Obama Defends Offshore Drilling But Won't Say 'Drill Baby Drill'

Thursday, May 27, 2010

The White House had the live feed from the first day after the blow-out, and said nothing, did nothing, kept scientists and independent observers from the area as BP l!ed about the amount of oil and gas gushing into the Gulf.

Obama's Oil Spill Press Conference May Have Changed Perceptions -- But The Reality Remains The Same

"It may not be possible to fix this. What that means is that if it isn't fixed, that well will continue to gush until there's no more oil in it or the pressure gradients have matched up. It will take 9000 days (30 years) for this well to run dry, and waiting until August for the relief well to be drilled is too late to save the Gulf, the east coast of US and the N. What is it you want?

Did I criticize Kathleen Blanco for her actions after Katrina?

No.

Have I criticized Bobby Jindal, over his words and actions before the BP blow-out (or even after the blow-out)?

YES.

Just not over what you and the other id-jit (Fastwriter) think merits criticism.

Whether you agree with the Republicans' 'Less Government is Good' belief or not (and I don't), Jindal's complaint isn't hypocritical, isn't about wanting 'More Government'. It's about the roles set out for the state and the feds in a disaster like this in the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, and the plans each are to make and put into action when/if the time comes according to the law.

The building of berms to protect the barrier island is the responsibility of the federal government, and the costs fall to the feds, too, because the feds supercede the state's authority (and take the money, too) when it comes to all of those activities on the outer continental shelf (and even those on the inner -- oil drilling, ports, etc.).

Now this is a great example of "d@mned if I do and d@mned if I don't."

The one time (and I mean the ONE TIME) I do not throw in the kitchen sink and cover every conceivable retort I might get, the one time that I don't address every conceivable "but...but...but...." that someone reading the comment might dream up, the one time that I don't write reams which require me to keep refreshing the page to get the continuations under the correct reply, I get this.

Are you really unable to research on the internet, find and post what it is that you think I've been unfair about?

If it's YOUR belief that it's relevant, that it somehow exonerates Obama and would make him look good, do your own homework. Get off your f@t l@zy @$$ and make the argument for yourself.

I just wish he would do the job of the presidency, by having his Department of the Interior enforce the regulations they are charged with enforcing, and his EPA stop BP from making this catastrophe worse by using toxics and and further destroying the environment of the region (and the evidence at the crime scene).

Obama needs to perform his role as outlined in the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, which he is NOT doing.

What are these supertankers that have the ability to "siphon" oil off the surface of the water? Do you have a link to prove that these exist?

======================================

From today's press conference:

JAKE TAPPER: You say that everything that could be done is being done. But there are those in the region and those industry experts who say that's not true. Governor Jindal obviously had this proposal for a barrier. They say that if that had been approved when they first asked for it, they would have 10 miles up already. There are fishermen down there who want to work, who want to help, haven't been trained, haven't been told to go do so. There are industry experts who say that they're surprised that tankers haven't been sent out there to vacuum, as was done in '93 outside Saudi Arabia. And then, of course, there's the fact that there are 17 countries that have offered to help, and the -- it's only been accepted from two countries, Norway and Mexico. How can you say that everything that can be done is being done, with all these experts and all these officials saying that's not true?

Super tankers should have been (& still should be) moved into the Gulf to siphon up the oil. The only reason dispersants are used is to hide the oil, sink it beneath the surface from view of the media and the People.

All offers of help, both foreign and domestic, should have been accepted on day one, instead of turned down. Massive quantities of boom should have been sent to the region on day one, instead of waiting to see what might be needed. There still isn't enough.

Building berms around the barrier islands should have been authorized and expedited -- Not announced after being forced by this press conference to act.

All of the efforts to shut down the gusher should have been put into place and tried sequentially, immediately, after the initial blow-out. They shouldn't have been spending days building a top-hat (not an original idea, but one that had failed in a previous blow-out -- It was called "a sombrero"), seeing if it would work before starting on the next idea. Pumping mud/cement should have been initiated as soon as the blowout happened.

Obama needs to shut down all offshore oil rigs - Especially BP's Atlantic operation. That is NOT being done!

The Oil Pollution Act of 1990 requires oil companies to be FINANCIALLY responsible for the damage and repairs, but does NOT transfer require/transfer the responsibility for fixing the problem & clean-up to oil companies.

