Obama Demeans His Own Supporters

Saturday, September 18, 2010

I wish Obama was actually doing what he got elected to do, although my opinion on that is somewhere between a belief that there are powerful people in place that don't allow him to (on one hand) or he has changed since he got into office (which is certainly not hard to believe).

Claiming it's the GOP's fault doesn't wash with me (or many others).

And he's adopting GOP policies and no one even criticizes him for that.

So I can only criticize him for the things he promised that he has switched gears about, esp when it comes to war. That is deeply disturbing to me.

==================================================

In the early days of this administration, after Obama ended "Cocktail Wednesdays at the White House" shortly after its inception (and when reports that it actually was working to bring Democrats and Republicans closer together), I mused aloud how I hadn't seen Mrs. Robinson (Michelle's mother) since immediately after the inauguration.  And perhaps Cheney had renditioned her to an "undisclosed location" for the duration of Obama's term in office.

I have looked high and low and everywhere in between for one scrap, a crumb of leftward consideration.  Anything that would indicate he's not a Republican (forget about liberal Democrat).

Every single action, every one of them, indicates both at the time and then later turns out to confirm that this is a Republican administration imposing conservative, pro-corporate, pro-war, anti-civil rights, policies and legislation.

Coming into office with a mix of positions on issues, some liberal and some conservative, could be (and is) reasonable.  But the odds that he (or anyone) would switch gears on only those positions he had which were liberal just doesn't cut it.  That is a red flag of a deceitful man.

His accomplished are contrived, spun.  They're Republican.

You can't keep claiming that his healthcare and finance legislation are anything but pro-corporate massive boons to corporations, Republican-like bills, without exposing yourself as ig.no.rant.

More important than this; however, would be how committed are the Ds to anything beyond getting reelected?
=========================================

You hit the nail on the head.

Just look at Lieberman's (and now Murkowski's) tenacious grip on the Senate.

Democratic voters have mistakenly believed that Obama&Democrats want what they want. The DLC-controlled DemocraticParty gives lip service to all populist issues (like civil rights protections, restoring habeas corpus, ending the wars, PublicHealthcare, WallStreet reform, environmental & energy issues, etc.).

If the Bush years taught us nothing else, it's that anyone can sell anything to Americans, if you're stolid & relentless in your sales pitch & tactics. It's not that Bush&R0ve were geniuses & knew something that nobody else knew; Bush&R0ve were just more ruthless (clumsy & careless many political graybeards would say) in doing what politicians & the parties had gone to great lengths to hide from Americans.

Obama didn't get to be the first black president, vanquish the Clinton machine (to get the nomination) & the oldest, most experienced politicians in our nation's history (including the Rove machine) by not having mastered these skills. Nor do Democratic politicians (more incumbents than ever, in office longer) not know how to do it. How do you think Democrats managed to keep impeaching Bush&Cheney off the table & have us still reelecting them, not marching on Washington with torches&pitchforks?

Obama&Democrats know how to do it -- They don't want to do it.

The trick for them has been to keep the many different populist groups believing that they really do support our issues, but they're merely inept. And to get us to keep voting for them despite their failure to deliver on any of our alleged shared objectives.

Obama has a habit and a practice of kneecapping liberal Democrats and sabotaging Democratic policies, all the while looking 'innocent by being incompetent or out-manuveured by Republicans'.

Which is it?  And is that the person we want leading the charge?  An incompetent or a corporate plant?

If that happens, we have Obama to thank/blame.

During the Bush years, Democrats said if the People wanted change, they had to put Democrats in the majority in Congress. So in 2006, we did. Nothing changed.

Democrats said, "You have to give us more Democrats -- 60 in the Senate". In 2008, we gave them the 60. And the White House.

Obama came into office with the wind at his back. More people voted for him, a black man in America, than ever in the history of the US. They did it because of his ability to persuade that he was going to change the system, end the corporatocracy, lobbyism in government -- He was going to be the People's president, not a corporate t00I.

And no sooner did Obama get elected than he slammed the brakes on the momentum of his election & a filibuster-proof Senate (tentative yet, with 2 senators, Kennedy & Byrd, at d.e.a.t.h's door, Obama did a 180-degree turn on his promises & sloooooowed everything down. To "work in a bipartisan manner with Republicans", after Republicans had already announced they were going to block everything Democrats wanted to do, and vote no on everything, in lockstep.

