House Passes Debt Limit Deal

Monday, August 1, 2011

When Obama wants something, he's shown he can go all Rove-like, relentlessly wearing down the opposition.  The problem is that he and the DLC-controlled DemocraticParty don't want what the Democratic voters put them into power to get.

We already know that cutting taxes does not create jobs and creating jobs is what is needed and what will solve our fiscal problems.  Yet Obama has already capitulated to Republicans, caving to (at minimum) a $1 trillion plan that paves the way to slashing (and ending) Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.

Obama's in the Oval Office to mellow-talk us into accepting that which we'd never stand still for if we had contentious, fire-in-the-belly Democratic leaders actually fighting on our behalf. Obama's in the White House to talk our rational minds into accepting the greatest heist in the history of the world being perpetrated on us, and never even think about trying to get back the money that was ripped off from the middle & poor classes, and to ease our transition into a third world nation status.

Obama is the grifter leading off the second half of the con game, which is to squeeze the rest of the dimes from the poor and middle classes. It began with part 2 of Bush's Medicare Reform Act of 2003 (high-priced junk health insurance that has no cost controls), and has continued with his push for more *AFTA treaties (outsourcing more Americans' jobs) and the Deficit (Cat Food) Commissions, 1 and 2.

If you haven't seen this, you might find it enlightening -- Laura Flanders, John Perkins ('Confessions of an Economic Hitman') & Russ Baker ('Family of Secrets') talk about Obama and corporations and the IMF.

It now turns out that Obama was fully prepared to use the 14th amendment solution had there been no deal.   Democratic voters got punked by Obama.

It's not compromise, it's going after what the Repubs and Obama have wanted for years - our insurance policies that they like to called entitlements - which they're not. It's reducing the masses to apathy. It's a coup on Democracy. It's Inverted Totalitarianism where the cost-effective for the elite rules over peoples rights around the globe. The goal is Neo-feudalism for all but the top 2%

=====================================================

When politicians say that "SocialSecurity is the third rail of politics", they mean it with a hostility that should be reserved for their CorporateMasters.  Let's remember that it was Obama who put SS and Medicare on the table, not the Republicans.

You don't see politicians putting CampaignFinance and ElectionReform on their agenda from year to year as you do their continuing assaults on SocialSafetyNet programs for the People.

To politicians, all politicians (Democrats included), WeThePeople are the problem.  If only they didn't have to deal with making us happy to get our votes that keep them employed.  If only they didn't have to serve us, they'd be able to give large to BigBusiness, privatizing national resources owned collectively to us all, WeThePeople, and deregulate so that corporations wouldn't be constrained by anything, could become profit-making machines on steroids, unobstructed by piddling voter concerns, such as  health, safety, environment, etc.  And for accomplishing this, politicians would be amply rewarded, perhaps even enter the ruling class themselves.

You can choose to believe what you will about Democratic politicians, but the fact is that the DLC controls the DemocraticParty, and that Democrats in Congress and in the WhiteHouse have signed on to privatize public resources, utilities and deregulate (Democrats in Congress, despite all their campaign promises, have refused to regulate or perform their Constitutionally-required role of oversight, both in the Bush and Obama administrations  -- What little regulating they've put in legislation the last 2 years is ineffective for a whole array of very sneaky moves).  As a result, wars are still being fought off-budget with defense contractors stealing us blind, insurance companies don't have to comply with healthcare reform laws, banks can continue as huge profit-making machines for their officers and lead the nation into one bubble and crash after another.

You can choose to think of Obama and his intentions in whatever way makes you happy.  What you can't do is explain how any of what Obama's done these past two years has been in the People's and not the Corporations' interests.

What's gotten lost in the news cycles these past months is Obama's new NAFTA-like treaties that means more Americans' jobs will be outsourced overseas.  Then there's Obama's CatFoodCommission (and its plan for gutting SocialSecurity and Medicare), along with the renewed push on TheDreamAct, which means a flood of immigrants working for slave wages.

WeThePeople are being transformed, from sheep to sacrificial lambs.

Talk of Democratic politicians having no spines are greatly exaggerated, just like Obama's timidity is myth:  He's plenty tough when it comes to standing up to Democratic voters.

Democratic voters have mistakenly believed that Obama and Democrats want what they want. The DLC-controlled Democratic Party gives lip service to all populist issues (like jobs, Social Security and Medicare, civil rights protections, restoring habeas corpus, ending the wars, public healthcare, Wall Street reform, environmental and energy issues, etc.).

If the Bush years taught us anything, it's that anyone can sell anything to Americans, if you're stolid and relentless in your sales pitch and tactics. It's not that Bush and Rove were geniuses and knew something that nobody else knew; Bush and Rove were just more ruthless in doing what politicians and the parties had gone to great lengths to hide from Americans -- If you keep at it, escalate your attacks,  don't take 'no' for an answer and never back away, you will wear the opposition down.

Obama didn't get to be the first black president, vanquish the Clinton machine (to get the nomination) and the oldest, most experienced politicians in US history (including the Rove machine) by not having mastered these skills. Nor do Democratic politicians (more incumbents than ever, in office longer) not know how to do it. How do you think Democrats managed to keep impeaching Bush and Cheney off the table, have us still reelecting them and not marching on Washington with torches and pitchforks?

Obama and Democrats know how to do it -- They don't want to do it.

The trick for them has been to keep the many different populist groups believing that they really do support our issues, but they're merely inept. And to get us to keep voting for them despite their failure to achieve our alleged shared objectives.

Getting Democratic voters (and Obama's 'most ardent supporters') to understand that Democratic politicians have been taking us all for suckers and patsies is the most immediate problem and the challenge.

Unemployed Ignored In Debt Ceiling Deal

Obama took single payer (Medicare For All) off the table, because if the goal is to get affordable quality medical care for all then everything else pales in comparison.  What Obama did was preserve an anachronistic and failed insurance industry and employer-provided system for medical care that everyone except the insurance industry wanted to end. It's government sanctioned racketeering.

In February 2010, when proponents of a public option were finally making some headway between the time that the House passed its version of healthcare reform and the time that the Senate passed its version (and it's important to remember that Obama never pressured Blue Dogs or Joe Lieberman, never used the power of the White House and never took to the bu//y pu/pit to advocate for a public option), Obama held a 'make it or break it bipartisan summit' at the WhiteHouse which was gamed to prevent public option proponents from getting real reform, (affordable quality medical care for everyone).  PO proponents were shut out of the negotiations.  Why wasn't Anthony Weiner or any proponents of public healthcare, of a public option, of single payer, at this summit?

The summit was gamed to let insurance companies retain their lock on the path to getting healthcare.

Whether it's Republicans saying no or Democrats saying yes, to attend this summit you must have accepted that the insurance industry's ability to make profits off of you be preserved and protected, despite it bankrupting the American people individually and the nation at large.

Insurance adds NOTHING to the medical model. The insurance industry is the 'Don Fanucci' (Godfather, Part II) of medical care; the insurance industry is "wetting its beak", letting you get medical care (maybe, if you can afford the deductibles, the co-pays, and if your illness is covered by your policy, but) only if you pay them a gratuity up front.

Obama ultimately passed his healthcare bill through reconciliation.  50 + 1.

There's rarely a majority in Congress to pass anything at all until a campaign has been mounted to sell it.

And when a president and his political party are swept into power to deliver affordable, quality medical treatment for all as Obama and Democrats were in 2008, and the one method that can accomplish it (and also happens to solve other unique problems facing us at the time, i.e., a crashing economy, joblessness, etc.) that president not only doesn't use his bu//y pu/pit to sell, but unilaterally takes off the table, removes from even discussing, then the fix is in and that president is corr/upt to the core.

Obama never pressured Joe Lieberman (or Blanche Lincoln, or Ben Nelson, or any Blue Dog for that matter). The Democratic leadership could've taken away committee chairs (Blanche Lincoln's, too) of members in their caucus that filibustered a public option for healthcare. They didn't.

The DNC could've taken away reelection funds. They didn't.

Reid could've actually forced Republicans and turncoat Democratic senators to filibuster. He didn't (& doesn't).

The Progressive Caucus could have kept their pledge about not voting for a bill that didn't include a robust public option. They didn't.

Obama DID unleash the attack dogs to go after Howard Dean when Dean said it was a lousy bill. Dean was then forced to get back into line. Obama went after Kucinich, the last remaining holdout on the Progressive Caucus, for threatening to vote no on the healthcare bill, and we all know how that ended.

There's nothing that JoeLieberman (or BenNelson or BlancheLincoln) is doing that Obama hasn't ordered. Obama and the DLC-Democrats want Lieberman there, doing what he's doing, which is to take the heat off of Democrats.

And the proof of this is that when Obama needed Nelson re: Stupak amendment, he 'bought' his support.  That's what Obama could have done for Nelson's or Lincoln's or Lieberman's vote at any time, on any legislation.  He sure did it when he needed MaryLandrieu's vote.

There could be 100 "progressives" in the Senate and 435 in the House, and they and Obama would still find a way to deliver to corporations instead of the People blame it on Republicans. Because they're DLC, aka Republicans-in-Democrats'-clothing.

Ditto for the head of his NationalEconomicCouncil. Although appointing LarrySummers might have been a bit of a stretch, despite his yeoman work in destroying financial regulation—thus enriching his old boss RobertRubin and helping cause the Crash of 2008—McCain could easily have found a JackKemp-like Republican “supply-sider” who would have duplicated Summers’ signal achievement of expanding the deficit to the highest level since 1950 (though perhaps with a slightly higher percentage of tax cuts than the Obama stimulus). The economy would have continued to sputter along, with growth rates and joblessness levels little different from today’s, and possibly even worse.

But McCain’s election would have produced a major political difference: It would have increased Democratic clout in the House and Senate.

Silly rabbit.

