George Soros Tells Progressive Donors Obama Might Not Be The Best Investment

Thursday, November 18, 2010

Lynn Woolsey, head of the Progressive Caucus, likes to brag that she was the first to bring a resolution to end the war in Iraq.  She, and congressional Democrats, and Obama, ran on ending the practice of paying for the wars through supplemental emergency spending bills, and putting the wars on budget (see why that is significant here - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/Marcospinelli/obamas-interview-with-progressive-bloggers_n_775112_65294994.html).

Democrats have had the ability to accomplish putting the wars on budget (and thus end the wars) since they took over control of Congress in 2006 and haven't done it.  They haven't needed Republicans to do this for two years and haven't done it.

As the head of the Progressive Caucus, Lynn Woolsey led 79 of the 82 members of the caucus to pledge that they would not vote for any healthcare reform legislation that didn't include a public option.

Woolsey then led the 79 to renege on the pledge.

Unbeknownst to Lynn Woolsey's constitutents (it was never reported in her district's newspapers): Progressive Congresswoman Woolsey Endorses Pro-War Blue Dog Jane Harman Over Progressive Marcy Winograd - http://www.laprogressive.com/election-reform-campaigns/progressive-congresswoman-woolsey-endorse-prowar-blue-dog-jane-harman/

Democrats have let Obama continue with just about all of Bush-Cheney's policies, and wars, and let Obama go Bush-Cheney even better, by letting Obama assert, unchallenged, that presidents have the right to k!ll Americans with no due process or oversight, push for 'preventive detention' and no transparency of anything a president asserts should be his secret.

Democrats have abdicated their Constitutionally-required role of oversight of the executive branch; they failed to perform it during the Bush-Cheney administration, and still don't with one of their own in the White House.

George Soros Tells Progressive Donors Obama Might Not Be The Best Investment

AxelDC   40 minutes ago (3:48 PM)

"Pelosi was highly effective as Speaker.  The House pushed through 170 bills that Reid never bothered to take up."
======================================================

What's the big accomplishment of getting 420 pieces of legislation passed in one chamber of Congress but not the other?  It only becomes law when both chambers pass it.

Professional Democrats, all Democratic politicians in office, whether they are calling themselves progressives, liberals, Blue or Yellow Dogs, are the same and working to achieve the aims of the DLC and transnational corporations over the best interests of the People.  If they are a professional political and member of the Democratic Party, and in Washington, they have bought into and are supporting the culture of transnational corporations as their real constituents.

Their only problem with this is that corporations don't vote, and politicians need votes to get into office.  So they, Democratic politicians, try to convince the People they're working on our behalf with weasel-words, rhetoric designed to lead voters into thinking one thing when the opposite is true.  Obama can say, "I got health insurance for the People", but having health insurance isn't what Americans wanted and isn't what Democratic voters put Obama and Democrats into power to get for them.  Having health insurance isn't the same thing as everyone being able to get affordable, quality medical treatment.

Democrats in both chambers of Congress work as a team. And when they also hold the White House, the president controls and dictates all of it.  They identify what they hope to achieve (pro-corporate legislation) and then strategize how to get it while saving each other's hides with constituents come election time.

Those in liberal districts get to talk a good game about being champions of the People, but when push comes to shove, if their votes are needed to cross over and k!ll liberal legislation (like a public option or access to ab0rtion), the DNC will make sure they are covered come election time, with massive infusions of money into their campaign war chests and crushing any principled challenges to them from the left in their primaries.

Here's an example of how they tag team us:

Spam : Electronic junk mail or junk newsgroup postings. Some people define spam even more generally as any unsolicited email. However, if a long-lost brother finds your email address and sends you a message, this could hardly be called spam, even though it's unsolicited. Nor are invited comments on a public website in which you are a guest. Real spam is generally e-mail advertising for some product sent to a mailing list or newsgroup. Comments that you don't agree with, or by people you don't particularly like, aren't 'spam'.

Palin Book Slams Levi Johnston

Sarah Palin has a few words for Fox's "American Idol." She refers to "talent-deprived" contestants who suffer from "the cult of self-esteem."

"No one they have encountered in their lives – from their parents to their teachers to their president – wanted them to feel bad by hearing the truth," she writes. "So they grew up convinced that they could become big pop stars like Michael Jackson."

Isn't this her base?  The children of her base?

The fan base of American Idol and Dancing With the Stars is Republican.

Yes.

But I disagree that Obama decided to "split the difference" -- Obama was co-conspirator in BP's efforts to bury the oil and cover up the devastation being done in the Gulf of Mexico and to the entire Gulf region of the US.

Alan Grayson: Five Things The Rich Can Do With Their Tax Cuts (VIDEO)

If Bush's tax cuts are allowed to expire as they are set to on December 31st, the deficit would be cut in half, instantly.

If the tax cuts are continued for the rich, we would have to borrow $700 billion to pay for it.

If the tax cuts are continued for everyone, we would have to borrow $3 trillion to pay for it.

And if there is a 2-year extension "compromise", we would still have to borrow $70-140 billion for the rich's portion and $383 billion for the middle class's portion.

Obama is expanding the wars into Yemen.

Where's the money coming from?

Obama and Democratic leadership have already indicated they're on board with Social Security cuts, privatizing, etc.

There should be tax HIKES on corporations and the rich.  There should be massive cuts to the military.  Banks should be threatened with nationalization unless they begin lending to small businesses.

Democratic politicians should be beating this drum, loudly and constantly.

How cowardly of Democratic politicians to leave it to an outgoing congressman in this lame duck session to put on this show.

Has anybody seen the Democratic leadership lately?  Where is Obama?  Where is Harry Reid?  Where is Nancy Pelosi?  Where is Steny Hoyer?  Where is Jim Clyburn?  WHERE ARE THE PEOPLE'S LEADERS???

Come to think of it, where's Elizabeth Warren?  Weren't her supporters, the ones who assured everyone it was just fine for her to take an advisory role to Obama instead of one with teeth, with power, saying we'd be hearing from her all the time, calling Obama and Geithner out?

Funny Or Die Spoofs Chevron Again In 'Anatomy Of A Greenwash' (VIDEO)

Individual spill rates of 'seeps' are much lower than the G U S H I N G  from the Deepwater Horizon blowout.  As well, these much smaller 'seeps' are dispersed around the Gulf, so that the amount of oil released from each 'seep' degrades quickly.

With BP's Deepwater Horizon blowout, the oil all  G U S H E D  out at the same time, in the same place.  "Natural" 'seeps' occur spaced out, a bit at a time, over a wide geography -- The oceans can degrade small amounts of oil 'seeps' within 5 days, continually.  Water in one location can only degrade so much oil at a time; the Deepwater Horizon blowout  overwhelmed the ocean's natural oil-coping mechanisms.

Strong oil seeps can lead to increased microbial productivity (as those bacteria break down more abundant oil) and result in some local hypoxia (lack of oxygen) on the ocean floor, but not to the point of causing large dead zones.  Further, individual seeps are not always active and the release rate can even vary considerably during a single day and from day to day.  As a result, only a small area around a seep is ever actually exposed to "fresh," un-degraded oil, and that is when it is most toxic.

What we know as "oil" is actually a varying combination of thousands of different compounds.  Many of these react differently and have different fates when released into the water: some molecules evaporate, others degrade in sunlight ("photolysis"), some dissolve in seawater, some get eaten by microbes, and others sink and end up in sediments.  That is, if they don't wash up on a beach or become entrained in the biosphere first.

The Gulf of Mexico is an ELE (Extinction Level Event).

We were already driving the Sixth Great Extinction before the BP blowout in the Gulf -- We are a very careless species.

Funny Or Die Spoofs Chevron Again In 'Anatomy Of A Greenwash' (VIDEO)

"Actually, tar naturally seeps up on many California beaches."
===================================

Let me first dispense with this idea that what is "natural" equates to 'good' or 'healthy' or even commonly occurring.

Botulism is natural, anthrax is natural, automobile accidents are natural, rabies in bats is natural, dogs eating their own feces is natural, but none are good or healthy or phenomena that we'd like to see or create more of.

Now, to the "seepage" versus  G U S H I N G  (what happened in the Deepwater Horizon blowout):

Small quantities of oil do "seep" when enough cracks and fissures form above a reservoir.  Oceans have an ability, limited, to deal with oil that 'seeps' out slowly and is widely dispersed.  Oceans do not have the capability of accommodating massive amounts of oil  G U S H I N G in one place; marine ecosystems can't cope with that kind of assault.

Oil from natural "seeps" normally stays in the water for between 10 hours and 5 days.  The area around seeps don't have any great effect on the surrounding biological communities.  The animals living around seeps haven't needed to evolve in order to survive in the environment.

In that time that natural "seeps" normally stay in the water, those molecules that easily can be broken down are broken down, leaving behind the remaining, heavier oil.  This heavier oil consists mostly of larger compounds that are more difficult to dissolve, evaporate or be digested by microbes.  These molecules sink to the floor.

An analysis of sediment samples from different areas around a natural seep revealed a consistent rate of hydrocarbon loss in the oil that eventually sank.  This indicates that there is an upper limit to how much oil can be broken down by natural forces in the ocean.

Hence, the difference between 'seeps' and  G U S H I N G  (or more the more politically quaint and deceitful: 'Spills').

Gulf Oil Spill Investigation: Forensic Testing Begins On Deepwater Horizon Blowout Preventer

A reminder of what Obama said after the DeepwaterHorizon blowout in an exchange with reporters following a tour of TheodoreIndustrialPort in Theodore, Alabama on June 14, 2010:

"It turns out that if the oil hits the beaches, that's actually probably the easiest to clean up. So it's a concern obviously for tourism, it's a concern for an entire Gulf region that economically depends on the tourist season and this period of time when people are out of school. But those beaches will recover because those big globs of oil, when they hit the beaches, we can send a bunch of people out there and scoop them up, dispose of it properly, and those beaches will look pretty pristine a year or two years from now."

Obama really said that.

Really.

In 1969, a blowout on a UnionOil platform six miles off of SantaBarbara "spilled" an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 barrels of crude oil onto the beaches, fouling the coastline from Goleta to the Rincon & all four of the northern Channel Islands.

Forty years later, hotels around SantaBarbara include Tar-Off Towelettes ("Pleasantly Scented Tar Remover: Removes Tar, Grease & Oil") in their baskets of complementary bath products ("Once the gooey stuff gets on your shoes or feet, it’s almost impossible to get off. We recommend that you don't go barefoot, & you may want to take an old pair of shoes or buy some inexpensive ones that you won’t mind throwing away").

Tar is a known carcinogen & should be removed from your skin ASAP; easier said than done. Some swear by Vaseline, Baby Oil, mineral/vegetable oil, kerosene, GOO Gone! to get the tar off. I've never had much luck getting it off with anything but nail polish remover (acetone), which while helping to get the clumps of tar off, still leaves a tar stain or residue on your skin that just has to wear off over time (1-2 weeks).

Nail polish/acetone/kerosene doesn't work to remove the tar from shoes. Throw them out (& do it before you get home & walk inside your home -- You'll never get tar out of carpeting or wood floors without destroying the finish).

This here is what sticks to your feet/shoes after you walk on a SantaBarbara beach today, 2010 -- You won't see it; it's just below the surface of the sand.

So the question is: Is Obama, with the best and the brightest advisors surrounding him, just horribly misinformed?  Or is he a corrupt Iiar?

Funny Or Die Spoofs Chevron Again In 'Anatomy Of A Greenwash' (VIDEO)

Really.
