The weapon used was purchased legally. The weapon was one that had been banned during the 1990s, but that law expired in 2004 and Giffords supported ending the ban. She supports gun rights, opposed the Washington DC gun ban, and signed an amicus brief with the US Supreme Court in support of overturning the ban.

The roll call vote in the Senate on the (Dianne) Feinstein amendment to extend the ban, March 2, 2004. Russ Feingold lovers, note his "nay" vote, as well as other Democrats still serving, like Harry Reid, Mary Landrieu, Tim Johnson (not voting), Ben Nelson, Max Baucus.

In 2007, Representative Carolyn Maloney's bill to reinstate the ban with 67 co-sponsors (Giffords was not among them), went nowhere.

HR 6257 (a bill to reinstate the ban on assault weapons, as well as to expand the list of banned weapons, for ten years) was introduced in June 2008, and then got buried in a House subcommittee one month later, where it d!ed at the end of that Congress (2008).

After Obama and Democrats won the 2008 elections and took control of the White House and Congress, Dianne Feinstein said in April 2009 about introducing legislation in the Senate to reinstate the Assault Weapons Ban, "I wouldn't bring it up now."

Obama has stated that he wouldn't push for the reinstatement of the Assault Weapons Ban. He supports ratifying CIFTA, an inter-American treaty to curb international small arms trafficking.

Neither Republicans nor Democrats are willing to take on the gvn lobby (or any corporate industry), nor spend the money on the prevention side (funding for mental health treatment, public education and social safety nets, etc.).

So across America, the fight (& gridlock) continues.

If I had to bet right now, I'd say what is going to come out of this are more draconian laws to ban speech and privacy rights (all of said legislation will be used for drug crimes and political groups working to unseat the entrenched corporate power, and not crimes of 'terr0r').

Gabrielle Giffords Shooting Prompts Appeals To Cool Political Tone

Yes, let's be civil because L0rd knows, nothing is going to change and Democrats wouldn't want to be seen offending the NRA or actually fighting to win against Republicans.

The End Of Access

When you're a member of Congress you have a responsibility to problem-solve and prevent tragedies like this from happening.

Another crazy man got a gun capable of k!lling a great number of people in a short period of time and did it.

Another Virginia Tech massacre.

Another Columbine.

Another Alabama

Another John Allen Muhammad & Lee Boyd Malvo ('Beltway snipers').

Another Christopher Speight, Appomattox shootings.

Another Jeff Weise, Red Lake, Minnesota.

Another Jiverly Wong, Binghamtom, New York.

Another Patrick 'Going Postal' Sherrill, Edmond, Oklahoma

The only difference is fewer people were k!lled this time, yesterday, but two of them were special, members of the 'establishment elites'.

Will the NRA finally be shown the door, expelled from the legislative process, and automatic weapons banned?

Can public schools across the nation now expect monies to be reinstated for counseling and mental health screening and treatment?

How about reinstating public facilities for the emotionally disturbed; money for mental health hospitals?

How about that public option for healthcare, and expanded coverage for mental health treatment?

Is the FCC now going to bring back the Fairness Doctrine and regulate hate radio?

When are these public servants going to get off their @$$es and start working on behalf of the People?

Sen. Lamar Alexander: Irresponsible For The Media To Mention Palin's Crosshairs Map (VIDEO)

It was only a matter of time before it became business as usual.

There's a war going on within our nation, between the left and the right, but the DLC-controlled Democratic Party has tied real Democrats' hands behind their backs, and not let them fight it.  And don't for a minute think that Obama is a 'centrist', and therefore not a player in it -- He's a stealth right-of-centrist, trying to move the Democratic Party to the right, to adopt the policies that Corporations promote.

Nice to finally see the ability to comment back on a Gary Hart thread.  I've thought him immensely cowardly for his autocratic position here, of speaking but not allowing feedback.

Votes have consequences; yours when you were in the US Senate and the people who put you and the others in power who are responsible for the miserable condition of our nation.

Lock and Load and Lost in Tucson Today: What's the Matter with My Arizona?

Dear Jeff Biggers,

What's the matter with your Arizona?

Let's start with this:  Anti-Gay Church To Protest Funerals Of Arizona Shooting Victims

Are you going to be there to counter-protest, to shout these people down, and take back your state?

Are you going to continue to send John McCain and other hate-tolerant politicians to represent you and your interests in government?

It all begins with you and me.

It's war in America, only Democratic politicians and those who vote for them don't seem to realize it.  There is no 'playing nicely' with Republicans, nothing productive for anyone but the richest (and dvmbest) to come from 'bipartisanship' -- Republicans don't want to cooperate or compromise.

