Net Neutrality: We're Still Waiting

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

It's good that this and other issues important to the online community be front and center in the weeks before the election.

Voters should be measuring the effectiveness of their elected representatives, all of them, including Obama, even though he's not up for reelection this time).  It's not accurate at all to lay this on Republican obstructionism.  Yes, Republicans are a problem, but the fact that Obama and Democrats don't do everything within their power to further the ball tells us that they're not the people to get the job done on our behalf.

My own representative is the head of the Progressive Caucus in the House and a less powerful, more non-effective person would be hard to come by.  When members of the Progressive Caucus take a pledge (like not voting on any healthcare reform legislation that doesn't include a public option) and then renege on it, en masse, it's time for them to lose their seats in Congress.  If it means that a Republican gets in, so be it.  It's just for 2 years (we survived Bush & Cheney for 8), and in the interim we find real Democrats and not DLCers (DINOs) to bring the nation back to sanity.

We know now that Obama is not committed to working on behalf of the People.  Just the corporations.

What am I smoking?

Obama has blocked and buried scientific information about the true amount of oil, the extent of the damage, let BP run the show (he's let criminals process their own crime scene), made an inadequate and bogus non-binding deal with BP, allowed BP to poison the Gulf with a toxic substance for the sole purpose of hiding their culpability.  Obama continues to allow this criminal corporation to continue dangerous and risky drilling in sensitive waters which the US gets most of its seafood, and not one person in BP has faced criminal charges for the deaths of 26 people at BP operations.

You're the walking bra!nde@d.

My point is that he didn't try for single payer.  He cut a deal that prevents any public option to control costs at least as long as his time in the White House.

Too late; I'm already started (on the 'donut hole'), I'm on a roll.

Obama traded away the single biggest costs' savings and bargaining chips for lowering pharmaceutical costs for Americans (on drugs that only exist because the American taxpayer subsidized their R&D on the proviso that We The People would wind up owning these drugs, i.e., getting them dirt cheap) when refused to allow the government to bargain on drug costs and reimportation.

These greedy b@stards (PhRma, Insurance industries) got windfalls from Republicans AND Democrats with the Medicare Reform Act of 2003.  Imagine their delight when in 2010, Democrats let it happen again.

ObamaCare is about forcing Americans to purchase 'junk insurance'. It does nothing to reign in the skyrocketing costs of healthcare. It's not healthcare for all. None of the loopholes discovered (surprise!) a day after its passage have been closed (it doesn't cover all children, it doesn't keep all under 26-year-olds on their parents' insurance, etc.).

With the deal that Obama made with phRma, hospitals & the AMA & Big Insurance, there can be no PublicOption as long as Obama's in the WhiteHouse. The only "start" about it is that it's the beginning of the end of all public healthcare programs (Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP, CHAMPUS, veterans' care, etc.).

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/27/preexisting-condition-ins_n_696061.html">Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan: 1,200 People Approved So Far

Just 1,200 people have been approved so far for a new program to provide insurance coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.
The program, known as the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan, launched in July as one of the immediate benefits of the new health care reform law, offering coverage to the uninsurable until 2014 when people should be able to choose from affordable policies available on an "exchange."
There are roughly four million people uninsured because of pre-existing conditions, and Democrats touted the new program as one of the best immediate provisions of health care reform. But the PCIP's administrators have said they expect it to reach only 350,000 over the next three years. The program is run by the federal government in 22 states and by the state government in the rest.
Kaiser Health News reported that 3,600 people have applied and about 1,200 have been approved for the PCIP. An obstacle is the program's steep premiums, which range from $140 to $900 depending on an applicant's age and location, and its requirement that people be uninsured for six months before applying (though the PCIP is still less expensive and more generous than existing high-risk pools operating in 35 states.)

Some Insurers Stop Writing New Coverage for Kids

Some major health insurance companies have stopped issuing certain types of policies for children, an unintended consequence of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul law, state officials said Friday.

There's a reason that Democrats aren't running on healthcare reform, but instead are having operatives like you plant seeds or memes inside threads like this, where they're unlike to face any kind of in-depth refuting.

One example right off the bat is Blanche Lincoln.