Since Obama has gotten into office, he's continued most of Bush's policies & his 'accomplishments' are being spun as "reform" when, in fact, they're Republican in nature.

There could be 100 "progressives" in the Senate & 435 in the House, & they & Obama would still find a way to deliver to corporations instead of the People.

And stop putting the cart before the horse, in this case, stop looking for what his motive might be.

Whatever his motive, it's irrelevant.

Is that really how you decide what's in your best interests?  By what isn't in someone else's?

What you're admitting is that you don't understand the issues, the legislation, and in that case you really shouldn't be voting.

I think you should go back and revisit, listen to, Candidate Obama's speeches, the debates, and interviews, with a now 'experienced'-ear.  Use the same ear that got developed from years of Bush-speak, of compound words and phrases that were crafted by high-priced and sophisticated pr0paganda artists (public relations firms and political operatives).  Better yet read his speeches, (transcripts of) the debates, the interviews.  You won't get so easily distracted by what is his very disarming style and charm.

I used to say that Obama is able to do what Bush required a team of speechwriters to do, but I've been informed lately that that apparently may not be true:

CHRIS MATTHEWS:  You know, sometimes, I really support the president in a lot of his views—in fact, all of them almost.  But I have to tell you, Michael, if he doesn‘t get rid of that teleprompter, it‘s like an eye test.  He‘s just reading words now.  It‘s separating him from us.  Your thoughts.  You go to a meeting with him, I‘m told.  Businessmen are invited to meet them at the White House, he hauls out the damn teleprompter.  And he reads it to them.  Well, why even bring people into the room, just have the teleprompter.  I sense it‘s getting between him and us.  And I thought the speech last night was a terrible, or a great example rather of him using the teleprompter instead of his heart and his mind.  He was reading words to us that any president could have written, had written for him and delivered.

Now that it's being brought to your attention, think about it.

To what end would Obama want to "work together with Republicans"?  For what purpose?

To solve the nation's problems or to pass legislation?

Let's say he wants to solve the nation's problems, would any way do?

Democrats and Republicans ran on very different ways to fix the nation's problems, and Democrats won.

In our democratic system, winner chooses.  We sure heard that often enough during the Bush/GOP-controlledCongress years.  And from Democrats' mouths, because Democrats were anticipating the day when they would control Congress and the White House.

If Obama meant getting any legislation passed, how committed then is Obama to Democratic ideology and policies that got Democrats elected as the majority party in both Houses of Congress and the White House?  (We see now, not at all.)

He ALWAYS said he wanted to work together with the Republicans. Always. If you didn't hear that, you weren't listening.
=====================================

When you heard that he "wanted to work together with Republicans", how did you imagine that would work?

The old, experienced politically active among us knew it was a BS line, meaningless political rhetoric, aimed at getting Republican crossover voters and Centrist voters, who tend to be uncomfortable with conflict, just want us all to get along but haven't a clue about how that happens and haven't given the 'how' of it much consideration.

Republicans never made any secret of their intention to obstruct a Democratic Congress. It's what they were doing since Democrats took over control of Congress in 2006.

Obama's rhetoric on 'bipartisanship' was along the lines of, "Vote for me if you want to break the gridlock in Congress because Hillary's too polarizing; I've worked with Dick Lugar on bill to stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons."

What did you presume from that?  That Republicans would cross over and vote with Democrats because Obama has a great smile/smart/reasonable/silver-tongued/blahblahblah?

Did you think that Obama and Democrats were put into power to cave on their platforms and policies, and vote for Republican-like legislation?

Obama, RahmEmanuel, the DLC, DavidAxelrod, DavidPlouffe, all have worked their @$$es off to prevent real progressives getting into office.

One example right off the bat is BlancheLincoln.

The White House put their full weight & support behind Blanche Lincoln over the true progressive (& union-backed) candidate in the primary, Bill Halter.

Lincoln is 40 points down behind the GOP candidate John Boozman.

Guess who could beat Boozman in Arkansas? BillHalter. Because, like just about all Americans, Arkansans would prefer an authentic, likable candidate, even if it's a progressive.

But more progressives in Congress means real populist legislation getting passed into law. Real reform bills, that re-regulate banks and big business. Real stimulus bills, with jobs creation, green clean energy development, and more.

But that's not who or what Obama and the DLC-controlled Democrats are about.