Sarah Palin Aide Rebecca Mansour: Our Crosshairs Map Had Nothing To Do With Violence Or Guns

So is the media (and by that I mean Fox since that's all that Palin will talk to) press Palin to see if Mansour is speaking on her behalf?

WIll Fox continue to employ Palin, continue to support her quest for fortune and power, give her a podium from which to hold court?

Will the rest of the media question its incessant reporting on Palin's twitterings and every movement?  She's a private citizen, a failed politician, with no reason to be in the public eye but her own lust for wealth and position.  She's not even an announced candidate for any 2012 run, yet she's got a spokesperson, aides, expressing opinions that she's too cowardly to own.

Media, get your houses in order.

Christina Taylor Green: Arizona Shooting Claims Life Of 9-Year-Old Born On 9/11

Armey bears as much responsibility for this 'incident' as Obama and Rahm Emanuel, who did nothing all last year but help to elevate the Tea Party and their candidates, and Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh,  instead of going directly after the real perpetrators of the policies that have brought us to this brink of destruction--REPUBLICANS in government.

Obama and the DLC-controlled Democratic Party did it because it's all about "the next election" for US politicians.  Obama has yet to go after real Republicans in power, in the US Congress, the actual people giving us the policies that the DINO Democrats claim to object to, but don't actually do anything about changing.

How about real election and campaign finance reform that gets corporations and their obscene profit-making abilities out of the legislative process?

Tucson Shooting Hospital Update: Doctor Optimistic On Gabrielle Giffords Recovery (VIDEO)

No. Since you obviously didn't read past the first sentence, I'll repost it: Obama and the DLC-controlled Democrats are as responsible for the Tea Party's rise as Armey and the Koch brothers. Democrats have relished having the Tea Party, Sarah Palin, and Republican politicians like Michele Bachmann, to play against. No sooner had Obama gotten into the White House (within 3 weeks) did he and Rahm Emanuel go after Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin, 2 people with no official positions within the Republican Party, talking about them on MTP, elevating them to prominence. Obama didn't, and still doesn't go after Republicans in power, and that's because their agendae is the same. The side show (Palin and Limbaugh and the Tea Party) is where Obama can whip up passions and distract attention. All last year as the Tea Party was gaining in influence and strength and bullying at Townhalls and controlling the healthcare debate, Obama went AWOL. When he should have been using the bully pulpit of the presidency, ordering federal marshals to keep order at public squares and debates, instead Democratic members of Congress cancelled their Townhalls. At the exact same time, Obama was sending the Feds to break up peaceful protests in Pittsburgh at the G20 summit, using the military's newest weapons (sound canons).

Keith Olbermann Issues Special Comment On Arizona Shooting: 'Violence Has No Place In Democracy'

Good luck with that message, Keith. We're in year 9 of the longest war in our nation's history, trying to force 'democracy' on nations that have never had it. We have had a Democrat-controlled White House and Congress continuing the t0rturous, violent policies of the Bush-Cheney administration, with no end in sight. As an advocate for non-violence myself, you model what it is you want and expect.

Tucson Shooting Hospital Update: Doctor Optimistic On Gabrielle Giffords Recovery (VIDEO)

There's more than enough blame to go around:

#1 - A nation that doesn't provide for its citizens' basic physical and mental health care needs.

#2 - A government controlled by politicians more interested in their own reelections and after-office incomes through satisfying Big Businesses' demands to be unregulated instead of serving the public's interest, the common good and their constituents' well being.

#3 - The dismantling of what was the finest public education system in the world.

Pogo updated: "We've met the enemy and it's politicians who for the last 40 years have been steadily working to dismantle our civilization."

Both parties are complicit in this.

Gabrielle Giffords Shot: Congresswoman Shot In Arizona (LIVE UPDATES)

Ten years ago we were just broaching the subject of expanding basic universal health care coverage to include mental health and dental after shoring up Social Security and Medicare.  Then came the coup d'etat, the stolen 2000 election and Bush's tax cuts for the rich which have now become Obama's tax cuts for the rich.  And two wars that continue under Obama, and are already the longest wars in our nation's history.

Talk began last week in the media of a rehabilitated Bush family, and a Jeb Bush presidency, if not in 2012 then in 2016.

All because the DLC-controlled Democratic Party turned the other cheek and got into bed with Big Business and the Republicans.

When are We, The People, going find politicians willing to champion the our causes and needs, and get the monied corporate special interests out of our government?
