Obama's fairly stunning disparagement of the Warren and Burger Courts (expressed on the eve of naming Justice Stevens' replacement), as he echoed the classic, decades-old, right-wing claim that those courts were guilty of the "error" of "judicial activism."

New target of rights erosions: U.S. citizens
A primary reason Bush and Cheney succeeded in their radical erosion of core liberties is because they focused their assault on non-citizens with foreign-sounding names, casting the appearance that none of what they were doing would ever affect the average American. There were several exceptions to that tactic -- the due-process-free imprisonment of Americans Yaser Hamdi and Jose Padilla, the abuse of the "material witness" statute to detain American Muslims, the eavesdropping on Americans' communications without warrants -- but the vast bulk of the abuses were aimed at non-citizens. That is now clearly changing.
The Obama administration begins covertly abandoning long-standing Miranda protections for American suspects by vastly expanding what had long been a very narrow "public safety" exception, and now Eric Holder explicitly advocates legislation to codify that erosion.

Obama wins the right to detain people with no habeas review
Few issues highlight Barack Obama's extreme hypocrisy the way that Bagram does. As everyone knows, one of George Bush’s most extreme policies was abducting people from all over the world -- far away from any battlefield -- and then detaining them at Guantanamo with no legal rights of any kind, not even the most minimal right to a habeas review in a federal court.

Obama Outdoes Bush In The War On Whistleblowers -
The Obama administration's war on whistleblowers -- whose disclosures are one of the very few remaining avenues for learning what our government actually does -- continues to intensify. Last month, the DOJ announced it had obtained an indictment against NSA whistleblower Thomas Drake, who exposed serious waste, abuse and possible illegality. Then, the DOJ re-issued a Bush era subpoena to Jim Risen of The New York Times.

A president does not leave duty to go on vacation when the very existence of an entire region of his country (not to mention the effect on other nations) is in an ongoing crisis. To say it's about appearances, public relations, doesn't drive home how dire this situation is, but much of what a president does happens through people's perceptions.
Being disengaged didn't work for Bush ("cell phone", "video conferencing") and it certainly doesn't work for Obama. For 35 days he's been saying, "Not my responsibility -- It's BP's".
As Donna Brazille, Democratic Party insider and fierce supporter of Obama said to Howard Fineman about the AWOL Obama to her state's crisis with this blow-out, "What happened to the fierce urgency of now?"

I think this means that if the top kill doesn't work, immediately thereafter BP/government will be detonating explosive devices to try to stop the gushing.
That's the only thing that makes sense about the whole set of circumstances that's been announced: BP shutting down the live feed (not by itself indicative of anything except BP and the government not wanting a failure to be watched live, like Neil Armstrong on the moon), Obama showing up in Louisiana on Friday and then leaving to go on vacation and not showing up at Arlington to commemorate veterans on Memorial Day.
The man is nothing except a politician, and I can't imagine his leaving on vacation with this leak still spewing.

Considered historically, it will become clear that the job of Republican governments is to invent novel, ad hoc expansions of state power, while the job of Democratic governments is to consolidate and systematize them. Far from repudiating supposed Bush-era "excesses," the Obama regime has sought--usually successfully--to entrench and to codify them. This is just the latest example.

No, it's not the WWII era, but people have a way of turning on a dime in the face of emergencies.

It is interesting, though, that you prefer to think that Obama has a tin ear to the politics of this situation, and would go on vacation in the midst of the biggest environmental disaster to hit this nation and further to snub veterans on Memorial Day.

I've got a hunch that that's really what's happening tomorrow, if after the top kill operation fails.

Circle of life, booboo; it's not a lake, meaning, a body of water that doesn't feed into other bodies of water.

Between BP pulling the live feed and Obama showing up in the Gulf on Friday, then leaving for vacation (and not showing up at Arlington for Memorial Day events), I think this means that if the top kill doesn't work, immediately thereafter they'll be detonating explosive devices to try to stop the gushing.
Because I can't see Obama going to Louisiana and then on vacation if that wasn't the case.

Obama doesn't walk the talk.
The Obama-Kerr
The line Obama uses is that he's committed more money to green renewable energy than any other previous administration. That's no big deal, consideration that past committments have been 0. Obama's committed $80 billion, and that's nothing. It's not going to lay a grid, an infrastructure. It's nothing for future administrations to build on.

WE, the People, are the government in a democracy.
The problem is that the government has been taken over by corporations.
Representatives of corporations (that's what politicians in office are now) have gotten into power in the government.
The People need to get active, take over the political parties (throw the DLC out of the Democratic Party) and run REAL citizens for office.

