Corporations Won't Self-Regulate
Wednesday, June 9, 2010
What happened here wasn't the result of deregulation (although I agree that we must reregulate industries across the board); this was the failure of government oversight.
There's no way to safely drill for oil offshore; it's d@mned near impossible on land.
What we're seeing is a failure of leadership by our government to respond with ACTION (put BP into temporary receivership, mobilize a work force to lay & properly maintain boom, prevent oil from getting to barrier islands & coastlines, get tankers & skimmers from all corners to siphon up the oil, etc.). http://www
Obama's waiting until the fall (or even later) for BP's solution (a relief well that may not actually repair what may be a blown casing beneath the rock formation) is a luxury we can ill afford.
Obama has the power & the ability to transform not only the region, but the woes of the entire country, by seizing this moment & delivering what he campaigned on: A new economy based on GREEN SUSTAINABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT.
Obama's let every opportunity to undo the damage that BushCheney & Republicans have done, everything from breaking up the banks & Wall St. to real job stimulus, go by the wayside.
Democratic politicians dream of moments like those we've experienced these past 18 months, to effect real change, to connect themselves to the People through their inner FDRs, but all that Obama's doing is channeling HerbertHoover.
