The only reason Jimmy Carter lost was due to a bad economy he inherited and that was gamed to result to result in what we have become today by the Saudis and special players in US politics, namely conservatives (Reagan, James Baker, and company):

Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Casey and their gang should have faced trial and prison for treason, just as Joanne Herring should have (Charlie Wilson's War). But Bill Clinton, DLC co-founder, made sure that wasn't going to happen.
In a democracy, private citizens do not get to use the government and its resources, particularly its military, for their own personal gain and purposes.
