Provenge, Cancer Drug, Costs $93,000: Sky High Drug Prices Impact Life-Or-Death Decisions

Sunday, September 26, 2010

US taxpayers have already paid for these drugs through taxpayer-subsidized research, which was originally sold to the American people as an investment in lowering prices down the road (we would basically share the profits and be partners with the pharmaceutical companies that have profited financially from drug patents).

To open up markets overseas, pharmaceutical companies sell drugs cheapy in foreign countries and have American subsidize the losses.

This is yet another example of both Republicans and the DLC-controlled Democratic Party selling the American people out.  They do not work for us, on our behalf; they are corporate t00Is.

U.S., Afghan Troops Begin Fight To Drive Taliban Out Of Kandahar

When Obama was in the Senate, he voted against the surge in Iraq.

Presidential candidate Barack Obama told reporters: "I am absolutely committed to ending the war. I will call my joint chiefs of staff in and give them a new assignment and that is to end the war."

Do you seriously believe that more Americans in the history of this country voted for this man to keep wars going in Afghanistan and Iraq in perpetuity?

How outrageously offensive that is, to imply that a G0d would take any part of such atrocities against any of his creations.  As if a G0d endorses one side over another.

Magical thinking is a child's activity.

U.S., Afghan Troops Begin Fight To Drive Taliban Out Of Kandahar

The meltdown of the politically-connected Kabul Bank shows that the rampant corruption of the Afghanistan government is jeopardizing the nine-year U.S. war, alienating the people, and making the Taliban look like good-government reformers. And according to one of Washington’s most prestigious defense wonks, it’s all your fault.

Troops Popping Anxiety, Depression Meds Like Never Before

An untold number of active-duty troops and recent veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are coming home with  mental health conditions inflicted during service — and their spouses and children are suffering too. Now, with solid data slowly emerging from the nearly decade-long wars, the severity of the crisis is starting to show.

The use of psychiatric medications among 18 to 34-year-olds (both troops and their spouses) soared by 42 percent between 2005 and 2009, Army Times is reporting.

Antidepressants were the most commonly prescribed medication, but the use of anti-psychotic meds — like Seroquel, which is used off-label to treat nightmares and insomnia caused by PTSD — nearly doubled. And the use of anti-anxiety drugs, like Xanax, surged by 72 percent.

Short Sales Sweep The Nation: Troubled Homeowners Walk Away With Less

Those of us on the left predicted this more than 2 years ago, and described that in spite of rosy pictures painted by politicians, what was coming were waves of job losses followed by home foreclosures, causing more job losses and more home foreclosures, interspersed with businesses closing and bankruptcies and commercial real estate foreclosures, rinse and repeat, more of the same, for years.

What was needed to stop and reverse it was a massive stimulus, with money going for jobs, infrastructure projects, a 'Manhattan Project'-style effort on clean & green sustainable energy (something else that Obama talked about during the 2008 campaign that went by the wayside as soon as he got into the White House), and real healthcare reform (lowering costs while getting medical care for all, which is not at all what ObamaCare does, along with educational expansion and job training for the increased medical needs of a nation being 'Spersed with toxic chemicals by Big Corporations around the nation).

None of it has happened.

Candidate Obama remains MIA, presumably counting his unspent political capital from the 2008, wondering how it's shrinking when he hasn't used a dime of it to fulfill his campaign promises.

Steny Hoyer: Stephen Colbert's Testimony To Congress Was 'An Embarrassment For Mr. Colbert'

There was a time when members of Congress took their work and results seriously, and themselves, no so much.

Now it's the other way around.

It really doesn't matter what their stated intentions are -- They are simply ineffective in accomplishing the People's goals. They are not able to get the job done for the people.

As far as I'm concerned, all incumbents have to go.

Obama Invokes 'State Secrets' Claim To Dismiss Lawsuit Against Targeting Of U.S. Citizen

Have you been diagnosed with a learning disability?  I ask in all seriousness, because the quality of your thought processes come across online as impaired.  You are replying to my comment without your having read it or the links I included.  Had you read them all, you might have understood my comments.

Obama can end DADT for the duration of his term in office with an executive order.  While DADT is suspended through executive order, Congress can continue to "work on" repealing its legislation, and the various court cases challenging DADT can also work their way through the judicial branch of our government.

This past May, the House and a Senate panel passed a plan to repeal DADT, but with the usual slick out-clause or backdoor -- The plan has always been to kick the can down the road as long as possible, keeping Gay Americans disenfranchised and politically active as long as possible.

http://articles.cnn.com/2010-05-28/politics/gays.in.the.military_1_larger-defense-authorization-bill-repeal-white-house?_s=PM:POLITICS>
One way to take much of the energy out of the opposition to repealing DADT is for the president to issue an executive order which would have the effect of getting people used to it so that when the vote does come after the Pentagon's report at the end of the year, deflating hom0phobes' worst fears.

WIth a stroke of a pen, Obama (as the Commander-in-Chief) can go a long way to healing some of the problems in this country in many different ways.  It's good for gays, it's good for the military (we're having problems retaining troop strength, and gay soldiers skills' sets save all soldiers' lives), it's good for the war effort (it is "war time", or so we've been told often enough), it's good for the American people, and it's good for the world.

