To begin with, that's not Obama's job.
Just like during the healthcare debate when Obama eliminated single payer before negotiations even began (also not his job, as he himself rightly noted), the Progressive Caucus has a plan for dealing with the deficit. All that is on the table now is the Republicans' plan. That's the boilerplate for this deal.
The Progressive Caucus's positions are overwhelmingly mainstream America's. Americans do not want Social Security and Medicare on the table in these talks, and want an end to the Bush now Obama tax cuts.
