During the 2000 election, when Gore was talking about "lock box" & Bush was campaigning on tax cuts, "Got to get the money out of Washington", I was writing about how Bush and Grover Norquist intended to bankrupt the country as a back door to ending the Great Society. That no politician would be able to end Social Security head on, because it was so popular with the People. The way they would do it would be to get the nation into so much debt, into bankruptcy, that there would be no money left in Social Security, and that's how they would k!ll it.
When he got into the White House after the contentious 2000 election (when Republicans stole the election), and rammed those tax cuts through, no Democrats talked about "what about if we need that money for a rainy day?" Or "should we find ourselves in a war".
Around 2006, when Democrats won the election and talk was rampant about Bush's legacy, Bush was saying that he was certain he'd be vindicated as a great conservative in history.
Even conservatives didn't see what he was talking about. That what he's counting on is the end of the Great Society programs, like Social Security and Medicare, vindicating him. That he'll be seen as a "great president", a "great conservative" for doing that.
Democratic politicians knew this, and they let it happen.

That's one way to see it.
Another way is that homes that have been foreclosed on are sitting vacant, not selling, banks are not lowering prices to sell them. The houses are becoming run down, tall weeds, homeless are squatting in them (no electricity, no water), and it's bringing down the values of the homes around them. One burned down in my city recently, because squatters were burning candles, fell asleep and knocked them over.

You're not limited to voting for just Democrats & Republicans. There are other alternatives besides sitting out the election or voting for Republicans. There are other candidates running as independents, from Green to Libertarian, in just about every race.
Last week Obama refused to endorse the (progressive) Democratic candidate for governor in Rhode Island, because Obama "doesn't want to offend" the Independent candidate, LincolnChaffee. One effect of that is the suppression of the Democratic turnout in Rhode Island, thus risking PatrickKennedy's seat going 'R' (Kennedy is leaving the House, not running for reelection).
Obama, RahmEmanuel, the DLC, DavidAxelrod, DavidPlouffe, all have worked their @$$es off to prevent real progressives getting into office. One example right off the bat is BlancheLincoln.
The WhiteHouse put its full weight & support behind BlancheLincoln over the true progressive candidate in the primary, union-backed Lt. GovernorBillHalter.
This wasn't unlike when Obama made a deal with ArlenSpecter & put the full weight &support of the Democratic machine behind Specter during the 2010 primary in Pennsylvania, trying to buy off (among other alternative candidates Democratic voters in PA might have wanted to vote to have representing them) JoeSestak. Consider that -- Obama actively went about trying to prevent Democratic voters from choosing their preferred candidate for the US so that a DINO, Republican ArlenSpecter, could retain the seat.

I suggest that you consider Democrats & Republicans as working on the same side, as tag relay teams (or like siblings competing for parental approval). 'Good cop/bad cop'. One side (Republicans) makes brazen frontal assaults on the People, & when the People have had enough, they put Democrats into power because of Democrats' populist rhetoric.
Once in power, Democrats consolidate Republicans' gains from previous years, & continue on with Republican policies but renamed, with new advertising campaigns. They throw the People a few bones, but once Democrats leave office, we learn that those bones really weren't what WeThePeople thought they were.
Whenever the People get wise to the shenanigans & all the different ways they've been tricked & start seeing Democrats as no different than Republicans, Democrats switch the strategy. They invent new reasons for failing to achieve the People's business -- This current one, because "Democrats are nicer, not as ruthless, not criminal" etc., is custom-tailored to Obama's 'bipartisan cooperation' demeanor. Except that time when Democrats really needed to be seen as fighting for the People, when Jim Bunning threatened to filibuster extending unemployment payments, and Harry Reid forced him to actually stand up and speak non-stop. Bunning and the GOP caved. Filibustering is hard on those soft pampered bodies.

Democrats have everyone they need, to do the job they were put into power to do for the American people.
During the Bush years, Democrats said if the People wanted change, they had to put Democrats in the majority in Congress. So in 2006, we did. Nothing changed.
Democrats said, "You have to give us more Democrats -- 60 in the Senate". In 2008, we gave them the 60. And the White House.
Obama came into office with the wind at his back. More people voted for him, a black man in America, than ever in the history of the US. They did it because of his ability to persuade that he was going to change the system, end the corporatocracy, lobbyism in government -- He was going to be the People's president, not a corporate t00I.
And no sooner did Obama get elected than he slammed the brakes on the momentum of his election & a filibuster-proof Senate (tentative yet, with 2 senators, Kennedy & Byrd, at d.e.a.t.h's door), Obama did a 180-degree turn on his promises & sloooooowed everything down. To "work in a bipartisan manner with Republicans", after Republicans had already announced they were going to block everything Democrats wanted to do, vote no on everything, in lockstep.
There were many routes to getting real Democratic legislation through, but Obama & the DLC-controlled Democrats in Congress refused to do any of them.
Obama's a DINO, & until his 'most ardent supporters' get that, we're d00med.

For the first few years after the DLC took control over the Democratic Party, there was room for doubt. But there hasn't been for a long while now.
And after 8 years of Bush-Cheney, Obama came into power with a golden opportunity (a catastrophic crisis) to get through sweeping change that Democratic voters put Obama & Democrats into power to achieve on their behalf, i.e., undo 30+ years of Republican programming.

How does any Democratic voter defend Obama after he asserts he has the right to k!ll any American citizen without due process or oversight? And 'preventive detention'? And Obama's claims of 'state secrets' to deny courts even look at his a$$a$$ination program?