Obama never pressured JoeLieberman, Ben Nelson or Blanche Lincoln, or any Blue Dog. That's by their own admission. The Democratic leadership could've taken away committee chairs of members in their caucus that joined with Republicans and threatened to filibuster a public option for healthcare.

The DNC could've taken away reelection funds. But it hasn't. Because Lieberman & Blue Dogs (& Republicans) provide cover to Obama & the DLC-controlled Democratic Party, to let them continue to serve corporate interests over the interests of the People.

There is nothing that Democrats in Congress are doing that Obama hasn't signed off on, much less ordered.

When you are the president, you are the head of your political party. When your political party controls both Houses of Congress and the White House, you do what the head of your party tells you to do. The only people who don't understand this are those who have never worked in politics or in government.

Democrats like to hide this from the people, and lend the illusion of democracy (small 'd'), like "herding cats", "no organized party", etc., but that's how it is, and it's the only reason there are political parties.

If you do not get behind what the leader of your political party tells you to do, you're going to find your life really cold and lonely for the duration of your term in office. Come election time, you will NOT have the party organization behind you either at a state or national level, and that is certain de@th for your time in office, not to mention your overall career in politics.

The teabaggers aren't the problem.  Yes, they're abzurd, yes, their beliefs and ideas are way out of mainstream, fringe, whackadoodle, but they're clowns.

Stand back and look at the bigger picture.

And that's their purpose.

There are leftwing grassroots movements, active and protesting Obama and the DLC-controlled Democrats in Congress, all across the country.

Last year, Obama disappeared from the healthcare debate as the Tea Party grew & bullied at Town Halls. The Tea Party has always been a myth, & a myth that Obama & Rahm Emanuel have helped to create. In all of the US, there are 600 registered members of the Tea Party.

What Obama's doing is a variation of the old Bush-R0ve 'fear' tactic. Only instead of terr0rists with kn!ves between their teeth climbing over border walls between Mexico & Arizona/Texas/California, it's gvn-toting John Birchers at Town Hall meetings.

All of last summer, as they brought gvns to the Town Halls, & members of Congress were canceling Town Halls, did Obama take charge, send out federal marshals to protect the democratic process? Did Obama hit the air waves, saying, "There will be gathering in the public square to do what we do in America: Debate and discuss the issues facing us!"?

No.

What Obama did instead during the same time period was unleash federal security forces to Pittsburgh to break up peaceful protests of the G20 meeting. Tested out the new weaponry - http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/blog/2009/sep/25/sonic-cannon-g20-pittsburgh

Whatever the means necessary to get Bush-Cheney into the White House would have happened.  Had Nader been in the race, not in the race, whatever.

If the means to getting Bush-Cheney into office required a close election and Nader not been running, some other means would have been used.

For pity's sake, the CIA was working on GOP absentee ballots in the weeks leading up to election day in Florida.

Do people forget all the different ways that this election was gamed by the GOP?  And that's just in Florida.  And just the ways that we learned about because of legal proceedings in the post-election days.

Your voting for Nader didn't put Bush into the White House.

Al Gore won.  Gore got more votes in Florida.  Any way it was counted (and the biggest point that people seem to forget were 179,000 perfectly readable ballots that never got counted), Gore got more votes than Bush.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/theguardian/2006/jul/14/guardianweekly.guardianweekly1

That was a stolen election.

Had Nader not run the outcome would have been the same.  The powers that be were not going to let Gore win, no matter what, and gamed it innumerable ways.

There was a coup d'etat in this country in 2000.  A bIoodless coup, but a coup nonetheless.

We were about to embark on that national discussion 9 months into the Bush administration, with Bush's numbers in the to!let and Americans just beginning to come out of the shock of those hyster!cal post-election days in Florida.  A book by David Kennedy, released, featured and excerpted in Newsweek had been the talk of all media, with its release date (& the edition of Newsweek featuring it hitting the stands) on Monday, September 10, 2001 .

By Wednesday, September 12th, all copies had been removed from the stands nationwide, replaced with this: http://cdn2.ioffer.com/img/item/137/166/197/RKvikIQRzgOhd8G.jpg

If you want more of the same, more Republican-like policies and legislation, keep voting for Obama and DLC-controlled politicians.