If McCain Had Won

McCain would probably have approved a failed troop surge in Afghanistan, engaged in worldwide extrajudicial assassination, destabilized nuclear-armed Pakistan, failed to bring Israel’s BenjaminNetanyahu to the negotiating table, expanded prosecution of whistle-blowers, sought to expand executive branch power, failed to close Guantanamo, failed to act on climate change, pushed both nuclear energy and opened new areas to domestic oil drilling, failed to reformthe financial sector enough to prevent another financial catastrophe, supported an extension of the BushTaxCuts for the rich, presided over a growing divide between rich and poor, and failed to lower the jobless rate.

Nothing reveals the true state of American politics today more, however, than the fact that has undertaken all of these actions and, even more significantly, left the DemocraticParty far weaker than it would have been had McCain been elected. Few issues are more important than seeing behind the screen of a myth-making mass media, and understanding what this demonstrates about how power in America really works—and what needs to be done to change it.

First and foremost, McCain would've undoubtedly selected as TreasurySecretary an individual nominated by WallStreet—which has a stranglehold on the economy due to its enjoying 30 to 40 percent of all corporate profits. If he didn’t select TimGeithner, a reliable servant of financial interests whose nomination might have allowed McCain to trumpet his “maverick” credentials, whoever he did select would clearly have also moved to bail out the financial institutions and allow them to water down needed financial reforms.

I heard that silly analogy by one of MSNBC's contributors last night.

Obama conflated raising the debt ceiling with spending cuts.  Obama, NOT Republicans, put Social Security and Medicare on the table.  The Progressives in Congress have abandoned people's issues and positions, such as a public option, even when their votes weren't needed, but Obama wanted to break the progressive movement.

Unemployed Ignored In Debt Ceiling Deal

Unemployment is at 9.2 percent.  There have been 3.5 million home foreclosures so far in this meltdown with another 11 million in the pipeline.  11 MILLION.  That's 15 million families about to lose their homes.  With these foreclosures come another wave of job losses, more business downturns which will lead to another round of both home and commercial real estate foreclosures.

Like all other deals that Obama has 'negotiated', he's got yet another NAFTA-like trade deal, with S. Korea, that will be joining his others in the coming weeks in Congress for ratification.  These trade deals are bad for the American people -- More Americans' job will be moving overseas.

99ers (millions of unemployed) aren't covered in this deal, nor were they covered when Obama extended Bush's tax cuts for the rich in December.

Of the 6 million people currently receiving unemployment benefits, Obama's deal to extend Bush's tax cuts covered only 2 million, and many of them will get crumbs from his deal -- In spite of the 13-month extension, benefits will be cut off for many of those in the coming months when they reach 99-weeks.  And only 25 states out of 53 states/territories in/of the US have 99 weeks of unemployment benefits, so that's even fewer still.

This is an absolutely wretched deal, but standard for Obama, who has  a long record of negotiating lousy deals on ordinary citizens' behalf.  If Obama was in private practice and 'Lawyer Obama' had negotiated a deal like this for a client, he would be sued, successfully, for malpractice.

The purpose of Obama's deal to extend Bush's tax cuts for the rich was so that political operatives could say on websites like this one, "Obama helped the unemployed", and most won't know the actual facts of how Obama sold out the American people.  Again.

The purpose of this latest deal was to slash spending and get NO REVENUE INCREASES.  Raising the debt ceiling was a wholly separate matter and one that could have been done last year in several ways (with a Democratic lame duck Congress or as part of the deal to extend Bush's tax cuts, OR most recently, by invoking one of several Constitutional methods and just raise it on his own).

The more we see of Obama in action, the more 'deals' he makes, the more people realize what a fraud Obama is, and a continuation of the cruel policies of Bush-Cheney.  We need another FDR, and all we're getting are words reframing Obama's deals with the GOP to lead us to believe we're really getting great deals.

Debt Ceiling Deal Reached To Avert Default (LATEST UPDATES)

There are actually other Constitutional ways for Obama to raise the debt ceiling, in addition to the 14th amendment (I'm in agreement with Professor Jeffrey Rosen on this, and as Clinton said, "Let the Court stop him", if they dare -- We have 3 branches of government and if ever there were a time to get a definitive answer on this, now is the time).

The only reason Obama isn't just doing it is because he wants to make deep cuts in these social programs.  Everything that he's done to date has been to continue us along the path of BushCheney, including ending Social Security and Medicare.  The payroll tax holiday is one of many examples.  It's death by cuts, by attrition.

Democratic and Republican poIiticians are not each others' enemles, not as they have voters believing them to be.  Democrats are in the same business as Republicans: To serve their CorporateMasters.

Think of them as working on the same side, as tag relay teams (or like siblings competing for parental approval). 'Good cop/bad cop'. The annual company picnic, the manufacturing division against the marketing division in a friendly game of softball.  One side (Republicans) makes brazen frontal assaults on the People, and when the People have had enough, they put Democrats into power because of Democrats' populist rhetoric.

Once in power, Democrats consolidate Republicans' gains from previous years, then continue on with Republican policies but renamed, with new advertising campaigns. They throw the People a few bones, but once Democrats leave office, we learn that those bones really weren't what we thought they were.
