Obama Will Seek To Scale Back Drug War In Second Term: Report

Monday, July 2, 2012

The only ones being gamed are Obama's 'most ardent supporters'.

Obama's 'most ardent supporters' claim that he's a centrist.

They say that he always has been & that those Democratic voters who voted for him because they believed him to be a populist, a liberal, weren't listening (forget the fact that Obama ran an aggressive progressive campaign, and to the left of Hillary). And, they say, conservatives who insist Obama's a liberal are either stup!d or so far right and unpolitically savvy, they don't even belong svcking up space and time on political discussion threads.

To those who thought that during the 2008 campaign, Obama was a moderate and wasn't trying to deceive anyone, what did you think he meant when you heard him saying during the campaign that people had to stay involved after the election, that they couldn't just vote for him, go away for four years and expect that he would do what they had hoped. That "there are powerful interests working against what the people want, and if you want me to do your bidding, you would have to make me do it".

What did you think he was talking about?  Did you think he was just being honest, admitting he could be corrupted?  Did you think he was trying to deceive centrists, corporatists, into believing he was really on their side but liberals and progressives could get him to keep his promises to them if they sat on him, kept after him?

What do you think it takes to get Obama to keep his campaign promises?  Because his healthcare legislation doesn't do it, his finance reform legislation doesn't do it (it wouldn't have prevented the meltdown, nor will it prevent the next one).  What did you think when Obama said it was Congress's job to write the healthcare bill, he was staying out of it, and then you learned that Obama was double-dealing the committees writing the bill, cutting secret deals with PhRma, hospitals, Big Insurance (then lied about it, said they hadn't), which Congress would be bound by?

What did you think when Obama and Rahm Emanuel, as soon as they got into the White House, went after Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin, two people with no job in the Republican Party, instead of the Republican leadership in Congress?  What did you think when after the 2008 election, with the GOP not only on the ropes but down for the count, got a pardon from Obama?

Why is Obama leaving the grass roots on the sidelines?
By Sam Graham-Felsen

Obama entered the White House with more than a landslide victory over Sen. John McCain. He brought with him a vast network of supporters, instantly reachable through an unprecedented e-mail list of 13 million people. These supporters were not just left-wing activists but a broad coalition that included the young, African Americans, independents and even Republicans - and they were ready to be mobilized.

It's not just the 13 million on the Obama campaign's email list being held down, but Obama and the DLC-controlled Democratic Party told groups usually identified as Democratic supporters to stand down, not run campaigns to get populist legislation like a public option through, because the White House wanted top-down control over all activities to get whatever legislation it wanted to get passed into law.

I think the best comparison for what Obama did when he deactivated the email list and had Democratic activists stand down is to Bush attacking, invading and occupying Iraq, and then firing the Iraqi army and disbanding the Baath Party.  It left millions of Iraqis without any income, the nation in rubble and ruin without electricity, water, government services, no functioning infrastructure or rule of law.

I think Bush did it to create an atmosphere of chaos in order to push Iraqis into becoming insurgents, which would provide the neocons with an excuse for remaining in Iraq and occupying it for years and decades.

What possible reason could Obama have for neutralizing the activist wing of the Democratic Party, and then blame not getting real Democratic legislation passed on not being able to move Blue Dogs and Republicans to support it when Obama never even tried to pressure Blue Dogs and Republicans?

And during the first campaign, what were you telling yourself and others when Obama flip-flopped on his FISA position?

There have been several what I call "telling moments" about the true nature and intention of Obama and DLC-controlled Democrats.

Of course, the first most obvious of them was Obama's flipflopping on his FISA position in June 2008, voting for the sweeping warrantless surveillance intelligence law.  Obama missed the February vote on that FISA bill as he campaigned in the "Potomac Primaries" (he was running then as "lefter than Hillary), but issued a statement that day declaring "I am proud to stand with Senator Dodd, Senator Feingold and a grassroots movement of Americans who are refusing to let President Bush put protections for special interests ahead of our security and our liberty."

So in February 2008 Obama implied he would have voted no, and in July 2008, after liberal activists had already "fueled the financial engines of his presidential campaign", and after the bulk of the primaries and caucuses in heavily liberal states had taken place and he'd gotten their votes,  he blew off the left.

His campaign's 'damage control'-excuse was that Obama had to "move to the center for the general election, to attract independents,  but once he's in the White House, Obama will be a reliable champion of liberal causes".

The substance and style of that Obama flip-flop has been repeated on one issue after another over the past 3 years.

Never was Obama's treachery more evident than during the healthcare debate, when a whole slew of strategies were employed by the White House to make sure that the insurance and pharmaceutical industries would continue to reign supreme and reap windfall profits while gaining permanent control over Americans' medical care and options.

Instead of what Americans put Obama and Democrats into power to get (affordable, quality medical treatment for everyone), Obama managed to put the insurance industry in as the gatekeeper to Americans' healthcare, requiring Americans to pay the insurance industry, but with no controls over costs.

Having health insurance ≠ medical treatment.

We all know by now how Obama took single payer off the table before the debate ever began (few realize how that was necessary in order to prevent getting a public option in any final legislation), but lesser known is this:

So you're voting for Romney, then...  Gotcha.

==========================

We're not limited to voting for just Democrats and Republicans. There are other alternatives besides sitting out the election or voting for Republicans. There are other candidates running as independents, from Green to Libertarian, in just about every race.  If for no other reason than to get the percentage that is necessary for getting a seat at the table, I think that may be enough for great numbers of Democratic voters this time around.  And we'd better do it because with each passing day it becomes impossible to turn this all around.  This week's primaries swept out a bunch of incumbent Blue Dogs.

