'Gasland' Documentary Shows Water That Burns, Toxic Effects Of Natural Gas Drilling (VIDEO)

Monday, June 21, 2010

In addition to BobbyJindal's & DavidVitters's request to lift the moratorium, we've already seen MaryLandrieu make a pitch for more drilling the very day after this disaster began. Obama hasn't shut down BP's other operations in US waters (Atlantis is potentially a worse nightmare than Deepwater Horizon and is still operating in the Gulf of Mexico, and according to reports last week, BP is moving ahead with drilling in the arctic). Obama's also moving ahead to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling in the Gulf at shallower depths, despite the fact that the Ixtoc and Montara blowouts that gushed for months were in shallow water.

If Louisiana's industries are 1) oil, gas, chemicals, and 2) fishing and tourism, and fishing and tourism is destroyed, how else is Louisiana going to make up the state's lost revenues if not by increasing offshore drilling?

And if BP were held responsible, 100%, for the damage & went bankrupt, the costs would fall to the US taxpayer (or it wouldn't be paid or cleaned up at all). Other oil conglomerates would step up & reap the benefit of unlimited drilling in a ruined Gulf of Mexico.

We need to get off of an oil economy, and not gradually. This isn't a job for the "split the difference"-"cut the baby in two"-Barack Obama. This calls for bold leadership.”

Gulf Oil Spill Job Losses Could Total 1 MILLION Over Next 5 Years: David Kotok

Obama & Democrats would love for their supporters to believe it's all the Republicans' fault.

The fact of the matter is that Democrats don't need Republicans for passing what they want. Democrats enjoy a greater majority in both houses of Congress than either party has in decades. Even without 60. But Obama doesn't need 60 to pass legislation. He doesn't need Republicans to pass legislation.

All Democrats need: 50 + Biden

But they won't do that.

Democrats also won't exercise the discretion that Rule 22 allows: Making Republicans actually filibuster, instead of just threatening to do it.

Rule 22 gives the Senate Majority Leader the discretion to actually make the call. Filibustering is hard on those soft, pampered bodies. HarryReid should them do it, over every issue where they threaten to do it -- Americans love reality TV. 'Survivor - E Capitol St NE & 1st St NE'

But Obama & the DLC-controlled Democratic Party aren't doing that. Because it might actually work to get Democratic voters' legislative agenda made into the law of the land & do good for the People. And that's not what Obama&Company are there for. They are there to do the work of the transnational corporations, and preventing that are the liberals.

So Obama reaches out for Republicans, watering down the legislation that they won't vote for. Because everything that the parties do, both parties, is for the next election campaign.

Democrats could even change the supermajority rule, do it by SIMPLE majority (50 +

Not only was he badgered into doing it, he's been doing as little as possible, and Iying to support his failure to respond adequately.

Do you remember Obama's press conference a couple of weeks ago? http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2010/05/obama_on_bp_oil_spill_im_fully.html Do you recall the excuse he gave, about why his Interior Department issued exemptions to BP:

"[T]here is a thorough environmental review as to whether a certain portion of the Gulf should be leased or not. . . . .Under current law, the Interior Department has only 30 days to review an exploration plan submitted by an oil company. That leaves no time for the appropriate environmental review. The result is, they're continually waived. And this is just one example of a law that was tailored by the industry to serve their needs instead of the public's."

It's not true.

Haley Barbour: Drilling Moratorium Worse Than The Spill

Stop talking about jobs being lost in a murderous, hateful industry as a bad thing.

To those who complain that jobs will be lost in the offshore drilling business, "F*ck your jobs!" That goes double for burning coal & chopping down redwoods. Sorry roughnecks, but eventually you're going to have to find something else to do. Try building windmills. All that happens when they fall into the sea is a splash.

It's Washington gospel that jobs in the private sector are better than government jobs. But oil jobs are private & look at the toll this industry takes -- Cooking the planet, enslaving us to Saudi Arabia & killing animals.

If the government hired away all the 58,000 oil workers who work in the state of Louisiana & paid them their same salary to work repairing infrastructure & building solar panels, it would cost $5.5 billion dollars.

Yes, the oil industry creates jobs; so does the kiddie p0rn industry.

Imagine someone making the argument that business must be allowed to dump toxic waste straight into our waterways because treating is expensive & that will cost jobs & growth. Is that really any different than Haley Barbour talking about the need for continued deep water drilling?

Your job needs to go when it starts killing things. You can get another job. Jobs come & go, but once a species is extinct it's forever. Calling something "your job" doesn't make it sacred. Everything can't come down to money.