The White House put its full weight & support behind Blanche Lincoln over the true progressive (& union-backed) candidate in the primary, Bill Halter.

This wasn't unlike when Obama made a deal with Arlen Specter and put the full weight and support of the Democratic machine behind Specter during the 2010 primary in Pennsylvania, trying to buy off (among other alternative candidates Democratic voters in PA might have wanted to vote to have representing them) Joe Sestak.  Consider that -- Obama actively went about trying to prevent Democratic voters from choosing their preferred candidate for the US so that a DINO, Republican Arlen Specter, could retain the seat.

Blanche Lincoln is 40 points down behind the GOP candidate John Boozman.

Guess who could beat Boozman in Arkansas? BillHalter. Because, like just about all Americans, Arkansans would prefer an authentic, likable candidate, even if it's a progressive.

But more progressives in Congress means real populist legislation getting passed into law. Real reform bills, that re-regulate banks and big business. Real stimulus bills, with jobs creation, green clean energy development, and more.

But that's not who or what Obama and the DLC-controlled Democrats are about.

The right attacking Obama and their refusal to work in "a bipartisan manner" should have pushed Obama to play hardball and move populist legislation through Congress quickly and decisively.  To undo the Bush-Cheney abuses, especially with the tentative hold on a filibuster-proof majority Democrats were given in the 2008 election.

Instead, he let Republicans dictate the pace and shape a debate that was already done and voted on and won by Democrats in 2008.

Bush bashing?

Obama has thrown himself on the IED for Bush.  Not only is Obama blocking all investigations and prosecutions into the Bush administration, he's continuing just about all of Bush's policies (he's kept Bush's advisers and cabinet members, for pity's sake) and has made himself a co-conspirator in war crimes.

Obama's not trying to change course.  He disappeared from the healthcare debate last year to cut secret deals (which he then l!ed about) undercutting the committees in Congress working on healthcare reform.  There is no public option, no cost containment, because Obama blocked it.

This guy isn't who you think he is.

Obama's a DINO.  He and Rahm Emanuel and the DLC have worked overtime to make sure that real progressives don't get into office.

Republicans' policies are the same as Obama's and the DLC-Democrats' policies (which are the same or continuation of the Bush-Cheney policies).

Different names, different ad campaigns to spin them, but substantively the same.

Obama's healthcare 'reform' legislation (which does not do what voters put Obama and Democrats into power to get for them, namely affordable quality medical treatment for everyone) is Bush's Medicare Reform Act of 2003 (which was a $700 billion + giveaway to Big Insurance & PhRma).  Obama's legislation is Part 2.   It doesn't get affordable quality medical treatment for all,  in fact, it's a giant leap toward ending all public healthcare (Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP, CHAMPUS, veterans care, etc.).

Having insurance (which is all that Obama's legislation does, and not even for everyone, just for a few million more) doesn't mean getting necessary medical care or that you will be able to afford medical care.

Think about that for a minute, because I do understand how, after hours/days/months of spin by professional spinmeisters (politicians), you might not appreciate the distinction.

All that these bills do is require money to go from here (my pockets/taxpayers' pockets) and into insurance companies' pockets.

There is NO LIMITATION on insurance companies' charging and increasing co-pays and deductibles and eliminating services.

There is NO REQUIREMENT for insurance companies to have to provide services not paid for.

More people will be put into Medicaid, which states (which are currently going bankrupt) are required to co-pay along with the federal government. States are eliminating Medicaid services as a result. "Yes, you will fall into Medicaid, but Medicaid doesn't treat chit."

Obama's 'most ardent supporters' (like you) are the most immediate problem, as they help him screw them (& us) over.   They keep his personal numbers high.  That enables Obama to blow them (and all Democratic voters) off.  Until they wake up to these facts, they are their own (& our) worst e n e m ies, and the reason we don't get what we all thought we were voting for when we voted Obama and Democrats into office as the majority power in our government.

There are plenty of real Democrats who could and would run and win, were it not for the active sabotage by Obama, and other DINOs of the DLC.

Anyone who was alive 40 years ago, or who has parents and grandparents who were alive, remembers how much better life was before conservatives took over control of the government (conservatives in both the Republican and the Democratic parties).

Obama is a DINO.

