The DLC has morphed into a number of different fronts these days, including No Labels and The Third Way.

You can start here, google DLC or Democratic Leadership Council, check wikipedia, etc.  http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x1515212

What I'm saying isn't any secret.  It's not something that DLCers even deny.  It's something that they're proud of.

Heat Wave Blankets Midwest, East Coast

A blast from the past, from when Trent Lott was still in the Senate and Congress was debating cutting LIHEAP (low income energy assistance) -- He didn't believe people died from heat waves:

Mr. LOTT.  I have sort of a long history with this program. Years ago on my watch we started this temporary program, this emergency program called LIHEAP, energy assistance. Well, here we are, 10 years later, almost 10, it is still here, and it is growing.

I guess one thing that shocked me, and this is an admission against my interests, when I realized it went from being ``heating'' assistance to being ``heating and air-conditioning'' assistance, I began to think: How far will this go?

I was in the ninth grade before we had air-conditioning, and we survived. We did not suffocate. It was damn hot down there on the Mississippi gulf coast. You could not open your windows because mosquitos would come in because we did not have screens on the windows.

So, now, millions is going into air-conditioning. And then we have heat. What is it we are not going to give people for free? Is there any limit? Is there any limit to the amount of money? I thought we were having global warming. I thought it was a mild winter.

Yes, my bills have gone up. Mine have gone up astronomically in my State because of the disaster.

I thank the Senators from Maine, particularly SenatorSnowe, for this not being connected to the flood insurance proposal. Flood insurance is a completely different issue, and because people paid for this coverage, it has already been paid for, they paid the Government for their flood insurance, and now they are going to say: Gee, because the Senate once again does not do its job and is playing games with us, we are not going to get the checks for the coverage we already paid for? I don't understand that.

Second, SenatorCoburn and others who are opposed to this LIHEAP proposal have acted responsibly. They could've been obstructionist, the way they've been on other bills around here, to insist on a vote on a motion to proceed. The Senators from Maine are going to make their case.

Those who are opposed to it will make our case. We'll have a vote. One side or the other will win, and then I recommend we go forward at that point.

HEAT KILLS.

I think Hillary's fans have an idealized view of her concocted from a comparison she suggested years ago, during her husband's administration, with Eleanor Roosevelt.  The comparison, by the way, wasn't with Mrs. Roosevelt's political leanings.

Candidate Obama ran to the left of Hillary, do you remember?  Between mandates and her war hawk tendencies, I don't make the claim that she'd be no different lightly.  She's DLC to the bone.  This gridlock that exists is really about political theater.  It's to let Obama try to position himself as reasonable.  For different reasons, Hillary would have been gridlocked, too.  Everything that gridlocked her husband's administration would be revisited, as the basis for new scandals he's in (new girlfriends, new hedge fund irregularities, etc., and perhaps it would be expanded to include Chelsea and her husband's hedge fund activities, as well as the Clinton Initiative eyebrow-raisers).

Is this really news to you?  Do you really not know the DLC, its history and what it's been doing?

I'll give you links but first, if you would, explain to me what you think the Democratic Party's business plan is and how do you think they've intended to achieve it?  Do you think Obama, or Bill and Hillary Clinton are liberals?

I'm wondering how many of you were around and recall the Savings and Loan bailout?

That was the first and largest major scandal of a Bush administration.  It was $500 billion and that was a mind-blowing amount.   Honestly.  People couldn't get their minds wrapped around it, and what, if we didn't do it, was going to happen to the economy.  Especially seniors.

Once we did it, the bitter bile of doing it contributed to Bush's losing in '92, because of the economic ground that middle class Americans lost, of what fell to them to have to fix so that a relatively few rich phat cats could keep ill-gotten gains.  It brought into bold relief just what a fraud Reaganomics was, and how working Americans got shafted by Republicans.

Then in the 1990s, like now, Democratic politicians let Republicans off the hook, to become resurrected and do it all again.

Until people realize that Ds and Rs are in it together, like a relay team handing the baton off to each other to consolidate their gains, we're never going to be the America that we believe we are, where anyone can succeed and work their way up and out of poverty through education and hard work.

It feeds into Obama's caving pattern to urge citizens be patient, because then by having fended off organized revolt by the people, it becomes too late to do anything about it.  "Catastrophe is at hand, the bill has to get passed!"

