Obama Gets Modest Lame-Duck Poll Bump

Friday, January 7, 2011

For example, not only did I never think that President Obama is a liberal or Progressive, but neither did I expect him to be the President for Progressives or liberals.  I expected him to be the President of all Americans - Democrats and Republicans - left, right and center - and that is exactly what he is trying to be.
=======================================================

Obama got into office by misleading Democratic voters. He ran to the left of Hillary Clinton.  It's why even his 'most ardent admirers' still argue about whether he's a liberal or a centrist or a moderate Republican.  He convinced centrists that he was a centrist.  He convinced liberals he was a liberal posing as a centrist.

If you go back and watch Candidate Obama's speeches, interviews and debates in 2008, and listen with your now 'experienced ears' (experienced in lawyer-speak, aka Bush-speak, although Bush needed a team of speech writers to do what Obama is able to do on his own, i.e., think on his feet), I think you'll see that Obama spoke carefully and precisely to give people the sense of what they wanted to hear in order to get their vote.

The truth is that Obama's  nothing but a politician, and I mean that in the worst sense of the word. In the 'used car salesman' sense.  It turns out that doing what's right for transnational corporations is what Obama is about, and trying to sell it as good for Americans is what he does afterwards. He's the epitome of the 1950s Republican, "What's good for GM is good for America."  He did a snow job on everybody.

As far as this line, "I expected him to be the President of all Americans", it's straight out of the Plouffe playbook of spin.

Teddy Roosevelt was a Republican and busted the trusts and conserved the land.

We're talking about good policy, DEMOCRATIC ideology.  Even Teddy Roosevelt knew when to work in the People's best interests, with Democratic legislating.  Obama is pure REPUBLICAN policy and legislation cloaked in Democratic buzzwords.  Obama's 'most ardent supporters' have a bad habit of defending legislation that they don't really understand or know anything about by saying "He's trying to be president to all of the people," as if he's splitting the baby down the middle, giving each side a little (no, that's not even what he's doing, and if you had any background, education or experience in government and public policy you would know that), but even that would be k!lling the baby.

We're talking about policies and legislation and a government that works for the People or works for the transnational Corporations.  Both parties do that, and tragically you don't seem to comprehend the difference.

The very definition of "entitlement" is that it's money they put in, hence, they're "entitled".

The fact of the matter is, those entitlement funds were stolen from the American people to pay for wars and off-budget extras.

The idea that nobody is talking about paying the People back is the scandal of all time.

Why what Obama is doing, i.e. asking CEOs to do the "right thing" is such BS (and why Obama know it, and why I say he's taking the American people for fo0ls):

Corporations have a fiduciary obligation to maximize profits for shareholders and can be sued for not doing so.

Until and unless the laws change, NOTHING is going to motivate corporations to create jobs if corporations can make more money outsourcing them to other countries or eliminating jobs altogether.

The "Kennedy Tax Cuts" are the darlings of revisionist Republicans and pundits because they like to mislead people into thinking they were Republican-style Supply-Side/Trickle Down tax cuts that led to the economic expansion of the 1960s.

But they were not Supply-Side/Trickle Down tax cuts. They were Demand-Side tax cuts. The tax rate for the bottom bracket was cut by a greater percentage than the rate cut for the top bracket. That would be the antithesis of "Supply-Side" tax cuts.

By contrast, Reagan cut the top bracket by a much greater percentage than the bottom bracket and then, later, he raised the rate on the bottom bracket in order to make up for the dramatic shortfall in tax revenues due to his top marginal bracket rate cut. Those were Supply-Side tax cuts.

Although Kennedy did reduce the top marginal rate by to 71% from 91% and the lowest (non zero) rate from 20% to 14%, he didn't really reduce income taxes.

Because he also closed a lot of loopholes that allowed some taxpayers - mostly the very wealthy (the poor never get much use out of loopholes) the average effective tax rates on the very wealthy actually increased.

Kennedy's "cut" made the income tax more progressive - which means those at the bottom of the income totem pole got a greater benefit - precisely those most likely to spend their extra money in a way that stimulated the economy most efficiently. Kennedy's cut may look like supply side voodoo economics, but it was actually a classic Keynesian stimulus. Want proof?:  Most Republicans voted against it.