Obama Invokes 'State Secrets' Claim To Dismiss Lawsuit Against Targeting Of U.S. Citizen

The government was never supposed to be able to decide what the limits of its own power are.
============================================

Yes, it is, and the method by which it accomplishes that is in the Constitution; three separate and distinct branches of government provide the checks and balances.

And for the most part over the past 200+years, when executive branches haven't exploiting loopholes in the Constitution to carve out broad unchecked powers for itself, it has worked very well.

The key to the Constitution and its success, our success as a democracy, is that you to really really want America to work.  More than you want your own way, more than you want your own need for power and authority to dominate, you have to want this country to succeed in order to resist exploiting the loopholes that enable the unbalancing of the power between the 3 branches.

Bush and Cheney and conservatives going back 3 decades (to Nixon, where many of the Bush-Cheney people got their start in politics) didn't, and now it seems Obama doesn't either.  The DLC (which controls the Democratic Party) is no longer hiding their true nature either.

Obama Invokes 'State Secrets' Claim To Dismiss Lawsuit Against Targeting Of U.S. Citizen

A Bushie!  I thought you guys fell through the cracks in the Congressional men's rooms.

Bush is alleged to have said it, according to 3 people who were appalled at his callous disregard for the Constitution and who were in the room during a meeting at the White House as his administration was preparing the Patriot Act for introduction and passage in Congress.

It's certainly in his character to have said it, and his actions over 8 years of careful observation support his actually believing it.

So take it up with Bush.

Obama Invokes 'State Secrets' Claim To Dismiss Lawsuit Against Targeting Of U.S. Citizen

Many commenters, like you, don't really understand what's going on here.  So in an attempt to refocus, here goes:

In response to the lawsuit filed by Anwar Awlaki's father asking a court to enjoin Obama from assassinat!ng his son, a US citizen, without any due process, the administration late last night, according to the Washington Post, filed a brief asking the court to dismiss the lawsuit without hearing the merits of the claims.

That's not surprising:  both the Bush and Obama administrations have repeatedly insisted that their secret conduct is legal but nonetheless urge courts not to even rule on its legality.

But what's most notable here is that one of the arguments the Obama DOJ raises to demand dismissal of this lawsuit is "state secrets":  in other words, not only does a president have the right to sentence Americans to de@th with no due process or charges of any kind, but his decisions as to who will be k!lled and why he wants them de@d are "state secrets," and thus no court may adjudicate their legality.

That, in and of itself, should be shocking to all Americans.

That Obama would do this on the heels of the 2008 campaign where he campaigned for himself as a champion of the Constitution and against Bush's disregard for the rule of law, in addition to the fact that Awlaki has never been charged with a crime, much less convicted, leaves no doubt about Obama's character: He has none.

To those who excuse what Obama's doing as the result of something he's been told in intelligence briefings since assuming office, what do you possibly imagine would justify the literal end this Constitutional democracy?   That's what his effort is telling you, by the way -- That this noble experiment is over.  But back to the question: Imagine the worst.  What could it possibly be?

There's no coming back from this.

Obama, as president and Commander-in-Chief, can end DADT with an executive order (A group of experts in military law concluded Obama can end DADT with the stroke of a pen:  http://www.palmcenter.org/files/active/0/Executive%20Order%20on%20Gay%20Troops%20-%20final.pdf while Congress works on ending it through legislation, and while individuals and groups go about ending it through the courts (the Log Cabin Republicans lawsuit has taken 6 years to get to last week's decision in the federal court).

There's no reason all can't happen simultaneously, and should.  One of the many benefits of an executive order ending DADT is that its implementation begins to knock down the fallacies that exist about gay men and women serving in the military.  It gets people used to it.

It also refocuses attention where I think it always should have been:  The purpose of our military and our true state of preparedness.

How is it that this nation that allegedly stands as a beacon for individual liberty and universal justice can justify separating any competent professional soldiers from service for their sexual orientation in this time of war?

Do you remember this?:

==According to the February 2005 GAO report, seven hundred fifty-seven (about 8 percent) of these separated servicemembers held critical occupations ("voice interceptor," "data processing technician," or "interpreter/translator"), as defined by the services. Also, 322 members (about 3 percent) had some skills in an important foreign language such as Arabic, Farsi, and Korean. "he was let go"
============================

In June 2002, a Denver federal judge signed off on an arrest warrant for al-Awlaki for passport fraud, and not terr0rist activities.

On October 9, the Denver US Attorney's Office rescinded the arrest warrant, having nothing to do with the Saudis.  The prosecutors withdrew the warrant because they felt they ultimately lacked evidence of a crime, according to US Attorney Dave Gaouette, who authorized its withdrawal.

President Obama would not circumvent the Constitution in this situation if he didn't feel the need to.
===================================================

This has got to be one of the most disturbing comments I've ever seen online (if not the most), & one that has to have teachers and civil libertarians (and anyone who's even moderately schooled on civics) wringing their hands and saying kaddish for the USA.

The Constitution isn't "a suggestion"; it's the law of the land.  No law is merely a guideline, as you seem to think the Constitution is, something "we'll try to adhere to, but if it becomes too cumbersome or doesn't enable us to do what we want to do, we're free to ignore it".