Obama's not running these wars any differently than Bush and Cheney did. To end a war, you put one boot in front of the other and you leave. There's no intention by this government of ever leaving. There's never going to be total subjugation of the Iraqi, Afghan, Pakistani, Yemen, Somalia, etc., peoples. As long as they are being occupied and forced to live under brutal dictatorships by us, they will try to make Americans' lives hurt as much as theirs hurt.
That's the nature of a democratic republic -- We The People are responsible for what our elected representatives do to others around the world in our name. We empower our leaders with massive weaponry to destroy other people's lives, so why are we surprised when they don't sit still for it, don't say, "Please sir, may I have another?!"

Here's the problem (and how some abusive HP commenters are getting to be m0d2s and scrubbing comments they don't like):
The system can be scammed by setting up an account from which to intentionally offend and another to earn higher status by flagging it.
You create 2 or more 'sock' accounts here at HP. In one of the accounts, you post abusive comments, and in another you flag them until the HP system rewards you with a m0d2 status.
Then the trouble starts.
The only way to identify and remove the abusive m0d2 is by reporting it. The internal m0ds can track the URL back to the abuser.
Rogue m0d2s can be eliminated by reporting them. They attack after the internal m0ds have cleared a comment and posted it. When a comment vanishes, act quickly on reporting it. You'll be defending the entire thread, not to mention democracy, the first amendment, freedom, the American way, & all life continuing on the planet. ;-)

Tim Russert was a very likable man, but he, too, had a conservative leaning perspective that favored Republicans and treated them as legitimate mainstream. You don't get to be part of the mainstream media in Washington without being one of the insiders yourself, or willing to defer to the establishment elites. And once you start doing that, it's a slippery slope, with far too many perks that make it too tempting to risk offending them.

I don't think this is having the desired effect on me that the 'terr0rists' had in mind:
It makes me want to vote out every last incumbent, both parties, and put people into Congress and the White House who will burn the Pentagon and Langley to the ground and salt the ashes.

Here's an idea -- Let's look at the TAPE:
We've let 'them' invade our privacy, take away our rights, spend our national fortune on surveillance technology to track our every move. Are 'they' now telling us they don't have cameras at thoroughfares and hubs all over airports? Or the cameras have no film in them?
What have they really done with all of that money?
Now I really want to purge all incumbents out of Congress, and get senators and congressmen who will audit where the money went and fire the incompetents who have let this drag on for 9 years.

Al Gore won. Gore got more votes in Florida. Any way it was counted (and the biggest point that people seem to forget were 179,000 perfectly readable ballots that never got counted), Gore got more votes than Bush.

That was a stolen election.
Had Nader not run the outcome would have been the same. If the means to getting Bush-Cheney into office required a close election and Nader not been running, some other means would have been used. The powers that be were not going to let Gore win, no matter what, and gamed it innumerable ways.
For pity's sake, the CIA was working on GOP absentee ballots in the weeks leading up to election day in Florida. Jeb Bush & Katherine Harris had been working for two years to purge voters from the polls.
Do people forget all the different ways that that election was gamed by the GOP, and all of the ways that the Democratic establishment abandoned Gore? And that's just in Florida, and just the ways that we learned about because of legal proceedings in the post-election days.

Between today's breaking story about Bill Clinton & Meeks in Florida, and what happened last week in Rhode Island, why should you vote for Democrats when even Obama & Clinton aren't committed to them?:
Last week Obama refused to endorse the Democratic candidate for governor in Rhode Island, because Obama "doesn't want to offend" the Independent candidate, Lincoln Chaffee. One effect of that is the suppression of the Democratic turnout in Rhode Island, thus risking Patrick Kennedy's seat going 'R' (Kennedy is leaving the House, not running for reelection).
More progressives in Congress means real populist legislation getting passed into law. Real reform bills, that re-regulate banks & big business. Real stimulus bills, with jobs creation, green clean energy development, and more. But that's not who or what Obama & the DLC-controlled Democrats are about. They're DINOs, working on behalf of corporations' interests, competing with Republicans for those great big corporate donations.
This "overall positive agenda" you speak about of Obama's is non-existent. It's empty rhetoric that doesn't match any of his actions.
Can you envision any time when you would say, "Ok, it's time to stop voting for Democrats?"

I've been buying into the "lesser of two ev!ls (DLC Democrats) "-argument since the DLC took over the DemocraticParty in the late 1980s.
I have watched the DLC take the DemocraticParty farther to the right each election cycle, promising change & reform, blaming the lack of it on voters for not electing enough Democrats liberals progressives, all the while the party leaders are bankrolling pro-corporate DINOs over true liberals & cooperating with Republicans in Congress.
Never are the party leaders using the bully pulpit of their offices to educate or inform the American people as to the great traditions of liberal Democracy & how the People have prospered under liberal Democrats.
Currently, this DINO of a president has continued just about all of the Bush-Cheney policies & gone Bush-Cheney one better in several areas. Civil rights abuses that Bush & Cheney could only fantasize about, never dare try, Obama's doing.
How does any Democratic voter defend Obama after he asserts he has the right to k!ll any American citizen without due process or oversight? And 'preventive detention'? And Obama's claims of 'state secrets' to deny courts even look at his a$$a$$ination program?
How does any Democratic voter defend Obama & DLC-Democrats making a corporate welfare program disguised as healthcare reform into the law of the land, that doesn't do what Democrats were put into power to get for the People, i.e., affordable quality medical treatment (and never will)?
