Ted Strickland: Dems' Concessions On Debt Debate Are 'Very Troubling'

Thursday, July 14, 2011

Obama was completely against mandates.  He criticized Hillary's support of them -- Here is Candidate Obama on mandates.

Before the healthcare debate even began, Obama made sure that there would be no public option, no single payer universal healthcare, no means for Americans to choose a public healthcare system, no means for containing  costs through public healthcare programs.  He took single payer off the table and blocked all efforts to get a public option in the final legislation due to the secret deal he made (and then lied about, and then had to own up to when the memo was leaked).

A caller on CSpan just a few months ago asked Richard Wolffe, who was out plugging his latest book written from his special access to the Obama White House, if we're ever going to get a public option to keep costs down.

Wolffe makes it clear that Obama and the DLC-controlled Democrats never had any intention of going with a public option or expanding public healthcare in any way (although Wolffe is mistaken when he says that Obama never ran on supporting a public option).

If only Obama had kept his campaign promises.

Obama campaigned on reregulating businesses and banks. He campaigned on ending tax breaks and subsidies to companies moving their factories and jobs overseas.

Now? Not so much.

You get the regulations first and THEN you give them the money. You put a whole healthcare program together BEFORE you get money for healthcare IT that, heaven only knows how it can comply with HIPAA. You keep your entire shopping list of needs & wants ON THE TABLE (single payer universal health care) BEFORE you concede it away. Anyone who has ever written a contract, negotiated a deal of any kind knows this.

Obama has done everything @$-backwards. What he does only makes sense if he's NOT a populist, NOT a liberal (we knew he wasn't, but Obama's most ardent supporters implored people to believe that "once he gets into the Oval Office, you'll see!"), and IS a continuation of the same failed policies of the transnational corporations that have destroyed the middle class.

What Obama is doing ONLY makes sense if what he wants is NOT what Obama's most ardent followers claims that they want. The only way to get Obama to do the people's bidding, get him to champion We The People and not the Corporations is for Obama's 'most ardent supporters' to stop defending him; they work against their own best interests when they do that.

Ted Strickland: Dems' Concessions On Debt Debate Are 'Very Troubling'

Candidate Obama was all over the place, depending on who was talking to at any given time and what day it was in the campaign, which primaries were done with and who he didn't need to woo anymore.

Obama got into office by misleading Democratic voters. He ran to the left of Hillary Clinton. He convinced centrists that he was a centrist. He convinced liberals he was a liberal posing as a centrist.  But guess what?

"Privately, Obama describes himself as a Blue Dog Democrat"

Blue Dog = (might as well be registered as a) Republican

During the campaign, Obama supported "healthcare reform". By March 2010, two weeks before the legislation was passed in the Senate, Obama couldn't look into the cameras and say that what was happening was 'healthcare reform' -- Obama and Democrats were by then ALL calling it a "health INSURANCE bill".

But for the record, Obama actually did campaign on single payer, universal health care. In addition to the now infamous video clip from 2003 -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpAyan1fXCE - there's a campaign ad featuring Obama himself -  http://www.factcheck.org/video/obama_motherwmv.wmv .

See the part where he says he has a plan to "cover everyone'? That's called "universal coverage". Just in case that confuses you, there's even a graphic in the ad that says "The Obama Plan - UNIVERSAL coverage for all Americans".

Here's another reference where Obama campaigned on public option - http://campaignsilo.firedoglake.com/2009/09/10/yes-obama-campaigned-on-a-public-option/

Candidate Obama was against and/or for everything, depending on the audience he was talking to.

Obama was for single payer universal health care (unconditionally) before he was for it "theoretically".   Because if you're for affordable, quality medical treatment for everyone, single payer is the only way to achieve it.

Ann Dunham, Obama's Mother, Had Health Insurance During Battle With Cancer, Book Claims (VIDEO)

Agree with everything here, but it has nothing to do with whether or not Obama stood around watching his mom fight with insurance companies while she died of cancer, which is what you and I were going back and forth about.

====================================

Actually, it has everything to do with what informs (or doesn't) Obama's decision-making.  It exemplifies a style or habit of Obama's. It's why Teabaggers say he lies.  What they attribute to lying, I attribute to skillful, weasel lawyer-speak.  But I would agree with them that it's dishonest and deceptive.

