Bradley Manning Hearing: Judge Refuses To Dismiss 'Aiding The Enemy' Charge

Thursday, April 26, 2012

Candidate Obama, in his own words:

"Transparency Will Be Touchstone"

"On transparency", "About inviting the people back into their government again", and "Part of the job of the next American president is making Americans believe that our government is working for them, because right now they don't feel like it's working for them. They feel like it's working for special interests and it's working for corporations"

"We need a president who sees the government not as a tool to enrich well connected friends and high-priced lobbyists, but as a defender of fairness and opportunity for every single American. That's what this country's been about and that's the kind of president I intend to be"

"Meetings where laws are written will be more open to the public, no more secrecy.....No more secrecy....."

"Clintons did health care the wrong way, behind closed doors"

Bradley Manning Hearing: Judge Refuses To Dismiss 'Aiding The Enemy' Charge

I see Manning as serving the interests of the People.  After all, what Manning did, what we're talking about, is transparency.  Transparency is something that the American people voted overwhelmingly for in the 2008 election by putting Obama into office (he did run on it), only to have their hopes dashed by an even more secretive administration than Bush-Cheney.

The government is serving the interests of a few, the 1%, corporations over 99% of the people.  The American people were lied into a war that has destroyed us, and those running our government refuse to prosecute the crimes that were committed.  But a whistleblower, someone who exposed the crimes committed, is being prosecuted.

Anyone who doesn't appreciate that, anyone who calls Manning "the enemy", is himself an enemy of the Constitution and the American people.

John Boehner: President Obama's Travel For Student Loan Bill Is 'Pathetic' (UPDATE)

You do realize that, as records on women's reproduction go, Romney's is better than Obama's?

Mind you, I am an old liberal Democrat who has never voted for a Republican and never will.  But there's no denying that as governor, RomneyCare had the state co-paying abortions while as president, ObamaCare, with the StupakAmendment and Obama's ExecutiveOrder, Obama and Democrats have put us firmly on the path of ending all insurance coverage for abortions.

Younger Voters Shift From Obama

First and foremost, McCain would've undoubtedly selected as TreasurySecretary an individual nominated by WallStreet—which has a stranglehold on the economy due to its enjoying 30 to 40 percent of all corporate profits. If he didn’t select TimGeithner, a reliable servant of financial interests whose nomination might have allowed McCain to trumpet his “maverick” credentials, whoever he did select would clearly have also moved to bail out the financial institutions and allow them to water down needed financial reforms.

Ditto for the head of his NationalEconomicCouncil. Although appointing LarrySummers might have been a bit of a stretch, despite his yeoman work in destroying financial regulation—thus enriching his old boss RobertRubin and helping cause the Crash of 2008—McCain could easily have found a JackKemp-like Republican “supply-sider” who would have duplicated Summers’ signal achievement of expanding the deficit to the highest level since 1950 (though perhaps with a slightly higher percentage of tax cuts than the Obama stimulus). The economy would have continued to sputter along, with growth rates and joblessness levels little different from today’s, and possibly even worse.

But McCain’s election would have produced a major political difference: It would have increased Democratic clout in the House and Senate. [read more here..]

All that it's presumed that McCain would have done, Obama's done.

But is there any doubt that had it been McCain (or if it's Romney), there would have been an active push-back from Democrats, a public dialogue at the very least, articulating the left's position, demanding recognition of another way, blocking Republicans' policies?

With Obama, there's no seat at the table for the left.  Obama doesn't even allow liberals into his administration and as such, "the left side of the debate" gets defined as whatever Obama says (which explains how conservative trolls keep saying he's a socialist, a liberal).

Even more ironically, If McCain Had Won:

McCain would probably have approved a failed troop surge in Afghanistan, engaged in worldwide extrajudicial assassination, destabilized nuclear-armed Pakistan, failed to bring Israel’s BenjaminNetanyahu to the negotiating table, expanded prosecution of whistle-blowers, sought to expand executive branch power, failed to close Guantanamo, failed to act on climate change, pushed both nuclear energy and opened new areas to domestic oil drilling, failed to reform the financial sector enough to prevent another financial catastrophe, supported an extension of the BushTaxCuts for the rich, presided over a growing divide between rich and poor, and failed to lower the jobless rate.

Nothing reveals the true state of American politics today more, however, than the fact that has undertaken all of these actions and, even more significantly, left the DemocraticParty far weaker than it would have been had McCain been elected. Few issues are more important than seeing behind the screen of a myth-making mass media, and understanding what this demonstrates about how power in America really works—and what needs to be done to change it.

Younger Voters Shift From Obama

I hope we can agree this country definitely does'nt need (R) governance.

===========================

And yet that is precisely what we're getting with Obama.  How Obama has handled the massive problems is EXACTLY how Republicans would've handled them (and how BushCheney was handling them).  Obama's not governing as he had promised or as a real Democrat would have.

The real shame, the real tragedy for all of us is that Obama could have been a transcendent president, good for both business AND the People.  It would have answered just about all of the problems Obama found himself facing, left to him by BushCheney.

And here's the real rub:

Just as Obama is accusing Romney of flip-flopping on issues, so has Obama flip-flopped and reneged on campaign promises.  The irony is that, if past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior, Romney's record as governor isn't all that dissimilar from Obama's in the White House.  There were even moments of liberalism to Romney's record (gun control, state co-pays for abortion, etc.) - Certainly more progressive than Obama.

