Oil And Water, Unlike Corporations and Government, Don't Mix

Monday, May 24, 2010

"It may not be possible to fix this. What that means is that if it isn't fixed, that well will continue to gush until there's no more oil in it or the pressure gradients have matched up. It will take 9000 days (30 years) for this well to run dry, and waiting until August for the relief well to be drilled is too late to save the Gulf, the east coast of US and the N. Atlantic Ocean."

-Matthew Simmons, one of the world's leading oil experts on Dylan Ratigan's show today.

Gulf Oil Spill: Obama Administration Insists Its Options Are Limited When It Comes To BP

This actually isn't rocket science. What it's going to take to fix is what it would take to fix had it happened on land. Only with submersibles. By the way, BP doesn't have the market cornered on engineers or submersibles. The kind of submersibles used in operations like this you would typically find in navies.

It may not be possible to fix this. What that means is that if it isn't, that well will continue to gush until there's no more oil in it or the pressure gradients have matched up.

There are different legs of this disaster, and stopping the oil gushing is one part. Protecting the coastlines and wetlands is another. Cleaning up the oil from the sea is another. Preventing any of the other deepsea drilling rigs from ever leaking is another. There are better methods than what BP is doing. For Obama to hand the reins over to BP is more than cr@zy -- It's criminal.

White House Seeks To Speed Up 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Repeal

Lawmakers are expected to introduce legislation this week that would repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy this year – sooner than expected – although implementation would have to await a Defense Department review. If Congress approves the repeal, it would still take several years before gays and lesbians could serve openly while the Pentagon writes a policy based on its review.

Obama is still playing politics with this issue, dragging his feet to be able to use it for elections and voter turnout, when all he needs to do is sign an executive order.

A group of experts in military law concluded Obama can end DADT with the stroke of a pen:

http://www.palmcenter.org/files/active/0/Executive%20Order%20on%20Gay%20Troops%20-%20final.pdf

I am now convinced that Obama is pathologically incapable of executive leadership, and is (and always will be) just a politician.

Stop spreading l!es!

Look, I have more passi0nate loathing for Bush&Cheney than any 12 0bamabots combined, but nobody "disobeyed" Obama.

If that was an actual fact, then Obama would be firing them and revoking those permits and waivers. He's NOT. As a matter of fact, Ken Salazar is on record supporting their issuance.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/24/us/24moratorium.html?src=mv

And there is no civil service protections for government workers who are insubordinate. If Obama wanted to get rid of Bush-Cheney ringers, he could. The "impossibility of firing civil service workers" is myth. But that's another argument for another time.

A corporation's charter was required to be dissolved after 40 years back at the time of the founding of the US, so suspicious and cautious were the earliest Americans about corporations.

Now, corporations are immortal, which is another abzurdity about their being considered 'persons' under the law.

Following the reducto ad absurdum of corporations as people, if you look at them as people, the vast majority of them could be diagnosed as sociopaths. They're completely self-absorbed, their only motivation is profit and destroying competition (other corporations or by the same legal definition other people), they have no conscience, no capacity for empathy.

The only time corporations do something that could be construed as generous or for the greater good is when their consultants tell them it's good for business. It's like they display all of the lower qualities of human beings - greed avarice predatory nature. The same behavior in a flesh and blood human being would elicit cries of shame in the community, but somehow it's just fine for a corporation to behave that way. Somehow it's just fine for a corporation to behave in ways that if displayed by a flesh and blood human, it would be considered appalling.

And they can't be criminally prosecuted.

Connecticut Senate: 2010 Election BREAKING News

I think Vietnam vets who go after Kerry are the saddest, most broken & lost brothers of all those who've seen combat. I think they've conflated the US leaving Vietnam with their own service, and believe it means their service was a failure, that they are losers. I think they wanted to return home to ticker tape parades & treated like heroes like WWII veterans. And even then only some WWII veterans had that kind of homecoming, the first wave who arrived home from the european theater as a jubilant nation was celebrating an end to 5 years of the entire world at war, where everyone's lives were caught up in it -- Years of rationing will do that. Those returning later, from the pacific theater didn't get that kind of reception.

I think Vietnam vets like you expected that war to give their lives meaning & status before they ever left to fight it. When that didn't happen, they blamed the left for ruining it for them.

I think you need to do some serious reevaluation because it's not us liberals who deprived you of glory. It was the endeavors that you chose, still choose, man-against-man, the violent inhumanity of conflict and war that deprived you & is apparently still running your life.

But what Kerry wants you to forget is his dispicable conduct after leaving the service, which alienated so many and has been well documented, unless of course, you dismiss that part, willfully, or just because your that kind of a Dem, who will believe ANYTHING another Dem says.

====================================

If you've read anything I've written here you would know that I am an old proud liberal Democrat, and NOBODY is harder on Democrats than I am. But I go after them honestly, with the facts and on real issues.

And you seem to be just that kind of Republican who keeps moving the goal posts, changing your argument, what it is that really irks you, when your original argument has been proven not to hold water.

But that's fine, I'll address your problem with his having destroyed his medals (citations, yada yada, I'm up on the minutiae of this picayune beef) and anti-war activities once back in the states.

Let's cut to the chase:

You supported the war in Vietnam & have been stuck for the last 35 years believing we never should have left. It has defined your entire life, shaped every decision you've made politically, had you loathing and out of step with more than 50 percent of your countrymen, & for what?

Let's say that you're right, we're all wrong, the war had continued, you & more unwilling drafted soldiers hadn't been killed, and we'd actually won that war. How would Vietnam be different or better today?

War isn't the answer. Never has been.

Gulf Oil Spill: Salazar Threatens To 'Push' Out BP, But Offers No Terms Or Deadlines

MMS is an executive branch agency, directed and controlled by the president.

Whether it happened under Bush's watch (and it did) no longer matters because Obama chose to block all investigations and prosecutions into that administration's activities.

By doing that, Obama (for all intents and purposes) was certifying that what went on wouldn't be going on, and that it was all now his responsibility. Obama would make it all better. It's been 16 months and what we're finding out is that Obama has continued Bush's policies throughout all of the government. It's not that he hasn't gotten to it yet -- He's rubber-stamped and is continuing what Bush and Cheney did.

All offshore drilling is dangerous, especially deepsea drilling, and all of these rigs have histories of problems.

What's becoming problematic for Obama is that after having issued a moratorium on the issuance of new drilling permits after this explosion, new drilling permits have been issued and for deeper sites than Deepwater Horizon. Obama's response (through Salazar before the Congress) to questions about these permits show how yet again, Obama's trying to deceive Congress, playing word games:
