I don't think all of the mistresses were clueless, but I would hazard a guess that most, if not all, of the wives were. About other women, and about their husbands having fathered children with them.



And apparently, on top of the mistresses that have already been reported, there were others who left the mine quietly upon finding out about a wife so as not to cause the wife more grief.



The question then may be about what a job in the mines affords you. A ready excuse for irregular hours spent away from home? A chance at overtime to support multiple families?