The short version is that if he had been involved in his mother's situation, he'd have known it wasn't a pre-existing condition problem with her health insurance company, but a problem with her employer's disability insurance.  And his healthcare reform wouldn't have done a thing to help her situation.

But Obama needed a personalized pre-existing condition problem in order to sell his "reform" of the healthcare system, i.e., to keep the insurance and pharmaceutical industries intact and whole (thriving even).  To pit one group against another by buying off just enough people (those who can afford to pay more for pre-existing condition coverage, or who don't realize that it's going to cost them more and find out that they can't afford it when they need it).

What Obama did was give more money and authority to an industry that millions of Americans (and their adult children and grandchildren) are tired of having to deal with and believed that putting Obama and Democrats into power in 2008 was going to end the insurance and pharmaceutical stranglehold over our health and lives.

I think the only one who's looking "hyper-emotional" is you.

The only assumption I make is that, as liberals, as Democrats, we support Democratic policies and legislation, and Obama doesn't.  Particularly on this issue, healthcare, Obama's own life experience wasn't helpful in informing his governance.  I think it is telling that in circumstances that millions of other Americans are having to deal with in their families (and will have to do much more in the future because of what Obama and Republicans are up to), Obama obfuscated any role as an advocate for his mother and does what is a theme throughout Obama's life:  He observed.

When the momentum was there for ending the insurance and pharmaceutical industries' grip on controlling Americans' access to medical treatment and employment-based insurance, Obama institutionalized their roles as gatekeepers for all time.  And he put the fox into the chicken coop, by having an insurance industry stooge writing the regulations.

Why do I call myself a democrat?  Why do you?

Listen, as long as I've got you here, perhaps you can answer this -- No other Obama fan can:

If Republicans are such scvm (and I believe they are, and you must, too, as a democrat) and "so dangerous", why isn't Obama investigating and prosecuting them?

Why isn't Obama investigating and prosecuting the greatest heist on the People in all history?

Why are Obama-Democrats continuing the war crimes of BushCheney, blocking investigations and prosecutions into their crimes?

How does a Democratic president, on the heels of the most criminally corrupt administration in the nation's history, not replace Bush-era US attorneys? Presidents may fire US attorneys, and they do so routinely at the beginning of a new administration. It is unusual to fire US attorneys in mid-term (as Bush did) except in cases of gross misconduct (which wasn’t the case during the BushAdministration). Instead of returning the democracy to the American people, Obama's AttorneyGeneral has US attorneys going after legalized medicinal marijuana in the states and Bush-style obscenity prosecutions:

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/s_691667.html

Obama's continuing just about all of the BushCheney policies, even going BushCo one better:  How do any of Obama's 'most ardent supporters' explain Obama's doctrine that presidents have the right to k!ll American citizens with no due process, no oversight, and his push for 'indefinite preventive detention' and no transparency of anything a president asserts should be his secret?   Pure Kafka.

How do Obama's 'most ardent supporters' explain his putting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans' care, et al, on the table for benefits' cuts?

As a Democrat, I don't know how any Democrat can get behind this.  How do Obama's 'most ardent supporters' explain all that to themselves?  How do you?

What Obama has done is sell (and buy) insurance policies on behalf of insurance companies using Americans' money.  Over-priced, lousy insurance policies, at that.  That's a pretty neat trick, by the way -- To sell and buy.  It's like playing chess with yourself.

Having insurance doesn't mean getting health care.  BIG DIFFERENCE.

There are no cost controls in his legislation, much less mechanisms for lowering the costs of medical care.  No controls over co-pays, no controls on deductibles.

On Countdown with Keith Olbermann, whistleblower Wendell Potter talks with Lawrence O'Donnell about where the con game (medical loss ratio, the amount of money insurers must spend on health care) is in the legislation, and how it will enable insurance companies to continue to price gauge and keep obscene profits instead of delivering affordable and quality medical care to policy-holders.

Obama's legislation is not universal, it has no chance of expanding to cover everyone, and it leads to the end of all public healthcare programs (Medicaid, Medicare, SCHIP, CHAMPUS, veterans care, etc.). That's a fact.

Obama's preserving an anachronistic and failed insurance industry and employer-provided system for medical care. It's government sanctioned racketeering.  Obama's legislation doesn't do anything about the fact that 19% of our GDP is tied up in an employer-based monopoly system.  Ending employment-based insurance was what everybody wanted.