During the 2008 campaign, Obama told people that they had to stay involved after the election, that they couldn't just vote for him, go away for four years and expect that he would do what they had hoped. He said that there were powerful interests working against what the people wanted, and if We The People wanted Obama to do our bidding, we would have to MAKE HIM DO IT.

Obama's 'most ardent supporters' forget that those of us who criticize Obama are only doing what he warned us needed to be done. NOT to trust him.

We heard then and we listen carefully now to ObamaSpeak.  It's essentially BushSpeak; deceptive rhetoric, focus-group tested and chosen words to lead supporters to believe he means one thing when he means something entirely different.

Whereas Bush needed a team of speechwriters and public relations handlers to do it, Obama can rely on his training as a lawyer to help him get through a press conference of 5 or 6 softball questions every few months.  It's the reason Obama speaks slowly and deliberately when he's off-teleprompter (which is rarely ever these days).  In case you didn't know, he even is using a teleprompter for meetings with corporate CEOs in the White House these days:

CHRIS MATTHEWS:  You know, sometimes, I really support the president in a lot of his views—in fact, all of them almost.  But I have to tell you, Michael, if he doesn‘t get rid of that teleprompter, it‘s like an eye test.  He‘s just reading words now.  It‘s separating him from us.  Your thoughts.  You go to a meeting with him, I‘m told.  Businessmen are invited to meet them at the White House, he hauls out the damn teleprompter.  And he reads it to them.  Well, why even bring people into the room, just have the teleprompter.  I sense it‘s getting between him and us.  And I thought the speech last night was a terrible, or a great example rather of him using the teleprompter instead of his heart and his mind.  He was reading words to us that any president could have written, had written for him and delivered.

Since the election (and even before, with his FISA vote), Obama's given us every reason to distrust and doubt him. He's been deceptive, breaking every campaign pledge and promise, conceding the positions of the left (getting nothing in return), and hobbling real Democrats at every turn while making Republicans and Blue Dogs stronger (and harder to beat in 2010 and 2012).

Fired U.S. Attorneys: Bush Administration 'Turned The Justice Department Into The Laughingstock Of The Country'

Let's move on, here, and let's decide if we want to immediately become serfs under Republicans, or continue a desperate battle to preserve our citizenship with democrats in office.

Not nice choices. As BP demonstrated recently, and as Goldman Sachs continues to demonstrate, not a nice world we live in.
==========================================

The American People have no real idea (nor obviously do you, from what you've said here this evening) of who is running the nation.  But keep watching reality TV.

Obama is as corrupt as Bush and Cheney.  He's continuing just about all of Bush's policies, and has gone Bush and Cheney one better in many instances.

Obama is Goldman Sachs' boy, having received more contributions from GS than any other candidate.  Same goes for BP.  Obama has let them destroy the Gulf of Mexico and the southwest coast of the US without fear of any prosecution.  Obama is letting BP continue dangerous and risky drilling operations in sensitive waters which the US relies on for food.

Your ig.no.rance is so shocking that I have to ask, "What are you smoking?"

Fired U.S. Attorneys: Bush Administration 'Turned The Justice Department Into The Laughingstock Of The Country'

Grant was not prosecuted by his successors after a clearly corrup administration, either. In fact American politics is replete with corrupt and possibly criminal behaviors in high office and almost none of them are ever prosecuted after the admin has left office.

===========================================

We shouldn't investigate or prosecute corruption in office again because a presidential administration 140 years ago wasn't prosecuted for corruption?

Are you freakin' kidding?

And it was Clinton, dearie, not Carter.  And yes, as I have written about extensively, here at HP and elsewhere.

There was nothing "arguable" about it.  And no, it's not the way "things are done".

Carter came into Washington with DC insiders sneering at the 'peanut farmer' and obstructing his efforts, just as Republicans are doing now to Obama.  And Carter tried compromising.  What Democrats don't get (and never have gotten, in spite of the fact that Republicans telegraph this to us often enough) is that "The opposition (whoever it is, whether it's foreign or domestic) doesn't respect reasonableness, compromise".

The Reagan and Bush campaign used what they saw as weakness and committed treason by secretly negotiating with Iran during the 1980 campaign.
