Brokaw is a privileged insider, not willing to hold power to account. Like David Gregory who pals around with Karl Rove, and Ted Koppel who pals around with Henry Kissinger, to make it in Washington journalism, Brokaw, too, has blurred the lines, ethical lines, about which side he wants to be on.

On just about every front, from feckless financial regulations that wouldn't have prevented (won't prevent another) economic meltdown and healthcare reform that does NOT provide what he and Democrats were put into office to attain (affordable, quality medical treatment for everyone) to foreign policy and wars, Obama has continued Bush-Cheney-Republican policies.
Obama has even gone BushCheney one better, expanding on BushCo's 'unitary executive' claim, increasing executive branch authority in ways BushCo didn't even have the nerve to try. Whether it's the gutting of FOIA or his latest which has gotten no coverage in the media (Miranda is another recent Obama victim), Obama's 'Katrina' (not getting MMS to regulate the oil industry before BP, et al., destroyed the Gulf Of Mexico and created a Extinction Level Event, etc.), continuing Bush's tax cuts for the rich, expanding the wars into Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Libya, etc., new NAFTAs (S. Korea, CAFTA), it's hard to imagine a third BushCheney term being any worse.
What you call "pragmatism" is actually lying. From his bully pulpit, a president has the ability and responsibility to teach and lead, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. For someone who has advertised himself as a Constitutional scholar, Obama has demonstrated in his first term that his interpretation of the Constitution is a conservatives' one, despite what the rank-and-file dittoheads believe. As the only thing we have to go on as a predictor of future behavior is past behavior, there is no reason to believe Obama supports, or ever will, gays marrying.

Did you feel that way when Obama, after securing liberals' votes during the primaries of 2008 with his position against a proposed FISA bill granting retroactive immunity, flip-flopped and voted for it?
How about when CandidateObama vowed to crackdown on oil speculation, only to flip-flop in the days immediately after being elected?
Democratic voters have mistakenly believed that Obama and Democrats were for strong regulations on banks, WallStreet, investigations, prosecutions, restitution of what has been robbed from the middle class and poor for the past 30+ years, environmental clean-up, clean, sustainable renewable energy (and that isn't nuclear), putting an end to the wars and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, affordable, quality universal healthcare (which Obama's healthcare legislation is not), and more.
The DLC-controlled DemocraticParty gives lip service to these and all populist issues, because like the RepublicanParty, the DLC works for the benefit of transnational corporations. Each party uses high-priced public relations firms, with spinmeisters crafting sophisticated propaganda campaigns to con voters into believing what isn't true. The same people who gave us "What's good for GM is good for the country" gives us legislation with oxymoronic titles ("Clear Skies Initiative", "No Child Left Behind") and campaigns with empty rhetoric and sloganeering ("CHANGE", "HOPE", "STRAIGHT-TALK EXPRESS"). All calculated to convince the left and the right within each party that their party's candidate shares their positions.
Obama's a politician, and I mean that in the worst sense of the word. He got into office by misleading Democratic voters. He ran to the left of HillaryClinton. He convinced centrists that he was a centrist. He convinced liberals he was a liberal posing as a centrist.
But first and foremost, Obama is a lawyer, and I mean that in the worst sense of the word, in the snake-oil or used car salesman sense of the word. In the sense of choosing his words very carefully (lawyer-speak), giving people the sense of what they wanted to hear to get their support.

These are basic rights conferred in the Constitution to everyone, and not a matter that can be voted on, for a majority to deny a minority.

Japanese Ambassador Murata is joining in the growing chorus which include US Senators who are warning the he problem at Fukushima nuclear reactor 4 is the single greatest short-term threat to humanity andhas the potential to destroy our world and civilization as we know it.
The Ambassador puts it very bluntly saying the warnings about reactor 4′s threat to end human civilization are no exaggeration.
He is joining forces with human rights groups from around the globe in calling for the UN to step in and end the crisis in Fukushima that TEPCO is planning on taking decades to resolve after repeated warnings that even a minor earthquake could cause the spend fuel pool to collapse which would result in a radiation release so massive it could end life on earth.

April 17, 2012: Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon), appeared on MSNBC’s The Daily Rundown to discuss a recent onsite tour of what remains of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear facilities decimated by last year’s earthquake and subsequent tsunami.
Wyden, a senior member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, sent a letter to Japanese Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki looking for ways to advance and support clean-up and recovery efforts. Wyden’s principal concern is the relocation of spent fuel rods currently being stored in unsound structures immediately adjacent to the ocean. He strongly urged the Ambassador to accept international help to prevent dangerous nuclear material from being released into the environment.