Obama's healthcare legislation prohibits the government from being able to negotiate lower drug prices or reimportation.

The insurance mandate is, indeed, a tax. Contrary to what Obama claimed, the IRS will be the enforcer, which means compounded fines and prison.

And we would have already had a public option, the votes were there, had Obama not nixxed it.

You ought to read his books, listen to his speeches.  It's his account.

"I remember in the last month of her life, she wasn't thinking about how to get well, she wasn't thinking about coming to terms with her own mortality, she was thinking about whether or not insurance was going to cover the medical bills and whether our family would be bankrupt as a consequence."

At the very least, I'm shocked that Obama, a lawyer, wouldn't have alleviated her anxiety by telling her that neither her children nor her parents would be on the hook for her medical bills.

Did your mother die of uterine cancer?

Do you know what uterine cancer is like?

Do you know what dying of cancer is like?

Have you had or have you ever seen, taken care of, known anyone who has had surgery, chemo- and  radiation therapy for cancer?

Anyone who talks about "fiercely independent" people in hospital beds not wanting their adult professional children helping them with insurance companies doesn't know what they're talking about.

#1 - Obama wrote extensively about it.  I have no reason to doubt Obama's own account; his lawyerly precision with language lays it out well.

Let's talk about your grandfather.  How do you know what his 6 children did or didn't do when he was sick and dying (I presume he died)?  Did insurance companies refuse to cover his medical bills when he was dying?  Was it a lingering illness?  What did he die from?  Who cared for him?  How long was he hospitalized?

Ann Dunham died of uterine cancer, which is a painful and miserable death.  In addition to debilitating treatments for the cancer, the pain medication would have made her welcome any advocacy she could get.

While this is neither here nor there as it pertains to your comment, but you do know that Obama is NOT a liberal, not a progressive, but a Blue Dog (which means he might as well re-register as a Republican), don't you?   Would you feel the same kind of loyalty toward Reagan and defend him like you defend and support Obama?  Because your support and defense of Obama is equivalent to that.  Obama's as invested in your well-being and interests as Reagan was.

Pelosi: Republicans May Need To See Markets Plunge To Support Debt Ceiling Deal

The Progressive Caucus, at 82 members, is the largest of all of the caucuses in Congress.

The majority of the Democratic Party's voters, as well as the majority of Americans, when informed of the issues, agree with liberal policies and legislation.  Neither they (nor I) would characterize themselves as far-anything or extreme, but mainstream. For example, nobody likes the idea of abortion, but most Americans do not want the government involved if they find themselves in the predicament of an unwanted pregnancy. And if you frame it as, "You like to k!ll babies?!?! ?!?!", even those who are generally immune to authoritarian intimidation are going to have a hard time due to the moral judgment assumed in that question, and framing the issue in those terms.

The rich have gotten rich by redistributing the wealth.  They've gotten breaks that are not available to the poor and middle classes.

This nation was based on the premise of "the Common Good".  2% uber rich to 98% hanging on by their fingernails isn't a common good thing.

As long as you merely wish and don't demand, you're right, it won't happen.

We on the left ended the Vietnam War because we wouldn't take no for an answer.  We took to the streets in Washington and around the nation; Nixon literally hid out in the White House.

Pelosi: Republicans May Need To See Markets Plunge To Support Debt Ceiling Deal

Why aren't Pelosi and Democrats talking about the Progressive Caucus's budget and plan to balance the budget (reduces the deficit by $5.1 trillion)?  It beats Obama's AND Republicans' plans.

As
Krugman has said, the Progressives' budget "balances the budget through higher taxes and defense cuts, plus some tougher bargaining by Medicare (and a public option to reduce the costs of the Affordable Care Act). The proposed tax hikes would fall on higher incomes, raising the cap on payroll taxes (takes care of Social Security's solvency forever)... and unlike the Ryan plan, it actually makes sense."

Who would trust a progressive plan?

====================================

Most Americans who read it.

Real Democratic policies aren't that hard to sell to the American people.

