Your insight is not unique, and has merit, however I think it is worth noting that it is proportionately more representative of reality as you move up through the echelon of government, i.e., local government is far more independent of this phenomenon than the federal govt.

To a certain extent, I agree with you. Independent local government is all fine and good, but federal trumps state/local, and it's no accident that most local governments are as pro-business/anti-populist as it gets because the people who are on local governing bodies o it to increase their businesses.
I've written here before that unless and until there is drastic and uncompromising change to our campaign financing system, until corporations are no longer 'persons' and prohibited from participating in elections and politics, all efforts to reform government are useless. But neither party is interested in doing that because it would mean they'd lose their hold on money and power (and look at the fortunes of politicians once they leave office -- Obama's going to make BillClinton look like a piker in the 'after-office' money grab; enough to keep Michelle in diamonds and pearls that she told him to keep sending her way on the OprahShow last year). So where does that leave us?