Dear Mike,

Obama came into office with the wind of populism at his back and blew all of the political capital the People bestowed upon him on a futile attempt at 'bipartisanship'. Obama conceded liberal positions on issues (not his to concede), while freezing out liberals from his administration and stacking the executive branch with DLCers (DINOs) and Republicans.

I don't care what the GOP would or wouldn't support. Democrats don't need Republicans to pass a d@mned thing, yet all we still keep hearing about is Obama and his desire for "bipartisanship". After all of the DLC-Democrats' concessions of leftist positions, not one Republican vote.

When are Obama's most ardent fans going to realize that their support of him works against their own (and all of our) best interests? Obama's not going to drop this BS until his fans MAKE HIM DO IT!

Obama and Democrats were put into power to do DIFFERENT than Bush & Cheney. To be more competent, honest, and populist. After 16 months in office, we're finding out Obama and DLC-Democrats are not any different than Bush-Cheney-Republicans.

Some smoking guns include this: After having issued a moratorium on the issuance of new drilling permits after this explosion, new drilling permits have been issued and for deeper sites than Deepwater Horizon. Obama's response (through Salazar before the Congress) to questions about these permits show how yet again, Obama's trying to deceive Congress, playing word games:

MMS is an executive branch agency, directed and controlled by the president.

Whether it happened under Bush's watch (and it did) no longer matters because Obama chose to block all investigations and prosecutions into that administration's activities.

By doing that, Obama (for all intents and purposes) was certifying that what went on wouldn't be going on, and that it was all now his responsibility. Obama would make it all better. It's been 16 months and what we're finding out is that Obama has continued Bush's policies throughout all of the government. It's not that he hasn't gotten to it yet -- He's rubber-stamped and is continuing what Bush and Cheney did.

All offshore drilling is dangerous, especially deepsea drilling, and all of these rigs have histories of problems.

You must be very angry with Obama for blocking all investigations and prosecutions into the Bush and Cheney administration.

Obama's been in office for 16 months, and has continued just about all of Bush's policies, and gone Bush and Cheney a few steps more in executive branch overreach, elimination of civil liberties like habeas corpus.

Obama has blocked all investigations and prosecutions into the Bush-Cheney administration.

It's not like he walked into the job not knowing that Bush and Cheney had planted Liberty University graduates in executive branch agencies. We all knew about it.

Obama and Democrats were put into power because they promised to clean up the mess. This particular mess falls right at Obama's feet.

The proof is that Obama has NOT shut down BP's other operations, like Atlantis, which is in worse shape than Deepwater Horizon. Obama's MMS keeps giving out drilling permits after Obama announced a suspension on permits.

Obama is allowing offshore oil drilling by BP and other oil companies with bad records to continue in the Gulf and other US waters.

BP's Atlantis platform (off the coast of Louisiana in "Hurricane Alley" at a water depth of more than 7,000 feet) poses a serious, immediate and potentially irreparable threat to the Gulf of Mexico's marine environment, oil workers and communities.

Atlantis operates with incomplete and inaccurate engineering documents, which one official warned could "lead to catastrophic operator error," much worse than BP's Deepwater Horizon rig, many times larger than the spill from the Horizon explosion:

"There is no evidence that some of the corrupt practices that had taken place earlier took place under the current administration's watch, but a culture in which oil companies were able to get what they wanted, without sufficient oversight and regulation, that was a real problem. Some of it was constraints of the law, as I just mentioned. But we should have busted through those constraints."

It's the 'culture' that's the "real problem", what's hard to "bust through".

And as you can see from Obama's most ardent supporters' responses to today's press conference, that 'culture' (apparently like yogurt, or drilling mud) has seeped into their brains, makes them into Obamazombies, for they buy his explanations, his excuses.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well -- well, let -- let me just make the point that I made earlier, which is, Salazar came in and started cleaning house, but the culture had not fully changed in MMS. And absolutely, I take responsibility for that. There -- there wasn't sufficient urgency in terms of the pace of how those changes needed to take place.

There is no evidence that some of the corrupt practices that had taken place earlier took place under the current administration's watch, but a culture in which oil companies were able to get what they wanted, without sufficient oversight and regulation, that was a real problem. Some of it was constraints of the law, as I just mentioned. But we should have busted through those constraints.