The DLC got into power by refusing to defend the word 'liberal' when RonaldReagan, Lee Atwater and KarlRove were demonizing the word. Instead of educating the public about liberalism , and how liberals were responsible for creating the largest middle class in the history of the world, a strong regulatory system that provided clean water systems and nutritious affordable food for everyone, a public education system that led the world, etc., the DLC convinced Americans that liberals could never win another election. The DLC attributed to ideology what is more accurately explained by lousy campaigns outgvnned by election dirty tricks & fraud.

When informed of the issues, most Americans agree with liberal policies. Neither they (nor I) would characterize themselves as far-anything or extreme, but mainstream. For example, nobody likes the idea of abortion, but most Americans do not want the government involved if they find themselves in the predicament of an unwanted pregnancy. If the Bush years taught us anything, it's that anyone can sell anything to Americans, if you're stolid and relentless in your sales pitch and tactics. It's not that Bush and R0ve were geniuses and knew something that nobody else knew; Bush and Rove were just more ruthless in doing what politicians and the parties had gone to great lengths to hide from Americans -- If you keep at it, escalate your attacks,  don't take 'no' for an answer and never back away, you will wear the opposition down.

Ann Dunham, Obama's Mother, Had Health Insurance During Battle With Cancer, Book Claims

“For my mother to die of cancer at the age of 53 and have to spend the last months of her life in the hospital room arguing with insurance companies because they’re saying that this may be a pre-existing condition and they don’t have to pay her treatment, there’s something fundamentally wrong about that.”

Barack Obama was 35 years old when his mother died.  He was a lawyer and teaching at the University of Chicago.  He'd been married to Michelle (a practicing attorney) for 3 years at that point, and had not yet had children (their eldest, Malia, wouldn't be born for another 3 years).

Why was his hospitalized dying mother the one arguing with insurance companies?

In the past twenty years, most middle class Americans have had to advocate on behalf of sick and terminally ill parents and grandparents in their battles with their insurance companies.  It's what has helped inform our opinion and demands for healthcare reform, beginning with getting insurance companies out of the role of gatekeeper to medical treatment.  A sick and dying Ann Dunham had two adult children (one of whom was a lawyer married to a lawyer) who stood around in her hospital room while she argued with an insurance company on the phone.

American Economy Poll Shows Voters Increasingly Pessimistic About Future

Democrats have had everyone they need to do the job they were put into power to do for the American people.

During the Bush years, Democrats said if the People wanted change, they had to put Democrats in the majority in Congress. In 2006, we did.  Nothing changed.

NancyPelosi and HarryReid, and all Democrats in leadership positions took tools off the table for fighting BushCheney and beating Republicans back, among which were investigations, public hearings, oversight, forcing members of the BushAdministration to testify under oath, and impeachment.

They said, "You have to give us more Democrats -- 60 in the Senate".

In 2008, we gave them 60 for the DemocraticCaucus. And we gave them the White House.

Obama came into office with the wind at his back. More people voted for him, a black man in good old raclst America than ever voted for any other presidential candidate in the history of the US. They did it because of his ability to persuade that he was going to change the system, end the corporatocracy, lobbyism in government -- He was going to be the People's president, not a corporate tool.

And no sooner did Obama get elected than he slammed the brakes on the momentum of his election & a filibuster-proof Senate (tentative yet, with 2 senators, Kennedy & Byrd, at death's door), Obama did a 180-degree turn on his promises & slooooowed everything down. To "work in a bipartisan manner with Republicans", after Republicans had already announced they were going to block everything Democrats wanted to do, vote no on everything, in lockstep.

Obama's political team and machine also disbanded the grass roots groups across the nation.  Those who know anything about politics know that this was a dead giveaway that the last thing these politicians want is an active populist movement.

Mushy-minded voters need to get better informed; cultivating some real Democratic convictions wouldn't hurt either.  Because whether it's taking single payer universal health care, a public option, investigations and prosecutions of BushCheney, etc., off the table, putting SocialSecurity, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans' care, etc., on the table, or continuing the BushCheney policies and going BushCheney one better (by asserting that presidents have the right to k!ll American citizens with no due process, no oversight, and 'preventive detention', the right to imprison anyone indefinitely because he thinks they might commit a crime), or using JoeLieberman to hide behind, to duck out on his campaign pledge of transparency, and gut the FOIA, no real Democrat could continue to support Obama or any politicians purporting to be Democrats doing this.