John Boehner: President Obama's Travel For Student Loan Bill Is 'Pathetic' (UPDATE)

The President nominates someone to the Court - they still have to go through the Senate to be confirmed.

========================================

Hence my stating, "Scalia and Thomas made it through a Democratically-controlled Judiciary Committee and Senate.  And Democrats voted to confirm Alito (58-42) and Roberts (78-22)".

John Boehner: President Obama's Travel For Student Loan Bill Is 'Pathetic'

Do you guys realize that whoever is in the White House for the next 4 years is probably going to appoint 2 Supreme Court justices?

=================================

That has been the scare tactic used for the past 30 years, and the Supreme Court has moved farther and farther to the right despite electing Democratic presidents and senators.  Scalia and Thomas made it through a Democratically-controlled Judiciary Committee and Senate.  And Democrats voted to confirm Alito (58-42) and Roberts (78-22) - So much for the DLC's pro-Blue Dog argument.

The Supreme Court is lost already.

Obama's appointments are really nothing to defend.  Elena Kagan is the Goldman-Sacks seat, not to mention that she was the 5th vote in rolling back Miranda a few weeks ago.

And Sotomayor was with the Scalia-Thomas-Alito faction that boycotted the SOTU - Sotomayor was in Guam, addressing a group of students and swearing in new members of the Guam Bar Association, a first for a US Supreme Court Justice (are you kidding, Sonia, missing the most public showing of US democracy and the 3 branches of government by leaving the US for a 5 day trip to Guam?).

We need more Earl Warrens.  What we don't need are politicians looking to avoid a fight, and want to work "in a bipartisan manner".  Republicans declared war on Democrats years and years ago, while Democrats keep trying to "make nice".  Democratic politicians have gotten fat and lazy, feathering their own nests while Republicans have made long inroads into furthering corporate interests.

Whether Democrats are inept or corrupt, the result is the same: They have failed to protect the interests of the 99%.  And all that they're putting out this campaign season are warmed-over Republican-like policies when drastic populist steps need to be taken.

Obama: Romney Can't Say 'Everything I've Said For The Last 6 Months, I Didn't Mean'

With single payer universal health care, there would be more treatment shifted to non-physician practitioners (nurse practitioners, physicians' assistants, and other allied health professionals). Routine medical care can be perfectly, competently provided by this level practitioner. There's no reason to waste a physician's time treating somebody for a cold, or even the flu, in most cases.

It's true that if universal health coverage were to become an official reality, we'd need to expand training programs for both MDs and non-MD providers to insure there were enough to go around, but in the long run it would mean cheaper and more effective service, along with job creation.  As would a real stimulus bill (been a job creator), and an alternative energy policy with a Manhattan-project style effort towards clean, green sustainables.

These are all good things, but Obama and Democrats have chosen the dark side.  The corporate side.

Obama: Romney Can't Say 'Everything I've Said For The Last 6 Months, I Didn't Mean'

Legalizing marijuana is not my #1 concern at this time.  Do you think Romney would deliver what you wish, more than Obama?

==================================

Legalizing marijuana isn't my #1 concern either, but all of these issues are interconnected with the top issue we are constantly being told by the media is the only concern of the electorate, and determinant of the outcome of the election (the economy).

FWIW, I don't partake, but others who do can't "get their weed", as you put it, without the risk of running afoul of the law and resulting in everything from incarceration to fines, all costly.  The cost to me as a citizen (diverted law enforcement from real crimes, violent and other, court resourses, prison costs) is huge.

Neither Obama nor Romney will deliver on any issue important to the 99%.  This is just one of many issues where Obama's hypocrisy and deceitfulness is apparent for all to see.

On the domestic front, the job creation possibilities were lost when the real reform proposed by single payer universal healthcare advocates was eliminated from even getting a seat at the table, and Obama chose to preserve an anachronistic, expensive and failed insurance industry and employer-provided system for medical care, which is government-sanctioned racketeering.

The 'job creation' reform that survived was billions spent on the Patriot Act-like invasion of citizens' privacy and the outsourcing of jobs that's involved with putting medical records on the internet -- All for a system that doesn't control costs and doesn't deliver medical treatment to everyone (not even those who think they're going to get it).

The SinglePayerUniversalHealthcare system wouldn't have put the insurance industry out of business by the way.  It would've been a two-tiered system: Basic coverage for everyone and boutique coverage for those willing to pay for it. So nobody had to worry about poor Big Insurance and Pharma -- There would have been work for all. Big Insurance and Pharma would just had to have made smarter gambles, with no taxpayer bailouts.

Obama: Romney Can't Say 'Everything I've Said For The Last 6 Months, I Didn't Mean'

He also said that some of those medical weed growers were selling weed to non-medical weed users

==========================

As are other schedule III drugs (sold illicitly, for non-medical use), but you don't see Obama making them schedule I.

Obama based his flip-flopping on his campaign pledge on a president's inability to "nullify congressional law".

The fact is that the law grants the executive branch the power to unilaterally change the legal status of particular drugs.  Obama has the legal power to change marijuana's classification from schedule I (which means it has no accepted medical use) to schedule III (which is what synthetic THC, the active psychotropic agent in marijuana, is in).