Obama is part of the Washington culture of corruption.
He's been in office for 16 months, and has continued just about all of Bush's policies, and gone Bush and Cheney a few steps more in executive branch overreach, elimination of civil liberties like habeas corpus.
Obama has blocked all investigations and prosecutions into the Bush-Cheney administration.
It's not like he walked into the job not knowing that Bush and Cheney had planted Liberty University graduates in executive branch agencies. We all knew about it.
Obama and Democrats were put into power because they promised to clean up the mess. This particular mess falls right at Obama's feet.
The proof is that Obama has NOT shut down BP's other operations, like Atlantis, which is in worse shape than Deepwater Horizon. He's continued issuing permits to drill offshore.

For all intents and purposes, this is a crime scene, and Obama is allowing the prime suspect to process the evidence.
The fact that BP has blown off the EPA's orders to not use Corexit (and that Obama is letting BP blow off the EPA, and continue using this toxic dispersant) is another great clue that both BP and the government don't want the real amount to become known.
There are other red flags about this situation indicating Obama's and BP's priority has been to cover up the full extent of this disaster:
Not shutting down BP's other drilling operations, like Atlantis;
Continuing to issue drilling permits while publicly stating that there's a moratorium, etc.
Not releasing the video and live link (the White House has had that live link since the first day, has let BP l!e about the quantity and kept scientists and researchers from the area and in the dark about the amount.

The only reason for using a dispersant is to hide the oil, send it beneath the surface so that it can't be seen by the media & the People.
Once the oil's in the water, the only way to keep it from the wetlands, the coast period, is to surround it with booms & burn it off. While not environmentally friendly, burning's certainly more ecologically healthy than using Corexit.
BP (& the government - It is ultimately the government's responsibility to protect the homeland and the People) did not have the required back-up plan in place, with enough booms to deal with this blow-out.
In the absence of that, BP has been actively trying to get rid of the evidence, the oil, "Out of sight, out of mind".
"It's not at all clear to me why we're dispersing the oil at all," said Carl Safina, president and co-founder of the Blue Ocean Institute. "It seems to me you would want it as thick and as concentrated so we can deal with it right there. We seem to be saying we're going to take this concentrated oil, and we're going to dissolve it. It's an out-of-sight, out-of-mind strategy. It's a PR stunt to dissolve this oil with dispersants. It's just to get it out of the way of the cameras on the shoreline.

I never said or implied that it was simple. I said clearly that it may not be possible to fix.
What the US military can conduct isn't up for discussion. What I said was that deepsea submersibles are typically found in navies (and also private foundation
This was from Dylan Ratigan's show yesterday -
"It may not be possible to fix this. What that means is that if it isn't fixed, that well will continue to gush until there's no more oil in it or the pressure gradients have matched up. It will take 9000 days (30 years) for this well to run dry, and waiting until August for the relief well to be drilled is too late to save the Gulf, the east coast of US and the N. Atlantic Ocean."

There's another false assertion that you, along with career conservatives, make about soldiers having been hamstrung in Vietnam.
Let's say that was true (it isn't, but let's for the sake of argument say it is): Your beef then is with your cherished leaders, beginning with Nixon and Kissinger. The fact is, they damned near razed Southeast Asia to the ground, and had absolutely no difficulty Iying to the American people whenever they believed that what they were doing wouldn't get support. And that was just as true for when LBJ was running the show (I told you nobody is harder on Democrats than me).
The only notch left to be kicked up would have been nuclear weapons, which is what chickenhawk conservatives were lobbying for.

You live in a fantasy world, my friend. Your ramblings show you know nothing about me, or modern warfare. WW2 and Vietnam shared very little, particularly how we fought the battles. The handicaps placed on the warfighters led to a pathetic effort, and a pathetic result, and dope-smokers like you spat on even the most honorable returnees, your fellow citizens. I'm sure you'd continue to do that, given the chance. Don't give me a lecture about honest evaluations, because you don't seem capable of it.

I declared that I'm an old liberal Democrat, I challenged your false assertions about Kerry with facts and links to back it up, and you projected your biased stereotypical beliefs about liberal anti-war activists (dope-smoking, spitting, no military service, ignorant of history and warfare) onto me.
You're all over the place and don't know what you're talking about with those accusations. You have a problem that is keeping you stuck fighting ghosts, defining your life by a war that is long over.
You never answered my original question: Had the war continued, had we 'won', how would Vietnam be different or better today?
