Lisa Murkowski Write-In Bid Decision: Alaska Senator Announces Run [UPDATE]
Saturday, September 18, 2010
This is no different than when Joe Lieberman ran as an Independent in 2006. Democratic Senators and the Democratic machine publicly supported Lieberman while working behind-the-scenes to help him raise money to beat out the Democratic candidate, Ned Lamont, and Republican Alan Schlesinger.
If Murkowski wins, she'll caucus with Republicans just as Lieberman is caucusing with Democrats*.
[*For all his treachery before 2006, Lieberman was rewarded with retaining seniority within the Democratic caucus, getting committee and sub-committee chairmanships, etc., and retaining it all after the 2008 election after endorsing and campaigning for John McCain!]
Bush and Cheney did what they did through exploiting loopholes in the Constitution. The very few (but powerful) tools and mechanisms that exist to keep one branch of government from exploiting those loopholes weren't used to keep the executive branch in balance with the other two.
This is what happens when that happens. This is what happens when government officials aren't held to account; the problem invades all branches and grows and gets worse. "If the executive branch can do it and get away with it, why can't the legislative branch (or political parties, or candidates in those parties, or candidates period) do it?"
Our government is irretrievably broken, throughout all branches. And broken limbs go untreated, at best they heal twisted. At worst, sepsis sets in.
