I think it sells because it's all that's offered.  Like fast food, it's cheap and convenient.  If there were more appealing alternatives, people would choose the quality program over the schlock.  

That's the theory behind premium channels, and it works.  The real issue to me is how having to pay for quality programming has a broader effect on our culture that is eroding the overall quality of our lives and the continuing of human civilization on the planet.