What Republicans are actually up to with that revisionist history is they're trying to suggest no Democratic president other than Kennedy EVER cut taxes. Hogwash. All presidents cut taxes somewhere at some time. All of them. And all of them raise taxes somewhere at some time.

In fact, the current and previous two Democratic presidents, Obama, Clinton and Carter, cut taxes deeper and more effectively for the purposes of economic expansion and for more Americans than all the phoney-baloney marginal tax cuts demogogued and enacted by all the Republican presidents who ever walked into the White House.

Kennedy's tax cuts were extremely effective because the rates when he entered office were so high. The lowest marginal income tax rate was 20%, the highest was 91%. These remain the highest rates of tax ever in American history with the exception of the last two years of World War II.

The '63 tax cuts had a strong stimulative effect. Bush's cuts, by contrast didn't, because they started from such a low base. The theory of diminishing returns applies, apparently.

Anyone who was an adult pre-Reagan will tell you that life & lifestyle in America for the average American (even the poor, but especially the middle class) was so much better than every year from 1980 to now.

Americans' lives and futures were improving each year post-WWII, and that's because of LIBERAL policies.  People were better educated and better informed, too.  The corporatization of US politics has been to dvmb-down the electorate and it's worked.

Michele Bachmann: We Need To 'Repeal President Obama In 2012' (VIDEO)

I think it's a mistake to dismiss her as a m0ron -- She's better educated and better functioning than most Americans.

I also think you should know that when they say that "Washington is Hollywood for ugly people", they're not talking about fame.  They're talking about acting.  She's playing to a particular audience and she does it well.

Michele Bachmann has done very well using the system to her own advantage.  Her own financial advantage.

What we're really dealing with is a very powerful and successful propaganda campaign aimed at Americans, not just by Bachmann and Republicans, but by Obama and Democrats, too.  Until you realize that Obama and the DLC-controlled Democrats are being served personally by having Bachmann and the Tea Party around (and don't do what's necessary to get rid of them once and for all time), we will always be at the mercy of the likes of the Tea Party and conservatives and a corporatocracy that funds them.

Exclusive: Daley Dismisses Report That He Forced Gibbs Out

This is what your link says:

Democratic insiders are taking the temperature of some top party donors about the possibility of naming White House press secretary Robert Gibbs as chairman of the Democratic National Committee heading into President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign in 2012, senior officials tell POLITICO.
Under the scenario being tested, Tim Kaine, the current DNC chairman and former governor of Virginia, would be named to a top administration post, perhaps in the Cabinet, the officials said.

Donors’ response has been positive, according to people who have been consulted.
Gibbs, one of the president’s closest confidants, already had been planning to leave the podium next year, perhaps to become a White House senior adviser.

This fits the story being reported here, that Gibbs wanted a senior advisory position but that didn't happen.  What's significant in today's story is that Gibbs isn't leaving for any position within the Democratic Party or the Obama administration (as reported in the Washington Examiner and Politico), but for parts unknown.

Gibbs is far from my favorite person (he's certainly no lefty, but then again neither is Daley), but it's hard to figure why this article aggravates you so.

Obama Gets Modest Lame-Duck Poll Bump

Is that how you decide to support Obama?  By what the rest of the crowd believes?

In fact, "a large majority" doesn't still support Obama.  Disapproval of the job he's doing outweighs approval for the job he's doing.  'Likability' isn't the same as job approval.  Bush was 'likable', remember?

By the way, if you think Obama's numbers are so great, if you believe that Democrats support what he's doing, the White House (nor the Democratic & Republican Parties) wouldn't spend so much on spin doctors.  They wouldn't need them -- All that the White House would have to do is tell the truth, present the legislation, and let Americans discuss it as to its merits.  That is the last thing that this or any modern, corporate White House wants to happen.

Americans are overworked, exhausted and poorly informed.  We are fed custom-tailored advertising campaigns by the best propagandists in the world, to tell us that legislation and policies that aren't in our best interests but in the interests of the greedy corporations areGRRRRRRREAT!

I don't know how old you are, but anyone who was an adult pre-Reagan will tell you that life & lifestyle in America for the average American (even the poor, but especially the middle class) was so much better than every year from 1980 to now.

