Just remember that the water is supposed to be crystal clear blue, with great visibility (especially this time of year, up to 100, 125 feet). It should look like this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS4CstwP0Wc

Oil Spill: NOAA Says Gulf Seafood Tested Is Safe So Far

"did not show CONCERNING levels of contaminants"

==========================================

There are two basic risks to seafood safety as a result of the DeepwaterHorizon blowout that you may want to consider: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) from the oil itself and the chemical dispersants (Corexit) being sprayed on the oil/seawater.

PAHs are carcinogenic petroleum compounds with the potential to cause cancer in humans. The FDA has NOT established any safe level for humans.

Different species of seafood accumulate PAHs to different extents -- bivalve molluscs (like oysters) absorb the most, crustaceans (like crabs) less, with fish absorbing least.

It's the fisheries themselves that set the acceptable level of PAH contamination for each category of seafood.

The biggest threat to the safe consumption of Gulf seafood is the widespread use chemical dispersants. Of what little is known about Corexit and what's in it, several of the known chemical components in it are toxic to both humans & sea-life, and have the potential to bioconcentrate (can accumulate over time in the tissues of fish and shell-fish).

BP & the Coast Guard have dumped hundreds of thousands of gallons of Corexit into the Gulf with no plans to stop.

Most concerning of all, NO TESTS have been done on Corexit's effect on humans.

There also is no chemical testing being done on seafood for Corexit contamination. Just the "sniff" test, & even that's been 'gamed', in favor of approving possibly tainted seafood for sale for human consumption:

Debt Commission Leaders Paint Gloomy Picture During National Governors Association Meeting

And while we're on the subject of Americans NOT granting permission to politicians to raid the Social Security fund, the 2000 election was a coup d'etat. Bloodless, but a coup nonetheless.

If ever a president came into office with less political capital, who should have been working in a "bipartisan" manner (and not ramming through his campaign promises of "tax cuts for the rich"), it was Bush. All that Bush should have been allowed to do after the Supreme Court named him to the White House was implement Gore's campaign promises, beginning with paying back what had been stolen from the Social Security trust fund.

The idea that Obama (who came into office with more votes than any previous president, a filibuster-proof Senate, a huge majority in the House) wasted a moment on "bipartisanship" given that Republicans stated straight out that they were going to vote in lockstep against everything he & Democrats proposed AND that two senators of that 60 were on de@th's door (Kennedy & Byrd) should convince everyone that Obama's a DINO, a corporate t00I.

Add to that, the fact that Obama has NEVER used any pressure at all on Joe Lieberman. Obama insisted he caucus with Democrats and keep the chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, over REAL Democrats who have served Democratic policy interests. That meant no real investigation into FEMA, into Bush's corrupt inept administration's response to Hurricane Katrina.

Debt Commission Leaders Paint Gloomy Picture During National Governors Association Meeting

Democratic voters have mistakenly believed that Obama&Democrats want what they want. The DLC-controlled DemocraticParty gives lip service to all populist issues (like PublicHealthcare, banking reform, job stimulus, green sustainable energy, anti-war, closing Guantanamo, etc.).

If the Bush years taught us nothing else, it's that anyone can sell anything to Americans, if you're stolid & relentless in your sales pitch & tactics. It's not that Bush&R0ve were geniuses & knew something that nobody else knew; Bush&R0ve were just more ruthless (clumsy & careless many political graybeards would say) in doing what politicians & the parties had gone to great lengths to hide from Americans.

Obama didn't get to be the first black president, vanquish the Clinton machine (to get the nomination) & the oldest, most experienced politicians in our nation's history (including the Rove machine) by not having mastered these skills. Nor do Democratic politicians (more incumbents than ever, in office longer) not know how to do it. How do you think Democrats managed to keep impeaching Bush&Cheney off the table & have us still reelecting them, not marching on Washington with torches&pitchforks?

Obama&Democrats know how to do it -- They don't want to do it.

The trick for them has been to keep the many different populist groups believing that they really do support our issues, but they're merely inept. And to get us to keep voting for them despite their failure to deliver on any of our alleged shared objectives.

Social Security has absolutely nothing to do with the federal deficit, as it's a separate self-funding program.

Another Katrina Myth Busted...by Science

Actually, most of New Orleans is NOT below sea level. Also, all of the areas that tourists visit (French Quarter, Garden District, etc.) are well above sea level. The old parts of the city were built on high ground and did not flood during Katrina.

However, much of greater New Orleans is built on land that was once a swamp. The swamps were drained by building a wall (levee) around them and pumping out the water. The Dutch claim land from the sea exactly the same way. The newly-created land is protected from flooding by the levees (the Dutch call them dykes) and the city's storm drain system is designed to pump rain water "up" from lower areas.

Note that New Orleans HAS to be where it is located. The city is the principal port on the Gulf of Mexico due to the Mississippi River and the largest or second largest US port each year (tons of cargo). It is not possible to move the river or the Gulf and that is why people "insist" on living in New Orleans. Rebuilding the city after Katrina is not optional.