What we have seen to date, the first (almost) two years of Obama's administration is the most liberal of what he intends to do.  He's not catering to the left.  He's going for Republicans (politicians and their supporters).  He's moved and is moving the Democratic Party even farther to the right, in order to attract those Republicans who are being pushed out of the Republican Party by Teabaggers.

That's been the plan of the DLC (DINOs who are controlling the Democratic Party) for years.

Why do you suppose that Obama and Rahm Emanuel went after Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin as soon as Obama got into the Oval Office? In spite of the fact that Limbaugh & Palin have no role in the RepublicanParty. Obama and RahmEmanuel have never gone after the Republican leadership directly. Not MitchMcConnell, not JohnBoehner, not EricCantor, not JohnMcCain (the titular head of the Party, as the last presidential nominee).

Obama and Rahm Emanuel won't go after Bush, Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, Feith, Wolfowitz, Yoo, Bybee, et al, or anyone in the Republican leadership or in Congress, but instead they go after Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin (two people with no official role in the Republican Party).

Why hasn't Obama (nor any of the Democratic Party leadership) held the Bush administration to account?

It would be kind of hard to swallow (Obama going after an administration for having committed crimes) when it's the same activities that Obama's actively engaged in.  It's also counter-intuitive to your other agenda, which is to attract Republican politicians and their supporters into the Democratic Party, which can only be done by moving the Democratic Party to the right of right-of-center.

Obama Demeans His Own Supporters

Politifact has gamed its way of measuring Obama's "promise-keeping"; its categories ('NO ACTION', 'IN THE WORKS', 'STALLED' or 'NOT YET RATED) are misleading. Many a campaign promise or pledge (hundreds of them) has been generously placed in these categories to languish so that Politifact can cut Obama much slack by only recognizing 22 broken promises.

As Politifact claims, "Once we find action is completed, we rate them 'PROMISE KEPT' 'COMPROMISE' or 'PROMISE BROKEN'". By Politifact's own definition, it enables Obama to keep these issues in limbo for 4 years.

One of many examples of Politifact's gaming its list is that Politifact doesn't even list in its "Promises Broken" category Obama's campaign promise to impose 'Windfall Profits Taxes on the Oil & Gas Industry" - Obama immediately reneged on that promise once in office, saying, "The prices have now dropped - We'll see about doing that if or when they rise again." Oil hit over $80/barrel (the amount that, had Obama kept his promise, the windfall profits tax would have been triggered) months ago. Politifact has conveniently ignored this issue.

Another duped by politifact.com

Between Ar!anna, me and others, Politifact has been discredited a source for accurate, unbiased assessment.  Politifact has gotten it wrong on Obama's "accomplishments', his promise-keeping, on Halliburton, on war contracting, on Nita Lowey, on the Stupak Amendment, on the healthcare legislation, and more:

Obama Demeans His Own Supporters

Obama's comments have an uncanny ring to them.  They're very similar to that speech Bush gave to the political elites (Alfred E. Smith memorial dinner),  where Bush gazed around the diamond-studded $800-a-plate crowd and commented on the wealth on display:

"This is an impressive crowd - the haves and the have-mores.  Some people call you the elites; I call you my base."

Obama Demeans His Own Supporters

You're getting Republican policies branded with a 'D' across the top.

That's your "half a loaf".

You might as well have voted for McCain with the kind of governing you're settling for.

Obama Demeans His Own Supporters

So much for Obama's doing the will of those who put him and Democrats into power.

During the 2008 campaign, Obama told people that they had to stay involved after the election, that they couldn't just vote for him, go away for four years and expect that he would do what they had hoped. He said that there were powerful interests working against what the people wanted, and if We The People wanted Obama to do our bidding, we would have to MAKE HIM DO IT.

Obama's 'most ardent supporters' forget that those of us who criticize Obama are only doing what he warned us needed to be done. NOT to trust him.

Since the election (and even before, with his FISA vote), Obama's given us every reason to distrust and doubt him. He's been deceptive, breaking every campaign pledge and promise, conceding the positions of the left (getting nothing in return), and hobbling real Democrats at every turn while making Republicans and Blue Dogs stronger (and harder to beat in 2010 and 2012).

Obama's 'most ardent supporters' are the most immediate problem, as they help him screw them (& us) over.   They keep his personal numbers high.  That enables Obama to blow them (and all Democratic voters) off.  Until they wake up to these facts, they are their own (& our) worst e n e m ies, and the reason we don't get what we all thought we were voting for when we voted Obama and Democrats into office as the majority power in our government.