The Tea Party is like Al Qaeda -- A phantom group of a couple of dozen.  The "Tea Party" is Dick Armey, the Koch brothers, Grover Nordquist.  Their numbers are miniscule.  What they are is a money machine.  As long as they are caved to, there can be no reform which will prevent their spending money to buy starving and ignorant supporters who roar at the sight of red meat, but have no real interest in politics.

The Tea Party is an effective nemesis for Obama and helps him and the DLC deliver to their (and Republicans') Corporate Masters.  The Tea Party is a paper tiger, a scapegoat, and not the real problem.  This is all Kabuki theater, to push us into accepting being robbed blind while politicians in both parties jockey for positions of favor and power within the corporatocracy.

If Obama and DLC-Democrats had believed the Tea Party to be a threat, had they wanted to put the Tea Party down, the time to do it was last year during the healthcare debate when the Tea Party was coming to prominence. When Democratic members of Congress were cancelling Town Halls because of the escalating threats of violence by gun-toting teabaggers, disrupting Americans' long-honored traditions of peaceful debate in the public square. Instead of taking to the bully pulpit, instead of increasing security on government properties hosting these events, Obama disappeared from the healthcare debate to cut secret deals with Big Insurance, PhRma, hospitals, the AMA, etc., and then he lie d about it, all the while that the Tea Party grew and bullied at Town Halls.

What Obama also did during the same Town Hall time period? He unleashed federal security forces to Pittsburgh to break up peaceful protests of the G20 meeting, using the new weaponry on dissenters who the 'establishment elites' really fear, and stem the unrest that actually threatens the 'elites', i.e., the American people taking back their government. -http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/blog/2009/sep/25/sonic-cannon-g20-pittsburgh

Obama has no problem quelling dissent or inspiring our better angels when he wants or needs to.

Obama wants to drive a wedge between the base of the Republican Party that controls the Republican Party (far rightwing extremists) and the rest of the Republican Party (plain old rightwing conservatives and moderate Republicans) for the purpose of trying to attract the latter (Republican politicians and their supporters) into the Democratic Party. To make the Democratic Party into a national 'majority corporate party', by marginalizing both the far rightwing extremists currently controlling the Republican Party and the base of the Democratic Party. In order "to govern, from the center, for 100 years".

The Tea Party serves this end it several ways. Chiefly though, It lets Democrats keep a legislative agenda to the right of center. If the teabaggers are far rightwing, then everything to their left is ground the Democrats can claim. And that's a lot of corporate-money ground.

Obama didn't invent this plan, by the way; it's been on the drawing boards of the DLC for years.

Republicans are scvm.  There's no way around that.

Why aren't Pelosi and Democrats talking about the ProgressiveCaucus's budget (The People's Budget - read it hereto balance the budget (reduces the deficit by $5.1 trillion)?  It beats Obama's AND Republicans' plans.

As Krugman said, the Progressives' budget "balances the budget through higher taxes and defense cuts, plus some tougher bargaining by Medicare (and a public option to reduce the costs of the AffordableCareAct). The proposed tax hikes would fall on higher incomes, raising the cap on payroll taxes (takes care of SocialSecurity's solvency forever)... and unlike the Ryan plan, it actually makes sense."

Democratic voters have mistakenly believed that Obama and Democrats want what they want. The DLC-controlled DemocraticParty gives lip service to all populist issues (like civil rights protections, restoring habeas corpus, ending the wars, public healthcare, WallStreet reform, environmental and energy issues, etc.).

If the Bush years taught us anything, it's that anyone can sell anything to Americans, if you're stolid and relentless in your sales pitch and tactics. It's not that Bush and Rove were geniuses and knew something that nobody else knew; Bush and Rove were just more ruthless in doing what politicians and the parties had gone to great lengths to hide from Americans -- If you keep at it, escalate your attacks,  don't take 'no' for an answer and never back away, you will wear the opposition down.

Obama didn't get to be the first black president, vanquish the Clinton machine (to get the nomination) and the oldest, most experienced politicians in US history (including the Rove machine) by not having mastered these skills. Nor do Democratic politicians (more incumbents than ever, in office longer) not know how to do it. How do you think Democrats managed to keep impeaching Bush and Cheney off the table, have us still reelecting them and not marching on Washington with torches and pitchforks?

Obama and Democrats know how to do it -- They don't want to do it.

The trick for them has been to keep the many different populist groups believing that they really do support our issues, but they're merely inept. And to get us to keep voting for them despite their failure to achieve our alleged shared objectives.

Getting Democratic voters (and Obama's 'most ardent supporters') to understand that Democratic politicians have been taking us all for suckers and patsies is the most immediate problem and the challenge.