You can thank Obama and the DLC/DCCC for Michele Bachmann's win over Democrat Tarryl Clark:

The DCCC isn't giving any substantive help to Democratic challengers against incumbent Republicans. Thanks to Debbie Wasserman Schultz's battle plan-- a craven and suicidal defensive crouch that sinks millions of dollars into indefensible worthless loser Blue Dogs like Bobby Bright-- at least a dozen viable progressives don't have the money they need to compete against corporately financed Republicans.

Obama needs Bachmann and the Tea Party to run against in 2012, and Corporations are only too thrilled to help because Obama's a Blue Dog himself ("Privately, Obama describes himself as a Blue Dog Democrat"), i.e., a Democrat-In-Name-Only.

Obama Gets Modest Lame-Duck Poll Bump

You're actually only reading the headlines.  If you read the entire articles (or better yet, read the actual polling date), Obama's not doing all that well.  The polls are more like push-polls, meant to influence people into having confidence in Obama's flagging popularity.

If you believe what you believe about the polls, you also have to accept that Bush was liked by the people, but it was his policies that weren't.  Obama, too, is likable.  What's not to like?  He's a perfectly amiable fellow; the only people he treats harshly, badly, dismissively, as children, are the Democratic Party's base.

You say those are tr0lls on the left.  I say they are responsible for clearing out 56% of the Blue Dogs (progressives/liberals only lost 3% of their members in the 2010 midterms).  We'll see then in 2012 if the base of the Democratic Party gets it together and puts real liberals up for election and into office in 2012 as Democrats or Independents and gets a viable Independent challenger running for the presidency.

Obama Gets Modest Lame-Duck Poll Bump

Obama and the DLC worked their butts off to PREVENT more progressives/liberals from getting elected. Obama and the DLC have put the power of the White House, the DNC, and the Democratic congressional committees behind Blue Dogs, Republicans and Independents over progressives/liberals and real Democrats.  Some, but not all, examples:

Blue Dog Blanche Lincoln over progressive Democrat Lt. Governor Bill Halter.

Republican-turned-Independent Arlen Specter over progressive Democrat Joe Sestak.

Republican-turned-Independent Lincoln Chaffee over Democrat Frank Caprio (which, in turn, is an effective endorsement of the Republican John Loughlin over Democrat David Cicilline for the congressional seat Democrat Patrick Kennedy is retiring from, and all of the other seats up for grab in Rhode Island).

Republican-turned-Independent Charlie Crist over liberal Democrat Kendrick Meek.

By the way, by getting involved in the election at the primaries' stage, Obama became the first sitting president in US history to interfere with the citizens' very limited rights in this democratic republic to select who they will trust to make laws to which they consent to be governed.

Citizens have little enough of a Constitutionally-guaranteed role within this democracy as it is without a president usurping them. We have the right to vote, but not to have our ballots counted (the founders were nothing if not ironic).  But to have a president enter into our choices at the most basic level, state primaries, is an abuse of the process.

All that you are is a "Polly" spewing DLC talking points; you obviously haven't a clue about the policies and legislation that Obama is pushing through into law.  Obama throws Democratic constituents and those that the Democratic Party is known to champion (the poor, middle classes, the elderly, students, the unemployed, families, the disenfranchised) under the bus.

Every single item in the 'tax cuts for the rich'-deal that Obama claimed was a win for Democrats is actually all Republican initiated?

Obama's S. Korean Trade deal is NAFTA-revisited; more Americans' jobs will be outsourced overseas.

"Privately, Obama describes himself as a Blue Dog Democrat"

Blue Dog = Republican

Whether it's taking single payer universal health care, a public option, investigations and prosecutions of Bush-Cheney, etc., off the table, or continuing the Bush-Cheney policies and going Bush-Cheney one better (by asserting that presidents have the right to k!ll American citizens with no due process, no oversight, and 'preventive detention', the right to imprison anyone indefinitely because he thinks they might commit a crime), or using Joe Lieberman to hide behind, to duck out on his campaign pledge of transparency, and gut the FOIA, no real Democrat, no real American, could continue to support Obama or any politicians purporting to be Democrats, or any American politican doing this.
