -- 60 in the Senate". In 2008, we gave them the 60. And the WhiteHouse.

And here we sit, punk'ed.

FDR came into office in 1932, with Democrats taking control of Congress.  Each election cycle where FDR stuck to his liberal guns, more Democrats were elected giving Democrats the majority in Congress.

FDR rammed through liberal legislation in his first two years (first 100 days), & in 1934 Democrats increased their hold on Congress. That continued every 2 years until the 1937 recession hit (the result of conservatives' success in cutting spending), when Republicans stopped losing seats & gaining them.

Obama came into office with the wind at his back. More people voted for him, a black man in America, than ever in the history of the US. They did it because of his ability to persuade that he was going to change the system, end the corporatocracy, lobbyism in government -- He was going to be the People's president, not a corporate t00I.

But unlike FDR, no sooner had Obama gotten elected than he slammed the brakes on the momentum of his election & a filibuster-proof Senate (tentative yet, with 2 senators, Kennedy & Byrd, at d.e.a.t.h's door, Obama did a 180-degree turn on his promises & sloooooowed everything down. To "work in a bipartisan manner with Republicans", after Republicans had already announced they were going to block everything Democrats wanted to do, & vote no on everything, in lockstep.

Since Obama has gotten into office, he's continued most of Bush's policies & his 'accomplishments' are being spun as "reform" when, in fact, they're Republican in nature.

There could be 100 "progressives" in the Senate & 435 in the House, & they & Obama would still find a way to deliver to corporations instead of the People, & then try to blame it on Republicans.

It's way past time to get the DLC-Democrats out of office, out of the DemocraticParty, & put real Democrats in.  That's what we thought we were doing when we put Obama in over HillaryClinton.  But in came Obama who put the Clinton team into the WhiteHouse, & not one liberal in his administration.  He actually kept liberals neutralized for close to a year, with vague promises & nomination paralysis (waiting to be confirmed, where they weren't free to speak out about his Republican-ways.  No recess appointments, just half-hearted excuses.

CIA Escalates Pakistan Campaign, Diverting Drones From Afghanistan

Ray McGovern, co-founder of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS), and who served as an Army infantry/intelligence officer in the early Sixties and for the next 27 years as an analyst at CIA, where he chaired NIEs and prepared and briefed the President’s Daily Brief, has an op-ed up at Consortium News with some interesting observations after reading Bob Woodward's latest book,  Obama's Wars.

Like the fact that no NIE (National Intelligence Estimate) was prepared before Obama escalated the war in Afghanistan, and he explains the significance.

CIA Escalates Pakistan Campaign, Diverting Drones From Afghanistan

AnnJones, a journalist embedded in Afghanistan,  spoke with Juan Gonzalez &Amy Goodman on Democracy Now!

DemocracyNow!: I’d like to ask you about one woman that became the front page of Time magazine in August, Bibi Aisha, the young Afghan woman who was pictured, her face mutilated, with the headline "What Happens if We Leave Afghanistan." You’ve been particularly critical of that story and how the media have manipulated it.

ANN JONES: I was very concerned about the exploitation of that personal family tragedy in order to make a case for keeping American troops in Afghanistan & continuing this war, in which so many Afghans have suffered. Bibi Aisha’s case was not uncommon. Her particular mutilation has been her nose & ears being cut off. There are four cases of it reported this year by the AfghanIndependentHumanRightsCommission. This, after Americans have been protecting Afghan women for eight or nine years in Afghanistan. This happens to be the way some Pashtun families treat women in order to keep them in servitude to the family. We're not going to change or stop that by the presence of troops.

DemocracyNow!: Can you tell us her story, though, and how you feel it was misrepresented, in being on the cover, Time's case for why the US is there?

ANN JONES: Bibi Aisha ran away from her parents-in-law's house. Her husband was absent elsewhere in doing some kind of work or looking for work. She was treated as a servant & physically abused all the time. She ran away. Her father-in-law caught up with her & did this mutilation. The Time story amplifies that, saying it was done under orders by Taliban commanders & so on. That's not the story I heard from Bibi Aisha when I talked with her before this Time story had ever come out, several weeks before.  Other journalists have spoken to her, as well, and have reported the mutilation, but not this supposed instruction of the Taliban to do this. The story changed in some way. How that happened, I don’t know. The news media that took that personal tragedy & used it for this political manipulation.

The
US protected Afghan women for the last 8-9 years, but when pro-war advocates inside the US government wanted to escalate the war & remain in Afghanistan, mutilations of Afghan women began anew.  The mention of these mutilations being ordered by the Taliban only occurs in Time magazine much later in a cover story selling the escalation of the war and "What will happen to the women if the US leaves Afghanistan".

After the Taliban was inserted into the narrative of the story, Bibi Aisha was flown to the US for plastic reconstructive surgery -
