So your (and Obama's) solution was to pass Republican legislation. It would be like victims of genocide, such as those during WWII, not only voluntarily boarding trains to concentration camps, but driving them, then entering gas showers and dropping the gas pellets on themselves.
ACA is a lousy bill that continues the problem that Obama and Democrats were put into power to end. ACA actually makes the problem worse. It institutionalizes, for all time, the insurance industry as the gatekeeper to people's being able to get medical treatment with no cost controls. It funnels even more money away from medical treatment and into the hands BigInsurance, PhRma, Hospitals, etc., making it even harder for the People to fight politically against healthcare corporate interests each succeeding election cycle.
Whatever FDL was or wasn't willing to do isn't of any interest or concern to me. It's not a matter of "righteousness" over "not selling out"; it's a matter of getting what the People wanted.
This was the fight that Obama and Democrats were put into power to have. They were tasked to get affordable, quality medical treatment for everyone and they pledged to do it. It couldn't have come at a more opportune time -- The economic meltdown and the massive number of jobs lost in America. It was an opportunity for Obama and Democrats to turn the conservatives' privatization and deregulation tide of the last three decades. A perfect storm had aligned, with our need for alternative clean and sustainable energy, affordable quality medical care for all, education and job training and the creation of millions of new jobs in the US. It was an opportunity for Obama to combine it all into a New New Deal project, which could have solved all of the problems left to him by BushCheney and usher us into the 21st century as a competitive force to be reckoned with in a world economy.
Instead, Obama and Democrats did a masterful job of preserving the failed system, setting it in concrete actually, convincing the victims that it's really a good thing (and hoping that by the time the People realize that it's not a good thing, Obama and the Democrats who made it happen will have long since retired their offices).
FWIW, I would have loved to see Tom Harkin and Jay Rockefeller not vote for it in reconciliation (meaning they never wouldn't have voted for it). But let's for argument's sake say they wouldn't have voted for it. Then you know who and where your problem is, and who you need to target and replace. The fact is that Obama and the DNC never pressured any recalcitrant Democrats, except to get those working to get a public option to back down. On them, Obama used brass knuckles. That, and the corporate-friendly legislation itself, should tell you what a fraud Obama is as a 'Democrat'.