Obama Demeans His Own Supporters

Lisa Murkowski Write-In Bid Decision: Alaska Senator Announces Run [UPDATE]

When people don't play by the rules or ethical intent (and those with the power don't enforce the rules or ethics), what happens?:

Ford pardoned Nixon at the urging of Cheney & Rumsfeld (Ford's Chiefs of Staff and Nixon administration alums).
http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/node/39932

Read
how Cheney & Rumsfeld isolated and controlled Ford -
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/personal-view/3609608/Dont-let-them-send-you-to-Nebraska.html>

That pardon effectively set the table for an energy infrastructure dependent on foreign oil, Iran-contra, Reagan, Bush, R0ve, Cheney, Rumsfeld, 9/11, extreme climate change, environmental catastrophe, perpetual wars in the Middle East, a decimated middle class and third world nation status for the US.

Clinton refused to investigate and prosecute Reagan-Bush (Iran-contra) and Congress buried the crimes before the full extent of the crimes (and the discovery of more crimes) could lead to having to impeach Reagan -
http://www.consortiumnews.com/2010/091710.html

That
refusal continued the US on a course to squeeze every last cent from the poor & middle (and even the rich) classes, to make uber-rich even ubier.

That refusal by Clinton & Congress enabled the same people from the Nixon administration, this time fronted by Bush the son and with Cheney as regent, to take a nation to war based on I!es, to commit war crimes, and to commit the greatest heist on the People in the history of civilization.

Which that Congress then refused to prosecute, and which Obama and this Congress refuse to investigate (much less prosecute).  Instead, this president and Congress continue the same policies as the previous administration(s).

What are We The People to do?

Is there any doubt that we will see them in power again, in our lifetime, tanned, rested, more effective and more dangerous than ever.   In some form or other, perhaps as another (Jeb) Bush-Cheney (Liz) ticket, or another DINO, another first: (Chelsea) Clinton-Obama (Sasha) ticket.  Hedge funds meet Bryant Park.

Lisa Murkowski Write-In Bid Decision: Alaska Senator Announces Run [UPDATE]

This is no different than when Joe Lieberman ran as an Independent in 2006.  Democratic Senators and the Democratic machine publicly supported Lieberman while working behind-the-scenes to help him raise money to beat out the Democratic candidate, Ned Lamont, and Republican Alan Schlesinger.

If Murkowski wins, she'll caucus with Republicans just as Lieberman is caucusing with Democrats*.

[*For all his treachery before 2006, Lieberman was rewarded with retaining seniority within the Democratic caucus, getting committee and sub-committee chairmanships, etc., and retaining it all after the 2008 election after endorsing and campaigning for John McCain!]

Bush and Cheney did what they did through exploiting loopholes in the Constitution.  The very few (but powerful) tools and mechanisms that exist to keep one branch of government from exploiting those loopholes weren't used to keep the executive branch in balance with the other two.

This is what happens when that happens.  This is what happens when government officials aren't held to account; the problem invades all branches and grows and gets worse.  "If the executive branch can do it and get away with it, why can't the legislative branch (or political parties, or candidates in those parties, or candidates period) do it?"

Our government is irretrievably broken, throughout all branches.  And broken limbs go untreated, at best they heal twisted.  At worst, sepsis sets in.

John Cornyn Warns Lisa Murkowski She Could Lose Leadership Role If She Stays In Senate Race

They surely can and they do. Murkowski's running a write-in campaign as a Republican. But that wasn't my point. If she wins, she'll caucus with Republicans just as Lieberman is caucusing with Democrats. For all of Lieberman's treachery before 2006, he was rewarded with retaining seniority within the Democratic caucus, getting committee and sub-committee chairmanships, and retaining it all after the 2008 election after endorsing and campaigning for John McCain!

Obama Names Elizabeth Warren To New Post Setting Up Consumer Protection Agency

How ironic.  You saying that I'm rude for calling you an "id-jit" after you insulted me.

Calling you an "id-jit" was kind and loving.

Were I rude, I would have said that you're one of the dvmbest clucks of all the Obamab0ts who have commented online.  That's quite an achievement.

It's either that, that you're dvmb, or, you're a paid political operative (pretending to be dvmb).

If it's the former (that you're so stvp!d you would climb a glass wall to see what's on the other side) or the latter (just pretending to be), it's nothing to celebrate.