I say this as an old, OLD liberal Democrat (a 'New Deal' Democrat) who has never voted for a Republican, never will, but I can honestly say that I can't imagine ever voting for a Democrat again.

Why would he wait if not as a ploy, another empty campaign promise, just like his others in 2008?

Why not end it NOW?

Why not stop his Justice Department from shutting down medicinal marijuana dispensaries?

You can't make claims like "Obama killed OBL", the circumstances and proof of which Obama went to great lengths to conceal, and expect to be believed and unchallenged, especially when you ran on transparency and undermine the machinery of a people-run democracy.

Obama's broken promises on transparency.  His war on whistleblowers.

Obama in his own words:

"Transparency Will Be Touchstone"

"On transparency", "About inviting the people back into their government again", and "Part of the job of the next American president is making Americans believe that our government is working for them, because right now they don't feel like it's working for them. They feel like it's working for special interests and it's working for corporations"

"We need a president who sees the government not as a tool to enrich well connected friends and high-priced lobbyists, but as a defender of fairness and opportunity for every single American. That's what this country's been about and that's the kind of president I intend to be"

"Meetings where laws are written will be more open to the public, no more secrecy.....No more secrecy....."

Actually, it's spelled 'capiche'.

And I won't be voting for Obama, not because of that one flip-flop, but because of his flip-flopping on just about all of his campaign promises, and his continuing Bush-Cheney policies and getting Republican legislation enacted into law.  If I had wanted Republican policies and legislation, I'd have voted for the real McCoys (Republicans) and not DINOs.  I'm funny that way; I like my elected my government, my elected representatives, my politics and politicians open, direct and honest.

Capeesh?

Anyone who says "Obama killed OBL", I ask "How do you know?"

The greatest terrorist attack on the US and the alleged perpetrator, ill with kidney disease, a towering figure of 6'4" living and traveling among 5 and-a-half-foot people, eludes apprehension for a decade, and when we ultimately get him we quickly dispose of the body where it can never be exhumed, refuse to release photographs or anything confirming the death ("Take our word for it") and hide the SEAL time and let conflicting accounts of what happened remain.

It's as likely to be true as the official account of 9/11, where the US sent all of the steel from the WTC to China, untested, to be recycled.

We don't do that.  We salvage downed air planes from the bottom of the ocean and reconstruct them in hangars to find out what happened.

Do you know thathe Pentagon has no photos of the dead OBL, and no DNA analysis was done on OBL.

If you want to talk about OBL, then let's throw the windows open and get a real investigation.  Starting with what actually happened on 9/11 (the 911 Commission was a cruel joke), the policies that led to 9/11, our response to it, the post-9/11 policies which have us in a perpetual state of war with Americans being no safer.

Ohfercrissakes.

What Candidate Obama promises, President Obama flip-flops.

If it's not on drugs ("I will not use Justice Department resources to circumvent state laws on medical marijuana", it's on something everything else:

6/2/08 - Candidate Obama Promises To Impose Windfall Profits Tax On Oil & Gas Industry

6/25/08, what Candidate Obama will do to help consumers with rising gas prices included a second round of stimulus rebate checks, impose a windfall profits tax on oil companies, and close the Enron Loophole that allows for speculation's unregulated upward pressure on gas prices.

The first of Obama's many broken pledges & promises once he got elected was reneging on his pledge to impose 'Windfall Profits Taxes on the Oil & Gas Industry", etc.:

11/10/08 - President-Elect Obama Abandons Windfall Profits Tax on Oil Companies

12/23/08 - When pressed about his abrupt about face on imposing windfall profits taxes, President-Elect Obama said, "The prices have now dropped - We'll see about doing that if or when they rise again."

Since 12/08, the price of oil has reached $80/barrel several times, which is the amount that Candidate Obama had pledged would trigger his windfall profits tax.

East Coast Storms: Residents Struggling As Power Outages Continue

blast from the past, from when Trent Lott was still in the Senate (and Senate Majority Leader), and Congress was debating cutting LIHEAP (low income energy assistance) -- He didn't believe people died from heat waves:

Mr. LOTT.  I have sort of a long history with this program. Years ago on my watch we started this temporary program, this emergency program called LIHEAP, energy assistance. Well, here we are, 10 years later, almost 10, it is still here, and it is growing.

I guess one thing that shocked me, and this is an admission against my interests, when I realized it went from being ``heating'' assistance to being ``heating and air-conditioning'' assistance, I began to think: How far will this go?

I was in the ninth grade before we had air-conditioning, and we survived. We did not suffocate. It was damn hot down there on the Mississippi gulf coast. You could not open your windows because mosquitos would come in because we did not have screens on the windows.

So, now, millions is going into air-conditioning. And then we have heat. What is it we are not going to give people for free? Is there any limit? Is there any limit to the amount of money? I thought we were having global warming. I thought it was a mild winter.

Yes, my bills have gone up. Mine have gone up astronomically in my State because of the disaster.

I thank the Senators from Maine, particularly SenatorSnowe, for this not being connected to the flood insurance proposal. Flood insurance is a completely different issue, and because people paid for this coverage, it has already been paid for, they paid the Government for their flood insurance, and now they are going to say: Gee, because the Senate once again does not do its job and is playing games with us, we are not going to get the checks for the coverage we already paid for? I don't understand that.

Second, SenatorCoburn and others who are opposed to this LIHEAP proposal have acted responsibly. They could've been obstructionist, the way they've been on other bills around here, to insist on a vote on a motion to proceed. The Senators from Maine are going to make their case.

Those who are opposed to it will make our case. We'll have a vote. One side or the other will win, and then I recommend we go forward at that point.

HEAT KILLS.
