Duke Energy Leading Fundraising Charge For DNC Convention In 2012

Chris Hedges, one of the most interesting, thoughtful, intelligent (in addition to being well educated), complex journalists in our history.  'War Is A Force That Gives Us Meaning' (which should be required reading in every high school, before any young American is of age to join the military or vote) is but one of several of Hedges's books.

Power and the Tiny Acts of Rebellion

A few days ago, Hedges wrote this.  Hedges was validated within a couple of days when this happened, on air, for all to see and hear:

"The human toll here looks to be much worse than the economic toll, and we can be grateful for that."

After hearing reports today that Obama is not deterred by the events taking place at Japan's nuclear power plants and is moving full speed ahead with plans to license and build more plants in the US, I think Power and the Tiny Acts of Rebellion by Chris Hedges may be the most important read of our time.

Japan Earthquake 2011: Before/After Satellite Images Show Extent Of Devastation (PHOTOS)

"As food and water shortages expand across the globe, as mounting poverty and misery trigger street protests in the Middle East, Africa and Europe, the elites do what all elites do. They launch more wars, build grander monuments to themselves, plunge their nations deeper into debt, and as it all unravels they take it out on the backs of workers and the poor. The collapse of the global economy, which wiped out a staggering $40 trillion in wealth, was caused when our elites, after destroying our manufacturing base, sold massive quantities of fraudulent mortgage-backed securities to pension funds, small investors, banks, universities, state and foreign governments and shareholders. The elites, to cover the losses, then looted the public treasury to begin the speculation over again. They also, in the name of austerity, began dismantling basic social services, set out to break the last vestiges of unions, slashed jobs, froze wages, threw millions of people out of their homes, and stood by idly as we created a permanent underclass of unemployed and underemployed.

[...]

Globalization is the modern articulation of the ancient ideology used by past elites to turn citizens into serfs and the natural world into a wasteland for profit. Nothing to these elites is sacred. Human beings and the natural world are exploited until exhaustion or collapse. The elites make no pretense of defending the common good. It is, in short, the defeat of rational thought and the death of humanism.

The march toward self-annihilation has already obliterated 90 percent of the large fish in the oceans and wiped out half of the mature tropical forests, the lungs of the planet. At this rate by 2030 only 10 percent of the Earth’s tropical forests will remain. Contaminated water kills 25,000 people every day around the globe, and each year some 20 million children are impaired by malnourishment. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is now above the 350 parts per million that most climate scientists warn is the maximum level for sustaining life as we know it. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates that the measurement could reach 541 to 970 ppm by 2100. At that point huge parts of the planet, beset with overpopulation, droughts, soil erosion, freak storms, massive crop failures and rising sea levels, will be unfit for human existence."

After hearing reports today that Obama is not deterred by the events taking place at Japan's nuclear power plants and is moving full speed ahead with plans to license and build more plants in the US, I think it may be the most important read of our time.

Desperately Seeking Their Own Rove: Democrats Try Catching GOP In Outside Money Chase

[,,,]

-Chris Hedges*, disillusioned elitest

"The human toll here looks to be much worse than the economic toll, and we can be grateful for that."

 -Larry Kudlow, elite

Japan Nuclear Plant Rocked By Second Blast, Nuclear Rods Likely Melting

# 1, I think that families with substantial assets would likely relocate to other areas in Japan, and the people who have been completely wiped out are the most likely to end up as disaster refugees to other nations.

# 2, "under their futons"... like all the "sushi" and "godzilla" jokes appearing on these threads, is tacky and insensitive. They do have banks in Japan, just like we do.

============================================

There's nothing remotely offensive about my translating common American imagery into a Japanese equivalent.

But you're going to lecture me on cultural stereotypes for a figure of speech after you've expressed sheer ig.no.rance of the Japanese people, their average wealth and sophistication of the Japanese?

Before this latest catastrophe, adequate housing was at a premium in Japan and hard to come by.  Just importing the materials alone necessary to rebuild after clearing away is going to be a nightmare.  And then there's the danger of radioactive lands (which won't be habitable for hundreds, if not thousands of years).

Desperately Seeking Their Own Rove: Democrats Try Catching GOP In Outside Money Chase

Democratic voters have mistakenly believed that Obama and Democrats want what they want. The DLC-controlled Democratic Party gives lip service to all populist issues (like civil rights protections, restoring habeas corpus, ending the wars, public healthcare, Wall Street reform, environmental & energy issues, etc.).

If the Bush years taught us anything, it's that anyone can sell anything to Americans, if you're stolid and relentless in your sales pitch and tactics. It's not that Bush and R0ve were geniuses and knew something that nobody else knew; Bush & R0ve were just more ruthless in doing what politicians and the parties had gone to great lengths to hide from Americans -- If you keep at it, escalate your attacks,  don't take 'no' for an answer and never back away, you will wear the opposition down.

Obama didn't get to be the first black president, vanquish the Clinton machine (to get the Democratic Party's nomination) and the oldest, most experienced politicians in US history (including the R0ve machine) by not having mastered these skills. Nor do Democratic politicians (more incumbents than ever, in office longer) not know how to do it. How do you think Democrats managed to keep impeaching Bush and Cheney off the table, have us still reelecting them and not marching on Washington with torches and pitchforks?