Now, with respect to Ms. Birnbaum, I found out about her resignation today. Ken Salazar had been in testimony throughout the day, so I don't know the circumstances in which this occurred.

I can tell you what I've said to Ken Salazar, which is that we have to make sure, if we are going forward with domestic oil production, that the federal agency charged with overseeing its safety and security is operating at the highest level. And I want people in there who are operating at the highest level, and aren't making excuses when things break down, but are intent on fixing them. And I am confident that Ken Salazar can do that.

Q And his job is (safe ?)?

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Yes.

Q Elizabeth Birnbaum resigned today. Did she resign? Was she fired? Was she forced out? And if so, why? And should other heads roll as we go on here?

Secondly with regard to the Minerals Management Service, Secretary Salazar yesterday basically blamed the Bush administration for the cozy relationship there.

And you seemed to suggest that when you spoke in the Rose Garden a few weeks ago when you said, for too long, a decade or more -- most of those years, of course, the Bush administration -- there's been a cozy relationship between the oil companies and federal agency that permits them to drill.

But you knew as soon as you came in, and Secretary Salazar did, about this cozy relationship. But you continued to give permits -- some of them under questionable circumstances. Is it fair to blame the Bush administration? Don't you deserve some of that?

From today's press conference -

"And that's why, when I went to the Republican caucus just this week, I said to them, let's work together. You've got Lieberman and Kerry -- who previously were working with Lindsey Graham, even though Lindsey's not on the bill right now -- coming up with a framework that has the potential to get bipartisan support and says, yes, we're going to still need oil production"

The Obama-Kerry-Lieberman-Graham energy bill is heavy on dirty sources of power -- coal, nuclear, oil. It's BIG on nuclear and the same arguments for offshore drilling, that it could be done safely with no chance for accidents, are made for nuclear and it's a l!e.

The fact is that there is a nuclear event-accident almost daily somewhere around the world.

The line Obama uses, that he's committed more money to green renewable energy than any other previous administration, is no big deal, considering that previous presidents' committments have been $0.

Obama's committed $80 billion to green renewable energy, and that's nothing. It's not even going to lay a grid, an infrastructure. It's nothing for future administrations to build on.

Wind, solar, hydro and conservation is the solution and it can serve all of our energy needs.

Now if we only had political leaders with the will and the integrity to make it happen. That will only come when the People cast these current corrupt politicians out.

Today, the Persian Gulf has been cleaned up and even the sensitive marshlands are return to health. BUT, it has taken nearly 20 years. We will probably do better.

====================================

Total BS.

The Persian Gulf was never "restored" to anything remotely healthy. Subsequent, continuing assaults have destroyed species & habitat.

More than one million barrels of oil are spilled into the Persian Gulf annually; up to 30% of sewage discharged into the sea is untreated; low levels of pollutants including pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organic phosphorous compounds have been found in marine organisms & biota; heavy metals such as mercury, copper and nickel are relatively high near the outfalls of desalination and power plants; and studies report elevated concentrations of cadmium, chromium, copper, arsenic, lead, nickel, vanadium, zinc and petroleum hydrocarbons in the sediments, fish tissue & water column.

As a result, the integrity of the Gulf terrestrial ecosystems faces various challenges such as loss of biodiversity of fauna & flora, soil degradation, sediment and nutrient loss, a sharp decline in plant life, invasive species and overgrazing. Persistent contaminants may also be incorporated into the food chain, affecting human health.

I am an old liberal Democrat, and it's Democrats like you who are polluting the discussion, with your ig.no.rance of the laws governing this disaster, how the federal government is required to respond & how the state government is prohibited from responding by law, and precisely what it is that Jindal is talking about.

It's about how Jindal's hands, as an officer of the state, are tied by the feds, and how the feds are then NOT doing what only the feds can do by the law.

Jindal, according to Obama, made the request of the feds PER LAW, for the creation of the berms to protect the barrier islands and Obama "studied the matter and denied the request".

Republicans are for states' rights, and there is nothing that Republican Governor Bobby Jindal is saying that contradicts the Republican position.

There is plenty to go after Republicans for, but comments like yours are a distraction from the fact that we have a national crisis occurring and a Democratic president who might as well be a Republican given priorities and his inept handling of this catastrophe.
