Wal-Mart closes seafood counters in some Fla. stores, but continues fresh seafood sales

JULY 29TH, 2010

DESTIN — A Wal-Mart spokesman said Thursday that the discount giant is closing fresh seafood counters at some but not all of its Florida superstores but that it continues to sell seafood at all of its stores.

"We remain committed to Florida seafood distribution," said Daniel Morales, media director for Wal-Mart South based in Houston, Texas.

The decision to close seafood counters in some stores was based on consumer demand in individual stores and is part of a process Wal-Mart conducts with all products in determining the best use of space, Morales said.

Even in the stores where the counters were closed, fresh seafood continues to be stocked in other storage areas such as refrigerators or freezers.

He said the closures had nothing to do with the BP oil spill.

"This goes way before the oil spill," Morales said.”