Obama and Democrats know how to do it -- They don't want to do it.

The trick for them has been to keep the many different populist groups believing that they really do support our issues, but they're merely inept. And to get us to keep voting for them despite their failure to achieve our alleged shared objectives.

Getting Democratic voters (and Obama's 'most ardent supporters') to understand that Democratic politicians have been taking us all for suckers and patsies is the most immediate problem and the challenge.

I suspect that there will be a large migration of Japanese to the US as a result of the unimaginable effort necessary to rebuild.  This may solve our real estate problems, where homes are standing empty across the nation, but specifically in California and Florida.

Obama Pledge To Improve Transparency Sees Little Progress

Obama in his own words:

"Transparency Will Be Touchstone"

"On transparency", "About inviting the people back into their government again", and "Part of the job of the next American president is making Americans believe that our government is working for them, because right now they don't feel like it's working for them. They feel like it's working for special interests and it's working for corporations"

"We need a president who sees the government not as a tool to enrich well connected friends and high-priced lobbyists, but as a defender of fairness and opportunity for every single American. That's what this country's been about and that's the kind of president I intend to be"

"Meetings where laws are written will be more open to the public, no more secrecy.....No more secrecy....."

A Failure Of Leadership, Or Just A Betrayal? - Obama, The Democratic Party, ACA, Single Payer, Public Option, Liberal/Progressive Policies

It doesn't matter how much greater the majority was or is -- Obama had enough to accomplish the goals that he and Democratic politicians were put into office to achieve and he refused to.  He didn't even need 60 to pass healthcare with a public option -- He passed his insurance and pharmaceutical grand giveaway through reconciliation.

Obama and Democrats fight when they want to, when it comes to an issue or keeping an office that they want.  When Democrats needed to extend unemployment benefits and Jim Bunning threatened to filibuster if it came to the floor of the Senate, Harry Reid called the GOP's bluff (after 2 previous times that Reid caved to the threat); Bunning, Mitch McConnell and Republicans in the Senate folded and unemployment benefits were extended.

The same could have been done with the DISCLOSE Act (forcing a filibuster), although "disclosing" isn't the problem -- Private money in our public elections is the problem.

Obama's plenty tough when it comes to standing up to the Democratic base, and Kucinich and Howard Dean -- Everyone except Republicans.

Just to show you where Obama's and the DLC's real heart lies, there are so many things he and the DLC/DNC could have done, could be doing, to get real Democratic legislation through, but don't.

Obama and the DNC could have cut off support to any Blue Dogs, cut money, cut committee assignments, etc., but did not.

There is plenty that a President and a Speaker of the House and a Senate Majority Leader can do to pressure representatives and senators into voting as you want them to vote.  We saw that Obama had no problem doing it when he wanted and needed Blue Dogs like Ben Nelson and Mary Landrieu's votes -- He literally bought them.

There is nothing that the Blue Dogs are doing that Obama and the DLC doesn't want them to do.

Before the midterms of 2010, I asked, facetiously, if Obama's 'most ardent supporters ' believed that if Democrats lost control of Congress, would Democratic politicians be as effective at preventing the Republicans' agenda from moving forward as Republicans have been at stymieing Democrats.  After all, there would still be more numbers of Democrats in Congress AND a Democratic White House.

Not one of Obama's 'most ardent fans' replied.

And after the 2010 midterms, Obama had the audacity to say that voters wanted Republican policies, and more caving to the right.

Desperately Seeking Their Own Rove: Democrats Try Catching GOP In Outside Money Chase

The key solution to our broken system (campaign finance and election reform) isn't on Democrats' agenda and won't be.

Any party that doesn't have that as their first order of business (particularly after the Citizens United decision and the overwhelming public support for reform) is d!rty, r0tten and corrupt to the bone.

I'm an old, lifelong Democrat saying that.  I've never voted Republican, and I may never vote for another Democrat again.  But I think it's too late for that, for this "noble experiment" (continuing the US as we've known it and as it was intended (a democratic republic) by the framers.

The US Constitution is no longer the basis for and the functional law of the land.  The US Constitution is no longer much respected in Congress, the Executive Branch, the Supreme Court nor in law or business. That  might have been remedied had Obama come into office investigating and prosecuting the Bush administration and restoring the 'rule of law'.  Bush and Cheney exploited the inherent weaknesses in the Constitution:  The precarious balance of power between the three branches of government.  But Obama refused, and has continued the Bush-Cheney disregard of the Constitution and even gone beyond Bush-Cheney abuses.

As president, you've got to really want the US to work, to exist, to not exploit the loopholes in the Constitution that keep our three-branches of government precariously balancing the democracy.  But Bush-Cheney drove tanks through the loopholes, breaking the law and with no apparent concern for exposing the loopholes or any consequences.

That fact alone casts suspicion on Obama's good intentions after his failure to investigate and prosecute and his continuing Bush's 'unitary executive' practices (and expanding them, with "indefinite preventive detention" of American citizens and the k!IIing of Americans with no due process or oversight).

There was a coup d'etat in this nation, a bloodless one, but a coup nonetheless.  And both parties are in on it.

Obama Administration To Hold Gun Policy Meetings With Goal Of Introducing Legislation

How you can tell that Obama and Congress are moving ahead with plans to expand nuclear in the US in spite of what's happening in Japan?
